Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform or native app?
For an app built around accounts, bookings, forms, lists or payments, cross-platform development is a practical option. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android and adding native modules when a feature needs them. Shared code reduces the amount you need to maintain across platforms, while the native modules give you a route to device-specific features.
Flutter is another cross-platform option. It uses Dart and draws its own interface, so it suits a heavily branded app where you want screens to look identical across platforms. Your future development team will need to be comfortable working in Dart, which is worth considering alongside the design.
Native development uses Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. It fits deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work, but leaves you with separate codebases to build and maintain. We choose the approach around the features your app needs, going native when deep device access calls for it.
Local
What Prince Edward Island businesses need from an app
Farming is central to the island economy. For a farm with staff working in the field, an app could collect job forms, photos, signatures and locations without a signal, then sync the records back to the office when a connection returns. The office needs access to those records as well as the people filling them in.
Tourism is another important industry. A restaurant serving repeat customers could use an app for reordering, loyalty and saved payment details, with a fast checkout and notifications timed to the offer. Those are specific flows to discuss before deciding what belongs in the first release.
Food processing is also an island business activity, including frozen potatoes, vegetables and berries. A processor with an existing website could connect an app and admin tools to a shared backend, keeping customer accounts and data in the same place.
Rules
What an app project in Canada has to handle
For commercial activity involving personal information, PIPEDA affects how a private-sector organisation collects, uses and discloses that information. We plan the account screens around the information you need, with clear collection notices and consent controls that reflect how the app uses it.
Checkout needs a decision early. Digital content and subscriptions used in an app follow the stores' in-app billing rules; physical goods and services need a different payment route. Stripe accepts Canadian business sign-ups, so we can plan a card checkout for eligible physical purchases and the appropriate store billing for digital ones.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is ahead of Atlantic Time, and the gap changes when Atlantic clocks move for daylight saving. The shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across that gap.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the task you want customers or staff to complete in the app.
- 02
Design
We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. Review the flows as the people using them would.
- 03
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of customers or staff. Their feedback gives us a chance to change a screen before it has been built.
- 04
Test
We send builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Use the app for real tasks and tell us where the flow needs work.
- 05
Submit
We handle the listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. For an app with login, prepare a working demo account and live backend, and leave room for fixes and resubmission.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
If customers already use your web platform frequently, bring details of the accounts and data they use there.
- Developer accountsStart registration in your business name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number for verification.
- Existing systemsList your website, booking software and payment provider, including API availability and who holds admin access.
- Privacy policyPrepare a policy matching the information the app collects for the listing and the app itself.
- Third-party toolsIdentify analytics or advertising software so its data collection is covered in Google Play's Data safety form.
- Account deletionIf users can create accounts, plan how they will start deleting them inside the app.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of app development
The scope of the build determines how much design, development and testing work is needed.
Existing backend
A documented API can save work; a new backend and admin panel can be as substantial as the app.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even with shared data.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than data loaded on request.
Screen variations
Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User-generated content
Moderation needs filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with app development
Wrapping a website
An app shell around your existing site risks rejection. Plan useful app features that give people a reason to install it.
Demanding sign-up immediately
Let people see and use relevant parts of the app before asking them to register when account features are not central.
Leaving access with an agency
Keep developer accounts, signing access and the code repository in your business's name so the app is easier to move.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Prince Edward Island
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to pay someone to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The work changes substantially when users need to edit records offline and resolve sync conflicts, when notifications need audience rules and settings, or when you add store subscriptions. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed, with those choices set out.
Which company should I hire to develop my app?
Choose a team that plans for analytics and crash reporting in the first release. Ask how it will identify screens where people give up, devices that crash and whether users return after installing. Those details give you a way to assess the app after release, beyond its download count.
What is included in an app build?
An app project commonly includes the phone app, a backend for accounts and data, and an admin panel for your staff. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools. Your staff can then look up customers or manage content without calling a developer.
Will I own the app and its code?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. That gives your business control of the assets behind the product and its online presence. Ask for the ownership arrangements to be clear before work begins, so you know what belongs to you.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support covers bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can be delivered over the air with a tool such as Expo EAS Update. Native code changes, new permissions and Expo SDK upgrades still need a store release.
Can the app send notifications to different customers?
Yes. We set up push notifications for timely, targeted messages. Before adding them, decide which messages are useful to the people receiving them and where they fit in the app experience, so the notification leads back to a relevant task or piece of content.
