Choosing
Which platform should you choose?
Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. You can add features through apps, though those apps can bring recurring subscriptions. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan, so check your checkout requirements before choosing it.
WooCommerce is a fit if your business already uses WordPress, has a lot of content, or wants control over code, data and hosting. That control comes with work: someone needs to manage hosting, security, updates and plugin compatibility. A custom or headless storefront, such as Next.js with a commerce back end, suits unusual catalogues, product configurators and content-led brands. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer.
We recommend a platform after learning about your products and operations. That gives us a practical basis for weighing up how your team will run the store and how much flexibility it needs.
Local
What Tasmania’s businesses need from an online store
Tourism is part of Tasmania’s economy. If you run a tourism business selling products through social media or messages, a catalogue with online payment and order tracking gives customers a way to order without your team handling each purchase in chat.
Agricultural exporters selling to trade customers may need customer-specific prices, minimum quantities and quote requests. Shipping rules also need attention: we can configure delivery zones and rates, and restrict products that cannot be sent to certain areas.
Forestry is an established industry in Tasmania. If you sell related products through a physical shop as well as online, stock synchronisation with your till and a click-and-collect option give your team a clearer way to manage both channels.
Rules
What your Australian store needs to handle
Australian GST is 10% on most goods and services. We configure the applicable tax settings alongside payment and shipping settings, so the checkout reflects how your products are sold.
Your returns and refund pages must not claim to override Australian consumer guarantees. We set up policy pages with that requirement in mind. For commercial email or text messages, we also set up permission capture and an unsubscribe route so customers can leave your marketing list.
How it runs
How an e-commerce project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 4h30m behind Hobart, or 5h30m behind during daylight saving. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that time difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your products and operations before recommending Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom build. You tell us how your team sells and manages orders.
- 02
Design
We design product, collection and checkout pages for desktop and mobile. You review the screens and give feedback before coding starts.
- 03
Import
We put in a small product sample first. You check titles, variants, prices and images before the full catalogue goes in.
- 04
Test
You place orders across payment, shipping, discount and tax cases, then check stock, emails and the order records in the admin.
- 05
Launch and care
We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, then provide ongoing support.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather these materials so we can understand the store and its day-to-day requirements.
- A product spreadsheet with names, prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
- Original product photos with consistent backgrounds and an image for each colour variant.
- Plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies.
- Business registration, bank details and identity documents for a payment account in your business’s name. Apply early; the provider decides on approval.
- Logins for your domain, current site, email, analytics and Google accounts, held in your business’s name.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The work changes with the condition of your data, the design and the systems your store needs to connect.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet is quicker to import than information spread across an old store, supplier PDFs and photo threads.
Design
Adapting a theme takes less work than creating a custom design around unusual products or a distinct brand.
Integrations
An order export to accounting is smaller work than syncing stock and prices with an ERP or several marketplaces.
Migration
Moving customers, order history, reviews and redirects adds scope beyond products. Existing customers will usually need a password reset email.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid
Losing old URLs
Map each old product and category URL to its closest new page and set up permanent 301 redirects, including for dropped products.
Adding an app for every feature
Review what each app or plugin does and remove unused ones. Extra scripts, conflicts and recurring fees add up.
Sending unauthenticated order emails
Set up SPF or DKIM on your sending domain to help keep messages out of spam.
Overloading product pages
Compress images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where needed.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Tasmania
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does an e-commerce website cost to develop?
There is no fixed price. Custom checkout features, customer-specific pricing and extra markets with their own currency, language and tax setup all change the scope. A delivery date picker or wholesale price tier, for example, needs its own rules. Ask us for a quote once we have agreed what your store needs.
Should I sell through a marketplace or my own store?
You can use both. A marketplace brings ready traffic but sets its own rules and keeps the customer relationship. Your own store keeps customer data and margin, while leaving you responsible for attracting visitors. If you sell through both, stock synchronisation helps keep availability consistent.
What is included in an online store build?
A store build covers the catalogue, cart and checkout, payment and shipping settings, tax rules, order emails, customer accounts, policy pages and the admin your team uses. Payment testing should cover paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders, with checks on the order record, stock and customer email.
Can you move my existing store?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Before customers use the new store, place a real low-value order using the live payment settings and refund it. That checks details such as currency settings, payment notifications and order emails.
Who owns the store after it is built?
You own your domain, content and code. That leaves you free to work with another team on the store instead of being locked to its original builders. Keep those assets under your control so a future developer can work with what you already own.
What should we look after once the store is live?
Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need. Track conversion, checkout drop-off and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration to see where to investigate.
