Choosing
Should you choose WordPress, custom code or a website builder?
WordPress suits a team that publishes often and wants to edit most of the site itself. Its plugins offer a wide choice of features, but someone needs to keep them and the platform updated for security. Before choosing it, decide who will look after those updates alongside the content.
A custom-coded site in Next.js suits a company that wants fast pages, tight security and a design without template limits. Your team needs to be comfortable asking a developer for structural changes. The choice is about how you expect to work with the site after launch as well as what you want it to look like.
A hosted builder such as Wix, Squarespace or Webflow suits a small site you want to run alone. You trade away some control over code and speed, and moving to another platform later can mean rebuilding the site. We recommend WordPress or Next.js after understanding how your team works and who will make changes.
Local
What Waterloo organisations need from a website
Waterloo has significant insurance and high-tech sectors. For a high-tech startup, the site needs a plain explanation of the product and a clear route to join a waitlist or book a demo. Visitors should be able to understand the offer before deciding what to do next.
Waterloo’s employers include insurers Sun Life Financial and Manulife Financial. A service-led organisation needs to decide where enquiries go, who receives them and what the confirmation says; a mobile visitor also needs a clear route to call or use WhatsApp if those are offered.
The University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University are based in the city. An organisation serving prospective students and other audiences needs page structures that help each visitor find the relevant information, with desktop and mobile designs shaped around those needs.
Rules
What a website project in Canada has to handle
For Ontario businesses and non-profits with 50 or more employees, public websites and qualifying web content must meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA, with exceptions for live captions and pre-recorded audio descriptions. We agree an accessibility target in the brief and build the pages against it, so the target is part of the work from the start.
If you send commercial electronic messages, Canada’s anti-spam rules affect the sign-up flow and the messages themselves. We set up consent on the form and include the sender’s current mailing address and an unsubscribe mechanism in the messages.
How it runs
How a website project runs with us
We are a studio in India working remotely with you through video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India time is ahead of Canada; Eastern Time moves one hour closer during daylight saving time. The shared board gives both sides a place to keep feedback and project work visible across the difference.
- 01
Discover
You explain who buys from you, why they choose you and what visitors should do. We use those answers to shape the sitemap.
- 02
Plan the pages
We make wireframes before visual designs. You review what belongs on each page and its order, leaving colours for the design stage.
- 03
Build
We develop the site in code or with a CMS your team can edit, then test it on real devices and browsers.
- 04
Check
You proofread each page, submit every form and confirm who receives the messages before the site goes live.
- 05
Launch and care
We set up the domain, email, analytics and Search Console, walk your team through the site and provide ongoing support.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
A few practical details will help shape the brief.
- Your main goal, such as calls or quote requests, and who handles each enquiry.
- A ranked list of the services or products you want to feature.
- A folder of case studies, testimonials and client logos you have permission to show.
- Account details for your domain, hosting, email and analytics, or the name of the person who holds them.
- Sites you like and dislike, with a short reason for each choice.
- Vector logo files, brand colours and fonts, or a note that they still need creating.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The scope determines how much design, build and checking work the project needs.
Page templates
Distinct layouts take more design and build work than pages that share a template.
Content migration
Moving news archives, blog posts and downloadable files adds transfer and checking work.
Brand readiness
An existing logo and style guide reduce design work compared with deciding colours, typefaces and a logo during the project.
Content readiness
Copy and photos supplied ready to publish keep the scope smaller; adding copywriting, photography or translation makes it bigger.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Waterloo
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to have a website built?
There is no fixed price. The scope depends on the page designs, the content editor your team needs and whether a custom design or an adapted template fits the brief. An adapted template can suit a simpler site when it is reworked around your real content. Once the scope is agreed, ask us for a quote.
Is website development still worth it?
It is worth assessing against what you need visitors to do. You can track form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions in analytics, then check which pages those enquiries started from. Also decide who will update news, projects and job posts after launch, so the site remains useful to visitors.
What does your website design and development service include?
We cover the site from page planning through development and handover. We build in Next.js or WordPress, set up the domain, email, analytics and Search Console, and give your team a walkthrough. Search preparation includes page titles, descriptions, a clear heading structure, an XML sitemap and structured data.
Will I own the website?
Yes. You own the domain, content and code. Keep the domain and hosting accounts in your business’s name and grant access to the people working on the site. That keeps the accounts under your control when you need someone else to make changes.
Can you use our existing brand and website content?
Yes. We build on your existing logo, colours and fonts, and prepare brand assets for the web where needed. Bring real headings and paragraphs into the design work early: placeholder text can conceal layout problems when the final copy turns out to be a different length.
