Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform app, a native app or a web app?
A cross-platform app is a useful choice when your first release centres on accounts, forms, bookings, payments or content. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android and adding native modules where a feature needs them. If the app depends on deep device features, we go native instead. That choice gives the device feature more direct attention in the build.
Flutter is another cross-platform option. It uses Dart and draws its own interface, which suits a heavily branded app where you want screens to look identical on both platforms. Your team also needs to be willing to work in Dart after the build.
A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool. It skips store review, although it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to their Home Screen. We can discuss these trade-offs against the tasks you need the app to perform.
Local
What Iowa businesses need from an app
Iowa has manufacturing, finance and insurance businesses as well as government services. Where customers already use a web platform frequently, an app can reuse their accounts and data through the existing backend. That gives customers a familiar account while giving you another way to serve the tasks they perform often.
Agriculture is a major part of Iowa’s economy. A field team working on agricultural jobs could need forms, photos, signatures and location recorded against each job, with changes sent back to the office when signal returns.
In northeast Iowa’s regional food system, shops serving repeat customers could use reordering, saved payment details and loyalty features. A fast checkout and notifications sent at a useful point in the purchase flow deserve attention in the screen designs.
Rules
What a US mobile app project has to handle
For a state or local government app, the accessibility requirement changes the screen design and testing work. The app must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA under the applicable rule. We design the mobile screens and flows with that standard in view, then test the build against it as part of the project. If you manage a government service, include this requirement when agreeing the scope, so the screens and testing plan account for it from the start.
How it runs
How a mobile app project runs with us
We work remotely from India using video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India time is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time to 13h30m ahead of Pacific time in winter, and 1 hour less during daylight saving time across most of the mainland US. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback between calls.

Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals. You help us agree what belongs in the scope.
- 02
Design
We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. You can check the flows against the tasks people need to complete.
- 03
Test
We send builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. You try them in use and share feedback.
- 04
Release
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain those accounts for your business.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the material that helps us define the first release and prepare for store submission.
- List the tasks users must complete, in the order they will do them.
- Start developer account registration in your company’s name and check the D-U-N-S requirement.
- Check whether a new personal Google Play account needs closed testing before production release.
- Prepare a privacy policy that matches the data the app collects, for the listing and the app.
- For an app with login, prepare a working demo account and live backend for Apple’s review.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of app development
The amount of design, backend and testing work changes with the features you put in scope.
Integrations
A payment gateway, booking system or scanner needs setup, testing and a plan for failures.
Interface
Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Posts from users bring moderation work, including reporting, blocking and filtering objectionable material.
Live features
Tracking or chat needs persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with mobile app development
Putting login before useful content
Let people explore without an account when the app has no significant account-based features.
Asking for notifications immediately
Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. Set rules for who receives each message and offer in-app controls for notification categories.
Adding an analytics or advertising SDK without updating privacy answers: Check the Google Play Data safety form against the data collected by third-party SDKs before release.

How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price: the scope drives the quote. A major factor is offline work; showing previously loaded data takes less work than letting people edit records offline and resolving conflicts when they sync. The other is the backend: an existing documented API reduces the work compared with building a backend and admin panel from scratch.
How do I choose an app development company?
Ask how the team will handle account deletion, analytics and crashes in the first release. If your app lets people create an account, Apple requires them to be able to start deleting it inside the app. Analytics and crash reporting also give you a way to see where people leave a task and which devices crash.
What is included behind the app screens?
The work can include a backend and an admin panel alongside the app. The backend stores accounts and data; staff can use the admin panel to edit content, look up customers, issue refunds or block abusive accounts. We can also build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools.
Who owns the app code and accounts?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep the developer accounts, signing access and code repository in your business’s name too. Holding those in an agency’s or freelancer’s name can make the app difficult to move if you change who maintains it.
What support does an app need after launch?
Plan for maintenance releases and check how people use the app after installing it. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Track how many users return, where they leave the main task and the crash-free rate, so you can see whether a release helped or hurt.
How should payments work inside the app?
The checkout depends on what you sell. Apple and Google require their in-app purchase or billing systems for digital goods and subscriptions used in the app. Physical goods and services use another payment method, such as a card gateway. Some storefronts or regions allow outside payment options or alternative billing.
