Choosing
Should you choose cross-platform, native or a web app?
React Native suits most apps. It uses JavaScript or TypeScript and renders each platform’s own interface components, while sharing a codebase across iOS and Android. If you have a React website, some logic can be shared with it. That gives a web development team a useful route into the app code too.
Native development fits an app that depends on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch. The trade-off is separate codebases to build and maintain. Flutter is another cross-platform option: its Dart code draws its own interface, which suits a highly customised design, provided your team is ready to work in Dart.
A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool. It skips store review, although it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to their Home Screen. We start by learning what you need the product to do and agree the scope with you.
Local
What Northern Territory businesses need from an app
Mining and petroleum are substantial parts of the Territory’s economy. For a business managing maintenance or inspection work, an app can give field staff forms, photos, signatures and a location for each job. Staff need to capture those details offline and sync them to the office when signal returns. That workflow gives your office a way to receive job information without making connectivity a condition of completing the visit.
Tourism is a significant industry in regional areas of the Northern Territory. A tourism operator taking appointments needs a booking flow customers can use, reminders, payment and a staff view of the day’s schedule. The staff view deserves attention alongside the customer screens: your team needs to see what has been booked as part of the working day.
Rules
What an app project in Australia has to handle
Accessible screens need planning during design. Australian guidance recommends at least WCAG 2.2 Level AA for digital goods and services, so we set up the design work to check screens and controls against that level. Agreeing the target early gives accessibility a place in screen decisions instead of leaving it until submission.
If your app takes card payments, checkout settings need to reflect the removal of surcharging on debit, prepaid and credit card payments on the eftpos, Mastercard and Visa networks. We set up the checkout without those card surcharges.
How it runs
How a mobile app development project runs with us
We work remotely from India, using video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 4h behind Darwin. The shared board gives us a place to keep feedback and project decisions moving across that difference.
- 01
Discover
Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We agree the scope together before moving into design.
- 02
Design
We prepare screen designs for your feedback before code is written. Use this stage to check that the flow reflects how your customers and staff work.
- 03
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback helps you change a screen before it has been built.
- 04
Test
We send builds to your phone through TestFlight or the Google Play testing tracks. Try the main tasks in use and send us your feedback.
- 05
Launch
We handle the App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release. Review the listing content with us so it describes what your app actually offers.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
A few practical details will help us discuss the scope.
- List what users must do in the first release, in the order they will do it.
- Start registering your Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
- List the website, booking, CRM or payment systems the app must use, their APIs and who holds admin access.
- Prepare a privacy policy that matches the data the app collects; Apple requires a link in the listing and app.
- If the app has a login, plan a working demo account and live backend for Apple’s submission review.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of app development
The work grows with the flows and systems the app has to support.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.
Integrations
A payment gateway, booking system or scanner adds setup, testing and failure handling.
Live features
Tracking and chat need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Screen variations
Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across the app.
Existing systems
A backend with a documented API reduces the work compared with building a backend and admin panel from scratch.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with mobile app development
Wrapping a website in an app shell
Plan functions that give people a reason to install the app; Apple expects more than a repackaged site.
Forcing sign-up too early
Let people use the app without logging in when it has no significant account-based features.
Leaving access with an agency
Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name so you can move the app later.
Adding tracking without updating privacy answers
Include data collected by third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in Google Play’s Data safety form.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Northern Territory
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The scope of the backend and admin panel is a major driver, as is the level of offline work: showing previously loaded data takes less work than creating and editing records offline with conflict handling. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
How should I choose an app developer?
Ask how the developer will support your main user task and measure what happens after release. Discuss retention, where people drop out and the crash-free rate. If you already have a website, ask how the app, website and admin tools will share accounts and data through a backend.
What is included in the app build?
We build a React Native codebase for both platforms and add native modules where needed. For push notifications, the work includes a sending service, rules for who receives each message and when, and settings inside the app so people can switch off notification categories they do not want.
Will I own the app and its accounts?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. We handle store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. Keeping those accounts under your control gives your business a direct role in the app’s store presence as well as ownership of the code.
What support is available after launch?
We provide ongoing support for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can be delivered over the air with tools such as Expo EAS Update. Changes to native code, new permissions and Expo SDK upgrades still need a store release.
How do payments and subscriptions work in an app?
We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. Digital content, features and subscriptions used inside the app generally use the stores’ billing systems. Physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment method, such as a card gateway; Google Play billing must not be used for them.
