Choosing
Should you choose WordPress or a custom website?
WordPress suits a team that publishes often and wants to edit most of the site itself. Its range of plugins gives you options for adding features, though the site needs regular updates to stay secure. A custom Next.js site is faster and more secure, and can still include an editor. We recommend an approach after learning how your team works and who will update the content.
A hosted builder such as Wix, Squarespace or Webflow suits a small site you want to run alone. The trade-off is less control over the code and speed; moving away later can mean rebuilding. A headless setup takes a different approach, pairing a custom front end with a separate editor. It fits a site that needs speed and heavy editing, but adds parts to host and maintain. Before choosing, list the pages your team expects to change and how often those changes will happen.
Local
What North Dakota businesses need from their websites
Agriculture, food processing and technology are major industries in the state. A manufacturer or business-to-business supplier needs capability or product pages, certifications and downloadable specifications. A quote form should ask for enough detail for the team to respond properly.
Oil extraction from the Bakken formation has played a major role in the state. For an oil-sector company, a useful website brief covers the page structure, content editor, forms and launch, with an owner assigned to each part from the start.
The state also owns a flour mill in Grand Forks. For an organisation with a public-facing site, the navigation needs to reflect the services or products it wants visitors to find first, rather than leaving readers to work through an unranked list.
Rules
What a United States website project has to handle
If your business is open to the public, accessibility belongs in the brief. US Department of Justice guidance says Title III of the ADA covers goods and services offered on the web and identifies WCAG as helpful guidance. We agree an accessibility target with you and use it to guide the desktop and mobile page designs. W3C encourages using the latest version of WCAG.
For a state or local government website, the project has a specified target: WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We set that target in the design brief so it informs the pages from the start.
How it runs
How a website project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m to 13h30m ahead of the mainland US in winter, and the difference is 1 hour less during daylight saving time. We use the shared board to keep feedback and project work visible across that gap.
- 01
Discovery
You explain who buys from you, why they choose you and what visitors should do on the site. We use those answers to shape the sitemap.
- 02
Wireframes
We arrange the content on each page before visual design. Your feedback focuses on the order and priorities at this stage; colours come later.
- 03
Build
We develop the agreed site in Next.js or WordPress. Your editing needs inform the choice before development starts.
- 04
Review
You proofread every page, submit each form once and confirm who receives its messages. This gives us a chance to correct small errors before visitors see them.
- 05
Launch
We set up the domain, email, analytics and Search Console, then walk your team through the handover.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring what you have and note what still needs work.
- Your goalIdentify the action you want, such as a quote request, job application or call.
- Enquiry ownersName the person who handles each type of request.
- Brand filesGather your logo in vector format, colours and fonts, or note what still needs creating.
- PhotosCollect images of your team, premises and finished work; book a photo shoot ahead if needed.
- Proof of workPut case studies, permitted client logos, testimonials, certifications and memberships in a folder.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of a website?
The work involved changes with the content, design and material you already have.
Content readiness
Copy and photos ready to publish keep the work smaller; copywriting, photography or translation add to the scope.
Migration
Blog posts, news archives and downloadable files from an old site add moving and checking work.
Brand readiness
An existing logo and style guide reduce design work compared with deciding the logo, colours and typefaces during the project.
Design approach
A custom design suits specific brand or audience needs. An adapted template suits a simple site and tight brief, provided it is reworked around real content.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building your website
Leaving content until the end
Use real headings and paragraphs in the design. Their length can change a layout that looked finished with placeholder text.
Reviewing only on a large screen
Check every page on a phone first, including how the content reads and how the layout fits.
Copying every existing page
Review what visitors need and keep service pages clear. A shorter site is easier to scan and maintain.
Postponing search setup
Check page titles, the sitemap and any indexing block before launch. An indexing block left from development can keep the site out of search results.

Is web development still worth it for my business?
It is worth considering when your site needs to support a clear action, such as an enquiry, and give you a way to see how visitors reach it. In analytics, track form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions, then check which pages those visitors started from.
How much does it cost to have a website built?
There is no fixed price. The number of distinct page templates is a major driver, as is the work needed to gather service descriptions, case studies and photos. Who prepares that content affects the scope. We send a free quote once we have agreed the scope with you.
Can you build the website around our existing brand?
Yes. We build on your existing logo, colours and fonts, and prepare brand assets for the web where needed. Share the files you already use and tell us which parts of the brand should carry through to the website, so those choices can inform the design.
What is included in the website build?
The build includes a content editor and search setup. Your team can use the editor for pages, news, projects and careers without training. We also prepare metadata, structured data and sitemaps, with fast load times on every page, so the site is ready for search.
Will we own the website after launch?
Yes. You own the domain, content and code, with no lock-in. Before handover, identify who holds the login details for your domain registrar, hosting, email provider, analytics and Search Console. Having those contacts or details ready helps your team keep control of the site.
Can you support the site after launch?
Yes. Our launch and care process includes ongoing support after the site goes live. You should also decide who in your organisation will update news, projects and job posts. Keeping that responsibility clear helps prevent a site from displaying old posts that leave visitors wondering whether you are still trading.
