Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform or native app?
A cross-platform app is a practical choice when your product centres on accounts, forms, lists, maps, bookings, payments or content. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android and adding native modules when a feature needs them. It renders each platform’s own interface components, and some logic can also be shared with a React web app. That gives you a common codebase to maintain while allowing for platform-specific work.
Native development fits an app that depends on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or a new platform feature at launch. Swift is used for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. The trade-off is maintaining a separate codebase for each platform, so the work involved in building and updating the product is different.
A progressive web app is another option, particularly for a staff tool that does not need a store listing. It skips store review, but it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can request notification permission only after someone adds it to the Home Screen.
Local
What Sydney organisations need from an app
Sydney has strengths in tourism, alongside education, finance and manufacturing. A restaurant serving repeat customers might need reordering, loyalty and saved payment details, with a fast checkout and notifications timed around the customer’s activity. An appointment business, such as a clinic or salon, needs a different set of screens: booking, reminders, payments and a staff view of the day’s schedule.
The University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales are major universities in the city. An education organisation with a frequently used web platform could add an app that reuses the same accounts, data and backend, so users do not need a separate set of records. A consumer or marketplace startup has another priority: coverage across both stores and analytics that show whether people return after installing.
Rules
What an app project in Australia has to handle
If you provide health services, your business is covered by the Privacy Act regardless of turnover. Plan the information your app collects before preparing its privacy policy. We put a link to your policy inside the app and include it in the store listing; the policy needs to reflect the data the app actually collects.
Australian guidance on equal access to digital goods and services recommends WCAG 2.2 at Level AA as a minimum. We plan the app’s screens against that target and include accessibility checks in testing, so it is part of the design and build work.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 4h30m behind Sydney, or 5h30m behind during Sydney daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback and track work between calls.

Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the main task you want a user to complete, along with any constraints the app needs to accommodate.
- 02
Design
We design screens for iOS and Android and refine them with your feedback before writing code. This is where you can check that the flow makes sense for the people who will use it.
- 03
Check the prototype
Put the clickable design in front of customers or staff. Changes to a screen are far cheaper at this stage than after it has been built.
- 04
Test on your phone
We provide test builds through TestFlight or the Google Play testing tracks. Use them in the situations where the app will be needed and share what you notice.
- 05
Submit
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts while we carry out the release work.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
A few decisions and details will make the first conversation more useful.
- List what users must do in the first release, in the order they would do it.
- Name the systems the app must connect to, and note whether each has an API and who holds admin access.
- If you need a new personal Google Play developer account, plan for its required closed test before production release.
- If people can create accounts, include an in-app path to start deletion for the Apple version.
- For Google Play, also plan an in-app deletion path and a web link for deletion requests.
- Choose the first-release analytics and crash reporting you need, such as Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The scope determines how much design, backend work and testing the app needs.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Integrations
Each payment gateway, booking system or device connection needs setup, testing and a way to handle failures.
Screen design
Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
Backend
A documented existing API reduces the work. A new backend and admin panel can be as substantial as the app itself.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid
Wrapping the website
Apple expects an app to offer more than a repackaged site. Define useful app tasks before choosing an app shell.
Asking for notifications immediately
Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications remain off until the user agrees.
Adding an analytics or advertising SDK late
Update the store privacy answers to cover the data it collects, including Google Play’s Data safety form.
Leaving access in an agency’s name
Keep developer accounts and signing access in your business’s name so the app is easier to move.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Sydney
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The work changes with the number of user types and their separate screens and permissions, as well as the level of offline access. Showing previously loaded data is a smaller task than allowing offline edits and resolving conflicts when records sync. Agree the scope before requesting a quote.
How do I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that can explain how the app will be measured after release. Ask how you will see where people leave the main task, how many return after installing and whether a release changes the crash-free rate. Also ask how targeted notifications fit the actions customers actually take.
Can you add purchases and subscriptions to the app?
Yes. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. Apple requires in-app purchase for digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app; physical goods and services used outside it need another payment method, such as a card gateway. What you sell therefore changes the checkout we plan.
Will I own the app and its code?
Yes. You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Make ownership part of the scope you agree with us before the build begins, and ask for the code and content to be handed over in a form your business can keep and use.
What happens after the app is released?
Launch is followed by ongoing support for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. Plan maintenance releases as part of the product’s care: Google Play requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, and outdated apps can become unavailable to new users on newer devices.
How do you set up push notifications?
We set up a sending service such as Firebase Cloud Messaging, alongside rules for who receives a message and when. We also provide in-app settings so people can switch off notification categories they do not want. You will need to decide which messages are useful for each audience.
