What you get

What’s included in mobile app development

  • App design

Screens and flows designed for iOS and Android conventions.

  • Cross-platform build

One React Native codebase for both platforms, with native modules where needed.

  • Backend & APIs

Accounts, data, notifications and admin tools behind the app.

  • Push notifications

Timely, targeted notifications that bring people back.

  • Payments & subscriptions

In-app purchases and subscriptions on both stores.

  • Store launch

App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.

Tools we use: React Native, Expo, Swift, Kotlin, Firebase, Node.js.

Choosing

Should you build a cross-platform or native app?

For an app built around accounts, forms, bookings, payments or content, a cross-platform build is a practical place to start. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android and adding native modules where a feature needs them. It renders each platform’s own interface components, and some logic can also be shared with a React web app.

Native development fits a different brief. An app built around deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work may need Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. That gives you the platform-specific approach those features call for, with separate codebases to build and maintain.

A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool. It skips store review, although it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. Decide how people will find and use the tool before choosing that route.

Local

What Tasmania’s businesses need from an app

Tasmania’s agriculture and tourism activity includes shops and restaurants serving customers who return. An app for those businesses could make reordering straightforward, keep loyalty details accessible and let customers use saved payment details. Checkout needs to be quick, and notifications need to arrive at a useful point in the customer’s visit or order.

Healthcare and education are also part of Tasmania’s economy. A clinic with appointments needs booking, reminders, payments and a staff view of the day’s schedule. An education organisation with a frequently used web platform may need an app that uses the same accounts and data, so people do not have to maintain separate records.

Rules

What an app project in Australia needs to handle

Health service providers are among the small businesses covered by Australia’s Privacy Act regardless of turnover. For an app collecting personal information, we set up links to a privacy policy inside the app and in its store listing; the policy needs to match the information the app actually collects.

Australian guidance recommends WCAG 2.2 Level AA as a minimum for equal access to digital goods and services. We set up the app’s screen designs and flows with that target in mind, so accessibility is considered in the design work.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India time is 4h30m behind Hobart, changing to 5h30m during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the tasks people need to complete and the systems the app needs to work with.

  2. 02

    Design

We design screens for iOS and Android and refine them with your feedback before writing code. You can review the flows and raise changes while they are still designs.

  3. 03

    Test

You receive builds on your own phone through TestFlight on iPhone or a Google Play testing track. Use the app for its main tasks and share what needs attention.

  4. 04

    Submit

We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain the accounts used for the release.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring the details that help us agree what the first release needs to do.

  • List the tasks users must complete, in the order they will do them.
  • Note the website, booking system, CRM or payment provider involved, whether each has an API and who holds admin access.
  • Check the closed-test requirements if you plan to use a new personal Google Play developer account.
  • For an app with login, prepare for a working demo account and live backend at submission.
  • Decide who in your business will hold the developer accounts, signing access and code repository.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline of app development

The work behind each screen is as relevant to scope as the screen itself.

  • Backend and admin tools

Accounts, stored data and staff controls need work alongside the app on the phone.

  • Offline use

Showing the last loaded data is less work than accepting edits offline and resolving conflicts when they sync.

  • Live features

Tracking and chat need persistent connections and more backend work than data loaded on request.

  • Screen variations

Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • Existing systems

A documented backend API reduces the work needed to build the app and its supporting tools.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with app development

  • Wrapping a website in an app shell

Give people useful app features. A repackaged site risks rejection during Apple’s review.

  • Asking for notifications immediately

Make the benefit clear first, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user allows them.

  • Adding an analytics or advertising SDK without revisiting privacy answers: Update Google Play’s Data safety form to cover data collected by third-party SDKs.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Tasmania

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price. The main drivers include the different user roles and permissions, plus integrations such as payment gateways, booking systems or hardware. Each integration needs setup, testing and failure handling. Once we agree the scope, ask us for a free quote.

How do I choose an app development company?

Choose a team whose working process gives you direct access to the people making the product. We handle design, development and launch with the same team, and you speak directly to the people designing and building your app. Ask how feedback reaches them before you agree the work.

Can the app take payments and subscriptions?

Yes. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. Apple requires in-app purchase for digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app; physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment method, such as a card gateway.

Can the app share accounts with my website?

Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, keeping accounts and data in one place. That gives your staff an administrative view alongside the customer-facing products, while the app and website use the same underlying service.

Will I own the app after it is built?

Yes. You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep a record of where those assets are held and who in your business has access, so you can continue to manage the product and its content after launch.

What support will the app need after launch?

Plan for maintenance releases and check how people use the app. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Track returning users, drop-off in the main task and the crash-free rate to see where a release needs attention.
