Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform, native or web app?
We usually build with React Native. It uses one codebase for iOS and Android while rendering each platform’s own interface components. That gives you shared application logic and room to add native modules where a feature needs them. If you already have a React website, some logic can also be shared with it.
A native build suits an app that relies on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch. The trade-off is maintaining separate iPhone and Android codebases. That affects the work involved when you change a feature or support a new platform release.
A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool. It skips store review, though it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can only ask to send notifications after someone adds it to their Home Screen. Start with the tasks people need to do and where they need to find the app.
Local
What Virginia organisations need from an app
Northern Virginia’s technology companies and federal agencies shape the local economy. For a technology company whose customers already use a web platform, an app becomes useful when people return frequently and need the same account and data on their phones. We can build a shared backend for the app, website and admin tools, so those services draw on the same information.
Virginia’s government, military, farming and high-tech sectors also support people who use appointment services. A clinic, salon or gym serving them needs a clear booking flow, reminders and payments, as well as a staff view of the day’s schedule. Those tasks give the screen design a practical starting point.
Rules
What a US mobile app project has to handle
For a state or local government app, the US accessibility rule requires mobile apps to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. That changes what needs to be included in the screen design and review. We set up the app screens around the applicable accessibility requirements, alongside the iOS and Android conventions, so the standard is part of the work from the outset. Your team can review the screens and identify the public services and tasks they need to cover.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time; the shared board gives both teams a place to keep decisions and feedback visible across that difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the main tasks your users need to complete.
- 02
Design
We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. Review the flows as well as the individual screens.
- 03
Build and test
We develop the agreed product and test it on real devices and browsers. Your feedback helps us refine the work.
- 04
Measure
We include analytics and crash reporting in the first release. These show screen use, drop-off and devices affected by crashes.
- 05
Submit
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
List the systems the app needs to work with, including your website, CRM, booking software or payment provider, and note which have an API and who holds admin access.
- Developer accountsRegister Apple and Google accounts in the company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
- Google Play testingA new personal developer account needs a closed test before production release.
- Privacy policyPrepare a policy matching the data the app collects, for the listing and the app itself.
- iPhone account deletionIf users can create accounts, plan an in-app way to start deleting them.
- Android account deletionPlan an in-app deletion path and a web link for deletion requests.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time of app development
The work grows with the services, connections and controls your app needs.
Existing backend
A documented API reduces backend work; a new backend and admin panel can be a substantial part of the project.
Integrations
A payment gateway, CRM, booking system or scanner adds setup, testing and failure handling.
Live features
Chat and live tracking need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
User-generated content
Filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details add moderation work to the build.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid
Wrapping a website
Give people useful app functionality; a site inside an app shell risks store rejection.
Requiring sign-up too early
Let people use the app without logging in when it has no significant account-based features.
Losing control of access
Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name.
Adding tracking without updating disclosures
Include data collected by third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in Google Play’s Data safety form.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Virginia
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The number of user roles changes the screens and permissions needed, while offline editing and later syncing add work to handle conflicts. Agree the scope with us so we can prepare a quote based on the flows and offline behaviour your app needs.
How should I choose an app development company?
Choose a company that lets you review the product on your own phone during development. We share test builds through TestFlight on iPhone and Google Play’s internal or closed testing tracks on Android, so your feedback comes from real use. Ask who will handle the store listing and submission too.
What does app development include?
It includes the services behind the screens as well as the interface. We build accounts, data services, notifications and admin tools. For push notifications, we set up a sending service, rules for who receives each message and when, and in-app settings for switching off unwanted categories.
Who owns the app code?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. That gives your business control of those assets after the build. Keep a record of where the code and content are held and who in your organisation has access to them.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support covers bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out over the air; native code changes and new permissions still need a store release. Review retention and crash-free rate to see how people use each release.
How do payments and subscriptions work in an app?
The checkout depends on what you sell. Apple and Google Play require their in-app purchase or billing systems for digital content and subscriptions, while physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment route. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores, with the checkout matched to the product.
