Choosing
Should you choose cross-platform or native development?
For an app centred on accounts, forms, lists, maps, bookings, payments or content, a cross-platform build is a practical option. We usually use React Native to share a codebase across iOS and Android, adding native modules when a feature needs them. You have one main codebase to maintain, while the screens use each platform’s own interface components.
Native development uses Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. It fits products that depend on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or access to new platform features at launch. The trade-off is two codebases to build and maintain. That choice affects the work after release as well as the initial build.
Start with the actions your users need to complete and the device features those actions depend on. A booking or content app has a different technical starting point from a product built around demanding background work. We can use that scope to choose the approach before screen design and development begin.
Local
What organisations in Northwest Territories need from an app
Yellowknife attracts international visitors in winter for aurora viewing. A visitor-facing business taking appointments needs booking, reminders and payment, along with a staff view of the day’s schedule. The app should make the booking steps clear to the customer and give staff a useful view of what has been arranged.
The Tłı̨chǫ region includes the Ekati and Diavik diamond mines. For a mine operator planning an app for inspection or maintenance work, field staff need forms, photos, signatures and location attached to each job, with records syncing to the office when signal returns.
Parks Canada manages areas in the territory. An organisation planning an app around content or customer accounts should also consider the staff-facing admin panel: someone needs a way to edit content and look up accounts without calling a developer.
Rules
What a mobile app project in Canada has to handle
PIPEDA sets federal rules for how private-sector organisations collect, use and disclose personal information in commercial activity. That affects the account and customer data you ask the app to hold. We build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, and agree with you what data those parts need to use. Bring a description of the information your users will provide and the purpose it serves, so it can be accounted for in the build.
How it runs
How a mobile app development project runs with us
We work remotely from India. The time difference with Canada varies by location and season, so we use video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board to keep decisions and feedback moving between conversations.
- 01
Agree the scope
You explain the actions the app needs to support and the people who will use it. We agree what belongs in the work before proceeding.
- 02
Design the screens
We prepare iOS and Android screen designs. You review them and give feedback before code is written.
- 03
Try the prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback gives us a chance to change screens before they are built.
- 04
Test on your phone
We provide test builds through TestFlight for iPhone and Google Play’s internal or closed testing tracks. You try the app in real use and share what needs attention.
- 05
Submit the app
We handle listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain access to those accounts for the release.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the details that shape the screens, integrations and store release.
- List the website, CRM, booking, ERP and payment systems the app must work with, including API availability and who holds admin access.
- Start registering Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
- Prepare a privacy policy that reflects what the app collects. Apple requires a link in the listing and inside the app.
- Decide if users need accounts. If they can create one, Apple also requires a way to start deleting it inside the app.
- Consider what staff need to edit or look up themselves after the app is in use.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time needed
The amount of design, backend and testing work changes with the scope.
Existing backend
A documented API reduces the work compared with building a backend and admin panel from scratch.
Offline editing
Showing last-loaded data without signal is modest work; creating and editing records offline also needs later syncing and conflict handling.
Screen design
Custom animation, several languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User-generated content
The build needs filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details when users can contribute content.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with mobile app development
Wrapping the website
Apple’s guidelines expect more than a repackaged site. Plan app functions that give people a reason to install it.
Asking for notifications immediately
Request permission when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user allows them.
Adding an SDK without updating privacy answers
Check what analytics or advertising tools collect and include third-party collection in Google Play’s Data safety form.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Northwest Territories
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The biggest drivers include the number of user roles, the systems the app must connect to, and the backend work required. Customer, driver and staff roles each need their own screens and permissions; integrations also need setup, testing and failure handling.
How should I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that can discuss the actual screens, data and release work with you. We give you direct access to the people designing and building your product, so you can raise a question about a flow or a technical choice with the people doing that work.
What is included in mobile app development?
The work includes app screens, a backend and store release. We also set up push notifications: that means a sending service, rules for who receives each message and when, and settings in the app so people can switch off categories they do not want.
Will I own the app and its accounts?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep the developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name too. Accounts held by an agency or freelancer can make the app harder to move if you change who maintains it.
What support does the app need after launch?
Plan for bug fixes, operating system updates and new features after release. Google Play requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out over the air, while native code changes and new permissions still need a store release.
How are payments handled in the app?
The checkout depends on what you sell. Apple requires in-app purchase for digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app; Google Play billing is required for digital goods and subscriptions, with some regional alternatives. Physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment method.
