What you get

What’s included in mobile app development

  • App design

Screens and flows designed for iOS and Android conventions.

  • Cross-platform build

One React Native codebase for both platforms, with native modules where needed.

  • Backend & APIs

Accounts, data, notifications and admin tools behind the app.

  • Push notifications

Timely, targeted notifications that bring people back.

  • Payments & subscriptions

In-app purchases and subscriptions on both stores.

  • Store launch

App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.

Tools we use: React Native, Expo, Swift, Kotlin, Firebase, Node.js.

Choosing

Should you choose a cross-platform or native app?

We usually use React Native for apps on iOS and Android. It shares a codebase across both platforms, with native modules where a feature needs them. It uses each platform’s interface components, and web developers can contribute; some logic can also be shared with a React website. This gives you a practical route when you want to cover both stores without maintaining separate native codebases.

Native development in Swift and Kotlin suits an app built around deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. The trade-off is maintaining a separate codebase for each platform. Flutter is another option: it draws its own interface and suits a highly customised visual design, though your team needs to be willing to work in Dart.

A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool. It skips store review, but it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them, and iPhone notification permission works only after it is added to the Home Screen. We learn what your users need to do and agree the scope with you before choosing an approach.

Local

What Newcastle organisations need from an app

Health services are among Newcastle’s largest employers. For a clinic or appointment service, an app brief could cover booking, reminders and payments, alongside a staff view of the day’s schedule. Agree who needs access to each part before designing the screens, so staff have a useful way to manage appointments as well as a way for patients to book them.

The University of Newcastle is the city’s main tertiary education provider, and the Tighes Hill campus offers business, hospitality and trades courses. An education app that already has a web platform to work with can share a backend across the app, website and admin tools, keeping accounts and data in one place. For practical field work, a separate brief might call for job forms, photos and signatures that sync when a connection returns.

Rules

What an app project in Australia has to handle

Health service providers are covered by Australia’s Privacy Act regardless of turnover. For a health app, we set up links to a privacy policy inside the app and in its store listing; the policy needs to match the information the app actually collects. Have that information ready when the screens and account flows are agreed.

Australian guidance recommends WCAG 2.2 Level AA for digital access. We use that guidance when setting up the app’s screen designs and reviewing the flows people need to complete.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

You speak directly to the people designing and building your app. India time is 4h30m behind Sydney time, or 5h30m behind during daylight saving; we keep work moving across that difference through direct conversations and feedback on the work in progress.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the task you most want people to complete and the people who will use the app.

  2. 02

    Design

Put the clickable prototype in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback lets us change screens before they have been built, when changes are less costly.

  3. 03

    Test

Try development builds on your own phone through TestFlight or Google Play’s internal or closed testing tracks. Tell us what happens when you use the app for a real task.

  4. 04

    Launch

We handle the store listings, submission and review. You can check the listing details and prepare your business for people starting to use the app.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

A few practical details will help us agree what belongs in the first release.

  • List the tasks users must complete, in the order they will do them.
  • Note the website, booking, CRM or payment systems involved, whether each has an API, and who has admin access.
  • Plan to keep developer accounts, signing access and the code repository in your business’s name.
  • For a login app, prepare a working demo account and live backend for Apple’s review.
  • For a new personal Google Play developer account, plan a closed test with at least 12 opted-in testers before production release.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and time of app development

The scope determines how much design, development and testing the work needs.

  • User roles

Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.

  • Integrations

A payment gateway, booking system or connected device needs setup, testing and handling for failures.

  • Screen variations

Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • Live features

Tracking or chat needs persistent connections and more backend work than data loaded on request.

  • Existing systems

A backend with a documented API reduces the work; a new backend and admin panel add a substantial build.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Newcastle

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price. The scope of the backend and admin panel, and the level of offline working you need, are major drivers. Showing previously loaded data without a signal takes less work than letting people edit records offline and resolving conflicts when they sync. We send you a free quote once the scope is agreed.

How should I choose an app developer?

Choose a team that can explain what your app lets people do and how they will reach that value. Ask how it will avoid simply wrapping your website in an app shell, which risks store rejection. Also discuss whether users need an account before they can try the main features.

Can you include payments and account deletion?

Yes. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions, and account deletion needs to be part of the flow when users can create an account. Apple requires an in-app way to start deletion; Google Play also requires a web link for deletion requests. Google Play billing rules distinguish digital purchases from physical goods and services.

Will I own the app and its code?

You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. We publish the app under your own developer accounts, so the store listings and submission sit with your business. Make sure the people responsible for the app know where that access is held and can use it when needed.

What happens after the app is launched?

We provide ongoing support for bug fixes, operating system updates and new features. Plan maintenance releases as Google Play changes its Android API requirements. Analytics and crash reporting in the first release also help you see where people leave a task and which devices crash, so you can decide what to address next.
