Choosing
Should you choose WordPress or a custom website?
WordPress suits a team that publishes often and wants to edit most of the site itself. Its choice of plugins gives you flexibility, although someone needs to keep those plugins and the platform updated for security. A custom design fits when your brand, content or audience needs something specific; an adapted template suits a simpler site with a tight brief, provided it is reworked around your real content.
A hosted builder such as Wix, Squarespace or Webflow suits a small site you want to run alone. You give up some control over code and speed, and moving away later can mean a rebuild. A headless setup gives you a custom front end and a separate content editor, useful for heavy editing and speed, with more parts to host and maintain. We recommend WordPress or a custom Next.js site after learning how your team works.
Local
What Virginia organisations need from their websites
Virginia's economy includes farming and high-tech sectors. A farming supplier needs product or capability pages, certifications and downloadable specifications, with a quote form that collects enough detail for a useful response. That gives a buyer something concrete to review before getting in touch.
Northern Virginia includes technology companies and federal agencies, while software, communications and cybersecurity companies operate in the Dulles Technology Corridor and Tysons. A software startup launching a product needs a plain explanation of what it does and a route to join a waitlist or book a demo. The page structure should make those actions easy to find on desktop and mobile.
Rules
Accessibility in a US website project
For a business open to the public, US guidance says the ADA covers goods and services offered on the web and identifies WCAG as helpful guidance. We agree an accessibility target in your brief before page design begins, using the latest WCAG version as guidance for that target.
For a state or local government website, the target in the brief needs to account for the ADA Title II requirement of WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We set up the sitemap, wireframes and desktop and mobile page designs around that target for your review.
How it runs
How your website project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time, so shared boards keep decisions and feedback available across the time difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring your priorities so we can settle what the site needs to do.
- 02
Plan
We prepare wireframes before visual design. Your feedback at this stage should focus on what goes on each page and its order; colours come later.
- 03
Build
We develop the site in clean code or a content management system your team can edit, then test it on real devices and browsers.
- 04
Check
You proofread every page, submit each form and confirm who receives its messages. This catches small errors before visitors encounter them.
- 05
Launch
We set up the domain, email, analytics and Search Console, then walk your team through the setup.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
A few decisions and files give us a useful starting point for your existing brand and content.
- Rank the services or products you want the home page and navigation to feature.
- Gather your logo in SVG, AI or EPS format, plus your brand colours and fonts.
- Share sites you like and dislike, with a line explaining what works or frustrates you.
- Find the account details for your domain, hosting, email, analytics and Search Console, or identify who holds them.
- Collect real photos of your team, premises and finished work; book a photo shoot ahead if needed.
- Put case studies, permitted client logos, testimonials and certifications in a shared folder.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time of your website
The build might use WordPress or custom Next.js code, with the work shaped by the scope you agree.
Page templates
Distinct layouts need separate design and build work, while pages sharing a template need less.
Features
Booking, calculators, member logins, multiple languages and a CRM connection add design, development and testing work.
Content migration
Moving blog posts, news archives and downloadable files from an old site adds transfer and checking work.
Brand readiness
An existing logo and style guide reduce design work compared with deciding the logo, colours and typefaces during the project.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building your website
Registering accounts in an agency's name
Hold your domain and hosting accounts in your business name and grant access to the people doing the work.
Reviewing only on a large screen
Check every page on a phone before approving the design, including the path to contact you.
Copying the old site's entire page list
Choose clear service pages your visitors can scan and your team can keep current.
Leaving search checks until launch
Check page titles, the sitemap and any development indexing block before the site goes live.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Virginia
Page updated 5 November 2026
Is it worth paying for a website build?
A website is worth assessing against the enquiries it helps you receive. Set up analytics to track form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions, then check which pages those visitors started from. That gives you a practical way to assess the site after launch.
How much does it cost to have a website built?
There is no fixed price: the scope, page structure and content work all affect what needs doing. Agree who owns each part, including forms and search setup, and decide who will gather service descriptions, team bios and photos. We can discuss a quote once the scope is agreed.
Which platform should my team choose?
WordPress suits a team that edits a lot of content itself. A custom Next.js site is faster and more secure, and can still include an editor. Start by deciding who will make updates and how often; that gives you a useful basis for the platform decision.
What is included in the search setup?
The search-ready build includes page titles and descriptions, a clear heading structure, an XML sitemap, structured data and fast pages. Planning these into the build takes less effort than fixing them afterwards, so include them when you agree what each page needs.
Will I own my website after launch?
Yes. You own the domain, content and code, with no lock-in. You also talk directly to the people who design and build your product, so you can discuss the work with them throughout the project and understand what is being handed over.
How will we keep the site current after launch?
We provide an editor your team can use for pages, news, projects and careers without training. Decide who will own those updates after launch, especially job posts and news. An old newest post can leave visitors wondering whether your business is still trading.
