Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build your own?
An existing theme is a lighter place to start when its layouts suit your products and the way customers buy. Customising it also makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you room for unusual products and a distinct brand, though later layout changes need development work.
For features beyond the theme, an app can add functionality quickly, but it also brings recurring fees, extra scripts and dependence on its maker. Custom code or a custom app fits a specific need more closely and needs maintenance as Shopify changes. A headless storefront suits content-led brands or unusual buying flows, but gives up the theme editor and some apps that work through themes.
If you sell across countries, Shopify markets can keep local-currency prices, translations and international domains in one store. Separate stores suit different catalogues or teams, or payouts in different currencies. Also check gateway costs: third-party gateways carry an extra Shopify transaction fee, even with Shopify Payments active.
Local
What Sydney businesses need from a store
Sydney has strengths in manufacturing and tourism. A manufacturer selling direct to customers may need reviews and subscriptions connected to store data, while a retailer with a physical shop needs its online and in-store stock in one system. We can connect those features and use Shopify’s point-of-sale app alongside the online store.
Sydney is also home to the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. For an organisation selling products to customers in several countries, a store needs local-currency prices, translated content and market-specific shipping. Product pages can also use metafields to show specifications, care instructions or size charts in their own sections.
Rules
What an Australian store needs to handle
Australian GST applies to most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. We set up the store’s tax settings for your market and products. Store policies must also respect Australian Consumer Law: we set up policy pages without wording that overrides consumer guarantees.
Commercial emails and texts need customer permission, and unsubscribe requests must be acted on within 5 working days. We set up permission collection and unsubscribe handling as part of the store’s marketing connections.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work remotely from India over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 4h30m behind Sydney, and 5h30m behind during daylight saving time. The shared board keeps feedback and decisions visible while each side is working.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals. You help us agree what belongs in the store’s scope before design begins.
- 02
Design
We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback before we write the theme code.
- 03
Build and test
We develop the store and test it on real devices and browsers. We also prepare the domain, email, analytics and search setup for launch.
- 04
Preview
Theme work happens on an unpublished copy. You review and approve it before publication, while your live store keeps trading.
- 05
Handover
We show your team how to manage orders, products and discounts, so you can carry out those tasks yourself.

Cost & time
What affects cost and time
The scope of the store determines the development and testing work.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme is a smaller piece of work than designing and building a custom theme around your brand.
Business logic
Custom discounts or checkout rules add development and testing. Custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs need Shopify Plus.
Migration depth
Moving products alone is lighter than also moving customers, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects.
Systems and markets
ERP, accounting, warehouse or marketplace connections add work, especially with two-way stock and price sync. Extra markets can add prices, translations and shipping rates.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Loose product data
Keep tags, product types and vendors consistent. Automated collections and filters use these fields, so inconsistent entries can put products in the wrong place or hide them.
Missing redirects
Map old URLs to their new destinations and import the map at launch. Redirects work only from URLs that no longer load a page.
Changes on the live theme
Duplicate the theme, make changes on the copy and preview it before publishing. An error on the live theme is visible to visitors immediately.
Unfinished launch content
Replace theme demo content, placeholder policies and default notification wording before customers see the store.

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers are the theme design, the depth of any migration and custom business logic such as discount or checkout rules. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed, so it reflects the work your store needs.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. We build new stores and move stores from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform, including products, customers, orders and redirects. The service also includes training, so your team can run orders, products and discounts after handover without needing a developer for those tasks.
How do I handle a product with several choices?
Shopify supports up to three options per product, such as size, colour and material. A fourth choice, such as engraving text or a custom length, needs line item properties in the theme or an app. Bring examples of those products when you discuss the catalogue.
Will the store be ready for search at launch?
Yes. We build with clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages from launch. We also use optimised images, clean structure and metadata. These are parts of the build you can review alongside the product pages before the store goes live.
Who owns the store and controls access?
You do. The store stays in your account, and a developer works through a collaborator account that you approve. You choose its permissions and can remove access. You also own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store.
What happens after launch?
Ongoing support follows launch from the people who designed and built the store. You can also review installed apps, staff accounts and collaborator access periodically, removing anything no longer used. Shopify expires collaborator access that goes unused.
