What you get

What’s included in mobile app development

  • App design

Screens and flows designed for iOS and Android conventions.

  • Cross-platform build

One React Native codebase for both platforms, with native modules where needed.

  • Backend & APIs

Accounts, data, notifications and admin tools behind the app.

  • Push notifications

Timely, targeted notifications that bring people back.

  • Payments & subscriptions

In-app purchases and subscriptions on both stores.

  • Store launch

App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.

Tools we use: React Native, Expo, Swift, Kotlin, Firebase, Node.js.

Choosing

Should you build a cross-platform app or go native?

A cross-platform app is a practical starting point for accounts, forms, lists, maps, bookings, payments and content. React Native shares most of the code across iOS and Android, so there is less platform-specific code to maintain. We usually choose it for this kind of work, and go native when an app needs deep device features.

React Native renders each platform’s own interface components. It uses JavaScript or TypeScript, which lets web developers contribute and gives you the option to share some logic with a React web app. A native build in Swift and Kotlin gives you a better fit for heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch, but leaves you with separate codebases to build and maintain.

A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool. It skips store review, but needs packaging to appear in the app stores; on iPhone, it can request notification permission only after someone adds it to the Home Screen.

Local

What organisations in Australian Capital Territory need from an app

The ACT has headquarters for professional associations and not-for-profits. If your organisation already has a web platform that members use frequently, an app can reuse their existing accounts, data and backend instead of asking them to start again.

Universities with campuses in the ACT may have teams carrying out inspections or other field work. For that kind of task, the useful app features are forms, photos, signatures and job locations that sync back to the office when signal returns.

The ACT also has museums and galleries. If your organisation needs staff to update app content, include an admin panel alongside the phone app and backend, so staff can make those changes without calling a developer.

Rules

What an app project in Australia has to handle

Australian guidance recommends WCAG 2.2 Level AA as a minimum for equal access to digital goods and services. We design your iOS and Android screens and flows against that target, so accessibility is part of the screen work from the outset.

Some small businesses, including those providing health services, are covered by the Privacy Act regardless of turnover. Apple also requires every app to link to a privacy policy in its listing and inside the app. We set up the in-app link; your policy needs to match the information the app collects.

How it runs

How a mobile app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 4h30m behind Canberra, or 5h30m during daylight saving. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the main task you want people to complete in the app.

  2. 02

    Design

Put the clickable prototype in front of customers or staff and bring their feedback to us. A screen is less costly to change before it is built.

  3. 03

    Test

We send builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Use them for real tasks and tell us where the flow is awkward.

  4. 04

    Prepare submission

If the app has a login, have a working demo account and live backend ready. Leave room in the launch plan for fixes and resubmission.

  5. 05

    Launch

We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain control of the accounts used to publish the app.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring a short description of the work and gather the following details.

  • List what users must do in the first release, in the order they will do it.
  • Start registering Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
  • Check your Google Play account typenew personal accounts need a closed test before production release.
  • Decide which screens and drop-off points you want analytics to show, and include crash reporting in the first release.
  • List any analytics or advertising SDKs planned for the app so their data collection is covered in Google Play’s Data safety answers.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline of an app

The work grows with the screens, systems and behaviours the app needs to support.

  • Existing backend

A documented API reduces the work; a new backend and admin panel require their own build.

  • Integrations

Payments, maps, booking systems or hardware each need setup, testing and failure handling.

  • Interface

Custom animation, additional languages or tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • Live features

Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work.

  • Offline editing

Saving new or edited records without signal needs later syncing and conflict handling; showing previously loaded data is a smaller task.

  • User content

Apps with user-generated content need filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details for Apple’s requirements.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with mobile app development

  • Wrapping a website in an app shell

Give people useful app functionality beyond the existing site. Apple’s guidelines call for more than a repackaged website, so a wrapper risks rejection.

  • Asking for notification permission immediately

Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user allows them.

  • Leaving publishing access with an agency

Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name, so moving the app later is less difficult.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Australian Capital Territory

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to have an app developed?

There is no fixed price. The main drivers include your platform approach, the backend work and the notification rules you need. A shared React Native codebase suits many apps, while deep device features may call for native work. We can also build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools.

Which company should I choose for app development?

Choose a company that can explain its proposed build and the features it will deliver. Ask how it would use a shared React Native codebase, where native modules would be needed, and how it would handle in-app purchases or subscriptions. Those details give you a useful basis for comparing proposals.

What is included beyond the app screens?

We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, keeping customer accounts and data in one place. We also set up push notifications. These can be targeted to the people you want to reach at the time you want to contact them.

Who owns the app and publishing accounts?

You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. Ask for access to the accounts and project materials as the work progresses, so your business retains control after release.

What support does an app need after launch?

Plan regular maintenance releases. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, and outdated apps can become unavailable to new users on newer devices. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out over the air; native code changes and new permissions still need a store release.

How do payments work inside an app?

The checkout depends on what you sell. Google Play requires its billing system for digital goods and subscriptions sold in the app, but says it must not be used for physical goods or services such as groceries, transport or event tickets. Some regions allow alternative billing, so identify your purchase types when planning checkout.
