Choosing
Which e-commerce platform should you choose?
Shopify suits a team that wants hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled by the platform. You can add features through apps, though app subscriptions add recurring costs and deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan. It is the simplest option to run.
WooCommerce suits a business already using WordPress, particularly when the site has substantial content or you want control of the code, data and hosting. That control comes with work: someone needs to manage hosting, updates, security and plugin compatibility.
A headless or custom storefront, such as Next.js connected to a commerce back end, suits an unusual catalogue, a product configurator or a content-led brand. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. We recommend an option after understanding your products and operations, including how much control your team needs and who will maintain the store.
Local
What Iowa businesses need from an online store
Iowa’s manufacturing economy includes businesses that sell to other businesses. A manufacturer or distributor with a wholesale catalogue may need customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities, quote requests and ordering on account. We also connect accounting, ERP and marketplace tools where those links are part of the operation, so orders and stock do not have to be handled by hand across separate systems.
Northeast Iowa has developed a regional food system, with local food grown and consumed in the region. A food seller taking orders through social media or messages may need a catalogue, online payment and order tracking. Product groupings and filters help customers find what they want; pack choices can have their own prices, stock and images.
Rules
What a United States store needs to handle
Stripe lists the United States as a country where businesses can sign up to accept payments. We configure a supported gateway for your platform and compare its payment methods, currencies, settlement arrangements and refund handling with your needs before checkout is set up.
Commercial email must include a valid physical postal address and a clear way to opt out, and opt-out requests must be honoured. For your email connection, we set up those details in the messages and the opt-out route so your commercial email reflects those requirements.
How it runs
How an e-commerce development project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is ahead of the mainland United States, with the difference changing seasonally. The shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across that time difference, so work can continue between conversations.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals, then agree the store’s scope with you. Bring the decisions and operations the store needs to support.
- 02
Design
We prepare product, collection and checkout page designs for desktop and mobile. You review them and give feedback before we write code.
- 03
Prepare the catalogue
We import a small product sample first. You check titles, variants, prices and images; once the format is right, we import the full catalogue.
- 04
Build and check
We build the store and test it on devices and browsers. You place test orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases, then check stock, emails and the admin.
- 05
Launch and care
We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, followed by ongoing support. Your feedback remains part of the work as the store moves towards launch.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
A store needs more than product pages: its settings, policies and everyday admin need decisions from your business too.
- Product spreadsheetInclude names, descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
- PhotosGather consistent images from several angles, including each colour variant, and keep the original files.
- PoliciesPrepare plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms information.
- Gateway documentsGather registration, bank and identity details, and apply for an account in your business’s name.
- Tax and delivery decisionsCheck applicable taxes with an accountant and decide your couriers, delivery areas and charges.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time needed
The scope determines how much work is needed before your store is ready.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet is quicker to import than information spread across an old store, supplier documents and photo threads.
Integrations
An order export to accounting involves less work than syncing stock and prices with an ERP or several marketplaces.
Migration
Moving customers and order history as well as products expands the scope. Existing customers will usually need a password reset email.
Checkout and pricing rules
Delivery-date choices, wholesale tiers or customer-specific catalogues add work, as does each market with its own currency, language and tax setup.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid during a store build
Losing old links
During migration, map each old product and category URL to its closest new page with a permanent redirect, including products you no longer sell.
Sending emails to spam
Set up SPF or DKIM authentication for the domain used to send order emails.
Adding an app for every feature
Review what each app or plugin does and remove those you no longer use. Each can add scripts, clutter or conflicts.
Surprising shoppers at checkout
Show delivery and tax estimates on product or cart pages before the final checkout step.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Iowa
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does an e-commerce website cost to develop?
There is no fixed price. The amount of work depends on the size of your catalogue, the number of variants and the complexity of products such as bundles, kits or items sold by weight. Custom choices such as engraving also affect the scope we need to agree with you.
Can you move our existing store?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the existing and destination platforms allow it. Tell us which records your team uses in the current store, so we can discuss what needs to move and check what the platforms support before agreeing the scope.
What is included in the product setup?
We import the catalogue and set up variants and stock management. We also build fast product pages with structured data, making them eligible for rich search results. Your catalogue needs to give the team a practical way to manage the products and stock it works with each day.
Can you set up our delivery rules?
Yes. We turn your delivery decisions into shipping zones, rates and conditions in the store. That can include flat, weight-based or price-based rates, free-delivery thresholds and local pickup. We also account for products that cannot be sent to certain areas, such as liquids or oversized items.
Will we own the store after launch?
You own your domain, content and code. Your store is not locked to the team that built it, so ownership of those assets stays with your business after launch. Keep that ownership in mind when organising the domain, content and code used by your store.
What should we check after the store launches?
Track conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration. Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change. Give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.
