Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform app, a native app or a web app?
A cross-platform app is a practical choice when the main tasks involve accounts, forms, bookings, payments or content. Frameworks such as React Native and Flutter share most of the code across iOS and Android, so you have less platform-specific code to maintain. You still need to design and test the experience on both platforms, particularly where the screens or device behaviour differ.
Native development gives you separate Swift and Kotlin apps. It fits products that depend on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features as soon as they launch. The trade-off is maintaining separate codebases. That affects the work after launch as well as the initial build, so the choice should follow what your app actually needs to do.
A progressive web app is another option, especially for a staff tool. It skips store review, though it will not appear in app stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. Consider how your users will find and return to the tool before choosing this route.

What Manitoba organisations may need from an app
Manufacturing, natural resources and agribusiness are part of Manitoba's economy. A field team carrying out maintenance or inspections could need job forms, photos, signatures and location details that sync back to the office when signal returns. Decide how much must work offline: displaying previously loaded information is a smaller task than editing records and resolving conflicts when they sync.
Government-funded institutions are among Manitoba's largest employers. An institution handling appointments could need booking, reminders, payments and a staff view of the day's schedule, so people using the service and the staff managing it have the information they need.
Churchill attracts wildlife watchers. A tourism business using an app to communicate with visitors could need notifications with clear rules for who receives each message and when, plus settings that let people switch off categories they do not want.
Rules
What a mobile app project in Canada has to handle
PIPEDA sets federal rules for how private-sector organisations collect, use and disclose personal information in commercial activity. If your app handles customer information, we set up account and data tools and screens that explain what information you collect and how it is used or disclosed.
Canadian businesses can sign up with Stripe to accept payments. For physical goods or services used outside the app, Apple requires payment by another method such as a card gateway. We set up the checkout to match what you sell.
How it runs
How a mobile app development project runs with us
We work remotely through video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Manitoba, so the shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across the time difference.

Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the task you want people to complete and tell us who will use it.
- 02
Design
We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. Review the flow as a user would, from the first screen to the completed task.
- 03
Test the prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback gives us a chance to change screens before they are built, when changes are less costly.
- 04
Build
For a cross-platform project, we use a React Native codebase for both platforms and add native modules where needed. You can review the working app against the agreed scope.
- 05
Submit
We handle store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain control of the accounts used to publish the app.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
These preparations give us a clearer view of the first release and its route to the stores.
- List the actions users must complete in the first release, in the order they will take them.
- Prepare a privacy policy that matches the information the app collects, for the app and its store listing.
- Start registering developer accounts in your company's name and obtain the D-U-N-S number needed for organisation verification.
- Plan for a closed test if you intend to use a new personal Google Play developer account.
- For an app with login, prepare a working demo account and a live backend for Apple's review.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and work involved in mobile app development
The scope of the app and the systems around it determine how much design, build and testing work is needed.
Real-time features
Live tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Integrations
A payment gateway, booking system, CRM or connected device each needs setup, testing and a way to handle failures.
Existing systems
A backend with a documented API reduces the work; building a backend and admin panel from scratch adds a substantial part of the project.
Shared data
A backend serving your app, website and admin tools keeps customer accounts and data in one place, so plan the connections between those tools.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with mobile app development
Wrapping the website
Apple expects more than a repackaged site. Give people a useful app experience instead of putting the existing website inside an app shell.
Demanding sign-up too early
Let people see value before asking them to create an account. Apple's guidelines ask apps without significant account-based features to allow use without login.
Asking for notifications immediately
Request permission when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications remain off until the user allows them.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Manitoba
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to have an app developed?
There is no fixed price. The number of user types changes the screens and permissions needed, while custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing work. Agree what belongs in the scope before seeking a quote, so it reflects the app you intend to build.
How do I choose an app development company?
Choose a company that can explain how it will build and measure the tasks your users need. Ask what analytics and crash reporting will be included in the first release. Tools such as Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics can show screen use, where people give up and which devices crash.
Is React Native a good choice for my app?
React Native suits many apps, while native development fits those requiring deep device features. React Native uses JavaScript or TypeScript and renders each platform's own interface components. Your web developers can contribute, and some logic can be shared with a React web app if you have one.
Can you include payments and subscriptions?
Yes. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. The checkout must match what you sell: Google Play requires its billing system for digital goods and subscriptions sold in the app, but it must not be used for physical goods or services such as groceries or event tickets.
Who should own the app accounts and code?
Your business should hold the developer accounts, signing access and code. Keeping them in a freelancer's or agency's name can make the app hard to move later. Check who controls the code repository and publishing access before work begins, so a change of supplier does not leave those assets out of your hands.
What happens after the app launches?
We provide ongoing support for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out through an over-the-air tool; native code changes and new permissions still need a store release. Track retention and crash-free rate to see how people use the app and how releases perform.
