Choosing
Which e-commerce platform should you choose?
Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. You add features through apps, so check their recurring subscriptions when comparing the ongoing work of running the store. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan. It is a practical choice when your priority is a store your team can manage without taking responsibility for the hosting environment.
WooCommerce fits an existing WordPress site or a business with substantial content. It gives you control over code, data and hosting, with the responsibility for updates, security and plugin compatibility. A headless storefront such as Next.js fits an unusual catalogue, a product configurator or a content-led brand. That flexibility takes more build effort, and later changes will usually need a developer.
We recommend an option after learning about your products and operations. Bring the checkout changes and catalogue features you need to that discussion, along with who will maintain the store afterwards. The choice should fit the work your team wants to take on.
Market
What shoppers in the Netherlands expect
Your checkout can offer iDEAL | Wero, which lets shoppers pay through their own bank. We select a suitable gateway and configure the available methods alongside your other payment choices. Your business registration and selling currencies affect that choice, as do settlement timing and the way refunds and disputes are handled.
The store also needs to fit how you sell. A retailer with a physical shop might need stock synced with its till and a collection option. A wholesaler may need customer-specific prices, minimum quantities or quote requests. A growing direct-to-consumer brand might need reviews, subscriptions and email flows.
Rules
What a Dutch e-commerce project needs to handle
Tracking cookies need explicit visitor consent. We set up a consent banner without pre-ticked boxes or a cookie wall, and make sure visitors are informed about functional and eligible analytical cookies. Plan the tracking tools alongside that consent choice.
Dutch consumer stores need to show the business trade name, address, KVK number and btw-id clearly. We give those details a clear place in the store and provide the cooling-off information alongside the buying policies.
Customers also need an easy-to-find digital withdrawal button throughout the cooling-off period. We set up a cancellation route that stays available during that period and does not require the customer to create an account.
How it runs
How an e-commerce project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 4h30m ahead, or 3h30m ahead during Central European Summer Time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. The shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across that difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals. You walk us through how you sell, and we agree the store scope together before design begins.
- 02
Design
We prepare product, collection and checkout page designs for desktop and mobile. You review them and give feedback before any code is written.
- 03
Organise the catalogue
We decide with you how products group into collections, which attributes become filters and which choices need their own price, SKU, stock or image.
- 04
Test
You place test orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases. Check the stock, emails and order details in the admin for each case.
- 05
Launch and care
We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, then provide ongoing support. You have a working store and a way to review its activity after launch.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
These materials help you make store decisions with the details in front of you.
- A product spreadsheet with descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, stock and categories.
- Product weights and package sizes, so delivery charges reflect what you send.
- Original product photos, with consistent backgrounds and an image for each colour.
- Plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies.
- Registration, bank and identity documents for a gateway account in your business name. Apply early; the provider decides on approval.
- Business-held logins for your domain, DNS, current site, email, analytics and Google accounts.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timing of development
The scope of the work determines the effort involved in building and preparing your store.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet is ready to import; information scattered across supplier PDFs, an old store and photo threads needs preparation.
Design
Adapting an existing theme is smaller work than creating a custom design around unusual products or a distinct brand.
Migration
Moving products alone has a different scope from moving customers, order history, reviews and gift cards. Existing customer passwords usually need a reset.
Integrations
An order export to accounting is smaller than syncing stock and prices in both directions with an ERP or marketplaces.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with your store
Testing only in a sandbox
Place a real low-value order on live payment settings and refund it. This checks the live currency, order emails and webhooks.
Sending store emails without authentication
Set up SPF or DKIM on the sending domain to reduce the risk of order emails landing in spam.
Adding an app for every feature
Review what each app or plugin does and remove unused ones. Extra scripts and recurring fees add up, and plugins can conflict.
Overloading product pages
Compress images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where needed, so those pages carry less unnecessary weight.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Netherlands
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does an e-commerce website cost to develop?
There is no fixed price. The scope depends on features such as customer-specific pricing, the currencies and tax setup for each market, and product choices that need uploads or special price rules. We send you a free quote once the scope is agreed, so you can see what the proposed work covers.
Can you move our existing store to a new platform?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. We also map old product and category addresses to their closest new pages using permanent redirects. That includes deciding where an address should lead when the original product has been dropped from the new catalogue.
Which payment gateways do you support?
We support Stripe, Razorpay, PayPal and local gateways, with availability depending on your country and platform. Gateway setup includes checking paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders. For each outcome, we check that the order record, stock level and customer email update correctly, so the admin reflects what happened at checkout.
Do you set up order emails and product-page search data?
Yes. We set up transactional emails for order confirmation, dispatch, refunds, abandoned carts and password resets. Their wording needs to match your actual policies, and the sender should use your store's domain. We also build product pages with structured data so they are eligible for rich results in search.
Who owns the store, and what should we maintain after launch?
You own your domain, content and code. That keeps you free to work with another team. After launch, retest the full checkout whenever an app, plugin or theme changes, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need. Track checkout drop-off and product-page speed against your earlier figures.
Should we sell through a marketplace as well as our own store?
That depends on how you want to reach and serve customers. A marketplace brings ready traffic, but sets its own rules and keeps the customer relationship. Your own store retains customer data and margin, while you take responsibility for attracting visitors. Some brands use both and sync stock between them.
