Choosing

Should you build a cross-platform app or go native?

A cross-platform app is a practical choice when the main tasks involve accounts, forms, bookings, payments or content. React Native shares most of the code across iOS and Android while rendering each platform’s own interface components. Web developers can contribute, and some logic can be shared with a React website.

We usually use React Native, adding native modules where a feature needs them. A fully native build suits deeper device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features needed at launch. The trade-off is maintaining separate iPhone and Android codebases. Flutter is another cross-platform option for a heavily branded interface; its team needs to work in Dart.

A progressive web app can suit a staff tool and avoids store review. It will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them, and on an iPhone it can ask to send notifications only after being added to the Home Screen. Consider where your users will expect to find the product before choosing that route.

Local

What North Dakota businesses need from an app

Agriculture is a major part of North Dakota’s economy, alongside petroleum, food processing and technology. An app for people handling records in those industries needs a clear way to enter and review data, backed by accounts and an admin panel where staff can manage it without calling a developer.

North Dakota also has a state-owned bank and flour mill. For an organisation that already has a web platform and frequent users, an app can give those users access to the same accounts and data, with the existing backend serving both. The useful starting point is the task people repeat often enough to want on their phone.

Rules

What a US app project has to handle

For a state or local government app, the accessibility requirement changes the screens and testing: the app must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We design the interface with that standard in mind and set up accessibility checks for the app’s screens and flows. This needs to be part of the build plan from the start, so accessibility is considered alongside the tasks people need to complete.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 10h30m (Eastern) to 13h30m (Pacific) ahead of the mainland US in winter, and 1 hour less during daylight saving time except in Arizona. The shared board keeps feedback and decisions visible across the time difference.

Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We agree the scope with you before design starts.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code.

  3. 03

    Prototype

Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback can reveal changes while screens are still cheaper to alter.

  4. 04

    Build and test

We send test builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks, so you can try the app and give feedback from real use.

  5. 05

    Launch

We handle the App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring the practical details that will shape the first release.

  • Write the tasks users must complete, in the order they would do them.
  • List your website, CRM, booking or payment systems, their APIs and who holds admin access.
  • Start Apple and Google developer account registration in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
  • Prepare a privacy policy that matches the data the app will collect.
  • List the notifications you want to send and which categories users should be able to switch off.
  • Plan to keep signing access and code repositories in your business’s name.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline

The scope of the work determines the effort needed to design, build and test it.

  • User roles

Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even with a shared backend.

  • Interface requirements

Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • User-generated content

We need to set up filtering, reporting, blocking and contact details for an app that lets users post content.

  • Existing backend

A documented API reduces the work; building a backend and admin panel from scratch can be as large a task as building the app.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid when building an app

  • Wrapping a website in an app shell

Plan useful app features beyond the existing site. Apple expects more than a repackaged website, and a wrapper risks rejection.

  • Requiring sign-up too early

Let people see value before asking them to register. Apple’s guidelines ask apps without significant account-based features to allow use without login.

  • Adding a tracking SDK without revisiting privacy answers

Update Google Play’s Data safety form to cover data collected by third-party SDKs as well as the rest of the app.

Questions

Asked by businesses in North Dakota

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price. The work changes considerably if users need to create and edit records offline and sync them later, rather than only see previously loaded data. Integrations such as a payment gateway, booking system or scanner also add setup, testing and failure handling.

How do I choose an app development company?

Choose a team that can explain how it would support your customers’ actual tasks. For a shop or restaurant, discuss reordering, saved payment details and notification timing. For a consumer or marketplace product, ask how the app will cover both stores and show whether users return.

Can the app use the same backend as my website?

Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools. For the first release, plan analytics and crash reporting too: tools such as Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics show which screens people use, where they give up and which devices crash.

Who owns the app and developer accounts?

You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. We handle store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. Keeping those assets and accounts under your control gives you the ability to decide who works on the app later.

What support is available after launch?

We provide ongoing support for bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can ship through an over-the-air tool such as Expo EAS Update. Native code changes, new permissions and Expo SDK upgrades still need a store release.

Does an app need an account deletion option?

Yes, if it lets people create accounts. Apple requires an in-app way to start deleting an account; disabling it alone is insufficient. Google Play also requires an in-app deletion path for the account and associated data, plus a web link where people can request deletion.
