Choosing

Should you build a cross-platform or native app?

React Native is our usual choice for apps built around accounts, forms, lists, bookings, payments or content. It shares a codebase across iOS and Android while rendering each platform’s own interface components. Native modules are available when a particular feature needs them, and some logic can be shared with a React web app.

Native development fits a different brief. An app built around deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work may need Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. That gives you a closer fit for those features, with separate codebases to build and maintain. We discuss the features you need before choosing an approach.

A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool. It skips store review, although it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after a user adds it to the Home Screen. That limitation is worth checking against how your staff will use it.

Local

What HSR Layout businesses need from an app

HSR Layout has start-ups launching consumer and marketplace products. If that is your business, you need to reach both app stores and see whether people return after installing. Start with the main task a customer should complete, then use analytics to see where they come back or leave. A shared codebase gives the product coverage across both platforms.

The commercial area also gives shops and restaurants a reason to consider repeat ordering. If you serve regular customers, an app can put reordering, loyalty and saved payment details in one place, with a fast checkout and notifications sent at a useful moment. The ordering flow should be straightforward for someone coming back to make another purchase.

Rules

What an app project in India has to handle

Your checkout needs to match what you sell. UPI supports customer-to-merchant payments in India, so we plan where it fits in your checkout. For digital goods and subscriptions sold inside an app, we set up the relevant in-app purchases and Google Play billing; Google Play billing must not be used for physical goods or services. We agree the purchase flow before configuring it for the stores.

How it runs

How a mobile app project runs with us

We work remotely with clients through video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. You can review the work and give feedback as it progresses.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the main task you want people to complete in the app.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare a clickable prototype. Put it in front of a few customers or staff and bring their feedback to us; changing a screen before it is built costs less than changing it afterwards.

  3. 03

    Build and test

We share test builds for your own phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Use the app yourself and tell us where the experience needs work.

  4. 04

    Measure

We include analytics and crash reporting in the first release. You can see which screens people use, where they leave and which devices experience crashes.

  5. 05

    Launch

We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain access to the accounts used for publication.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring what you have, and we can discuss the gaps.

  • Developer accountsStart registering Apple and Google organisation accounts in your company’s name; business verification needs a D-U-N-S number.
  • Systems and accessList your website, booking software, CRM or payment provider, including available APIs and who holds admin access.
  • Privacy policyPrepare a policy that reflects the data the app collects; Apple requires a link in the listing and inside the app.
  • TestersCheck the closed-testing requirement if you have a new personal Google Play developer account.
  • Privacy answersList any analytics or advertising software planned for the app so its data collection is covered in Google Play’s Data safety form.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline

The scope determines how much design, development and testing the app needs.

  • User roles

Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.

  • Live features

Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.

  • Interface design

Custom animation, extra languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • Existing systems

A documented backend API reduces the work; building a backend and admin panel from scratch adds substantial scope.

Questions

Asked by businesses in HSR Layout

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price. The work changes with offline editing and syncing, integrations such as payment gateways, and whether you need a new backend and admin panel. A panel for staff to edit content, look up customers or issue refunds is part of the scope. Once the scope is agreed, we can prepare a quote.

How should you choose an app development company?

Choose a team that can discuss how people will use the app and how you will measure that use. Ask how it would handle access before sign-up: Apple expects apps without significant account-based features to allow use without login. Also ask how you will track returning users and drop-off in the main task.

What needs to be included if the app has accounts?

Include a way for people to start deleting their accounts inside the app. Apple requires this for apps that allow account creation, and deactivation alone is not enough. Google Play also requires an in-app deletion path for the account and associated data, plus a web link where people can request deletion.

Who owns the app and its accounts?

You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name too. Accounts or repositories held in an agency’s or freelancer’s name can make the app difficult to move later, even when the product itself is already in use.

What happens after the app launches?

Ongoing support covers bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can be delivered through an over-the-air update. Changes to native code, new permissions and Expo SDK upgrades still need a store release, so those changes follow the store release process.
