Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform, native or web app?
For an app built around accounts, forms, bookings, maps or content, cross-platform development is a practical starting point. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase between iOS and Android and adding native modules where a feature needs them. You get coverage on both platforms without maintaining an entirely separate app for each. The screen flows should still feel appropriate on each device.
A native build in Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android fits an app with deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or a need for new platform features at launch. That flexibility comes with separate codebases to build and maintain. A progressive web app is another option, particularly for staff tools: it skips store review, but does not appear in app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can request notification permission only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. Start with the features people need, then choose the route that supports them.
Local
What New Jersey organisations need from an app
New Jersey has tourism and information technology businesses, among other sectors. A tourism business taking appointments needs booking, reminders and payments, along with a staff view of the day's schedule. An information technology startup launching a consumer or marketplace product has a different brief: reach customers on both app stores and see whether they return after installing.
Logistics and warehouse businesses in South Jersey also have work that happens away from an office connection. A field app for delivery or inspection teams needs job forms, photos, signatures and location details available on the move, with records synced back to the office when signal returns. Define what staff need to record on each job before deciding how much of that work must happen offline.
Rules
What US public-sector apps have to handle
For a state or local government app, the accessibility requirement changes the screen design and build. The app must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA under the applicable rule. We design the iOS and Android screens with that standard in scope and set up the build work around it, so accessibility is part of the project requirements from the start. Include the relevant public services and screen flows when agreeing that scope.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India time is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less ahead during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback and keep track of the work across that difference.
- 01
Discover and design
We learn about your business, audience and goals, agree the scope with you, then refine screen designs with your feedback before coding starts. Tell us which tasks people need to complete.
- 02
Review the prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback helps identify screen changes while the design is still easier to alter.
- 03
Try test builds
We send builds to your phone through TestFlight on iPhone or Google Play testing tracks on Android. Use them as your customers or staff would and share what needs attention.
- 04
Prepare the release
We handle store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts while we work through the release.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather the access and product details that will shape the build and store release.
- Developer accountsArrange your own Apple and Google accounts for the store work.
- Business verificationOrganisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number, so start that check early.
- Connected systemsList your website, CRM, booking or payment systems, their APIs and who holds admin access.
- Privacy policyPrepare a policy that matches the data the app collects; Apple requires links in the listing and app.
- Google Play testingNew personal developer accounts need a closed test before production release.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time involved?
The scope determines how much design, development and testing the app needs.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that request data.
Integrations
Maps, payment gateways, booking systems and devices such as scanners each need setup, testing and failure handling.
Screen design
Custom animation, additional languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building an app
Wrapping a website in an app shell
Plan useful app features. Apple expects more than a repackaged site, and a wrapper risks rejection.
Demanding sign-up immediately
Let people see value first where accounts are not central to the app. Apple's guidelines also address access without login.
Asking for notifications on first launch
Request permission when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until allowed.
Adding an analytics or advertising SDK without updating privacy answers: Include the SDK's data collection in Google Play's Data safety form.

Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to have an app developed?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers include the platform approach, the backend you already have and the depth of offline work. A native app uses separate codebases, while building a backend and admin panel from scratch adds substantial work. Offline editing and conflict handling also take more work than showing previously loaded data. We can discuss a quote once the scope is agreed.
How do I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that can explain how the app will be measured after release, as well as how it will be built. Ask about analytics and crash reporting in the first release. Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics or Sentry can show screen use and crashes; retention and the crash-free rate help you assess what happens after installation.
What is included in the app build?
The scope can include notification settings and account deletion flows as well as the main screens. For notifications, we set up a sending service, audience and timing rules, and controls for unwanted categories. If people can create accounts, Apple and Google Play require in-app deletion paths; Google Play also requires a web deletion-request link.
How do payments work in an app?
The checkout depends on what you sell. Apple requires in-app purchase for digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app, while physical goods and services used outside it need another payment route. Google Play requires its billing system for digital goods and subscriptions and excludes physical goods and services. We set up purchases and subscriptions for the stores.
Will I own the app code?
Yes. You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. We can also build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, so accounts and data live in one place. Tell us which parts of your existing setup need to use that data when we agree the scope.
What happens after the app launches?
Launch is followed by ongoing support, including bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Plan maintenance releases as part of the product's life: Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, and outdated apps can become unavailable to new users on newer devices.
