Choosing
Which WordPress setup should you choose?
Start with how you want to edit. The WordPress block editor suits teams that need varied pages within a set of design rules. Custom blocks give editors those choices without adding a separate page builder. A custom theme with Advanced Custom Fields suits more structured content: your team fills in fields while the page layout stays fixed.
A page builder such as Elementor or Divi gives you drag-and-drop freedom. The trade-off is that pages can be heavier, editors can break layouts, and content can become tied to the builder. Think about who will maintain the site and how much control they need over each page.
A ready-made theme suits a small site with a modest brief. It is worth checking which features it includes before choosing it: unused features can still load, and deep changes to the theme can be harder than building a custom one. Your choice affects both the work involved and the flexibility your editors have afterwards.
Market
What buyers in the Netherlands expect from a site
Publishers, schools and associations need staff to be able to publish news, events and pages without asking a developer for help. We set up separate editing screens and fields for structured content such as events, so entries follow a consistent layout while your staff manage the details.
Language is a planning decision too. Dutch is the official language, while Dutch and Frisian are both official languages in Fryslân. If you intend to publish in several languages, tell us which content needs each version so we can plan the language setup as part of the build.
Rules
What your Netherlands WordPress project has to handle
Tracking cookies need explicit visitor consent. We set up a consent banner that asks before those cookies are placed, without pre-ticked boxes or a cookie wall. Functional and qualifying analytical cookies generally do not need consent, provided visitors are informed.
For commercial email, we set up the sign-up form to request consent and include an unsubscribe option in messages. The rules also allow an exception for existing customers receiving messages about related products or services.
For webshops covered by Dutch accessibility requirements, we build to WCAG 2.1 level AA and set up an easy-to-find, accessible accessibility statement. We include that work in the project scope before the shop is built.
How it runs
How a WordPress project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 4h30m ahead, or 3h30m during Central European Summer Time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that difference.
- 01
Plan the content
We identify the content types, fields and blocks your editors need. You show us what your team publishes and how it should be organised.
- 02
Build on staging
We work on a staging copy and check changes, plugin updates and content there before moving them to the live site. You can review the work away from your live pages.
- 03
Move existing content
When you have an old site, we move its content and set up redirects. You help identify the pages and content that need to make the move.
- 04
Hand over editing
We give your editors a walkthrough or short screen recordings on adding pages and using custom blocks, along with a note on settings to leave alone.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather these details so we can understand the work and involve the people who will use the site.
- Existing accessHave administrator access ready for your current WordPress site, hosting and domain.
- ConnectionsList your CRM, email marketing platform, booking system or payment gateway, and identify the account access needed.
- HostingConsider keeping your current host, moving to managed WordPress hosting or asking us for a recommendation based on traffic and support needs.
- EditorsIdentify who will test adding a page, a post and an image during the project.
- Current pluginsNote which plugins your team relies on and what each one does.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of WordPress development
The scope determines how much design, configuration, migration and testing work the project needs.
Theme
A theme built from a custom design takes more work than configuring an existing theme.
Editing tools
More custom blocks, post types and field groups add to the work needed to give editors the right controls.
Migration
The source and amount of content affect the move. Another WordPress site is simpler to move than a different CMS or a site that needs a page builder untangled.
Traffic and security
High traffic, strict uptime targets or security reviews add hosting, caching and hardening work.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with WordPress development
Using pirated themes or plugins
They can contain hidden malware and will not receive security updates. Use properly maintained software instead.
Skipping updates
Outdated plugins are a frequent route into hacked sites. Test updates on staging before applying them to the live site.
Giving everyone administrator access
Give editors and authors lower roles to limit the damage if a login is stolen.
Updating without a backup
Back up both the files and database first, so you have a copy to restore if an update breaks something.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Netherlands
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a WordPress developer?
There is no fixed price. An online shop, memberships and several languages each add major plugins, configuration and testing to the scope. Tell us which of these your site needs and we will send you a free quote once the scope is agreed.
Is WordPress still a practical choice for a business site?
Yes. WordPress suits businesses that want to manage content and an online shop in the same admin area, using WooCommerce. It also suits membership organisations and course providers that need logins, members-only content and payments through established plugins.
What is included in the development work?
We select maintained plugins with a clear purpose and harden the site’s security. That includes limited administrator accounts, strong passwords with two-factor login, a firewall, current software and backups stored away from the web server. Each plugin adds code that needs updating and a possible security weakness.
Who owns the site after launch?
You own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in. Keep the top administrator account, hosting and domain in your business’s name, and remove access for staff or contractors who leave. That gives your business control of the accounts needed to manage the site.
Can you support the site after launch?
Yes. Our care plan covers updates, backups and monitoring after launch. WordPress applies minor maintenance and security releases automatically on most sites by default, but plugin and theme updates usually still need someone to apply and check them. The care plan covers that ongoing work.
Should I use managed WordPress hosting?
Managed hosting suits you if you want the host to handle server caching, backups and WordPress core updates. Basic shared hosting costs less, but is often slower and leaves more upkeep to you. Choose based on the support you want and who will take responsibility for the server.
