Choosing

Should you choose WordPress or a custom website?

Start with editing. WordPress suits a team that publishes frequently and wants to change most of the site itself. Its plugin selection gives you options for extending the site, though someone needs to keep WordPress and its plugins updated for security. Decide who will take that responsibility before choosing the platform.

A custom-coded site in Next.js suits a company that wants fast pages, tight security and a design without template limits. It gives you more control over the design, but structural changes are generally work for a developer. A custom design is useful when your content, brand or audience has specific needs; an adapted template fits a simpler brief when it is reworked around your real content.

We recommend WordPress or Next.js after learning how your team works. Tell us who publishes updates, how often pages change and what you want to manage yourselves. That gives us a practical basis for discussing the editing work and design flexibility each option leaves with you.

Local

What Canberra organisations need from a website

Public administration is a major part of Canberra’s economy. For a public sector organisation, a sitemap and desktop and mobile page designs give the project a clear structure to review before development starts. Wireframes help establish what belongs on each page.

Health care and professional services are major employment sectors. A local practice needs service pages, practitioner profiles, opening hours and a booking or call option that works on a phone. A law, accounting or consulting firm needs service and partner pages where prospective clients can check expertise before making contact.

Canberra also has a cyber security sector supported by an innovation node. A product startup in that sector needs a plain explanation of its product and a route to join a waitlist or book a demo.

Rules

What an Australian website project needs to handle

Australian guidance recommends WCAG 2.2 at a minimum of Level AA for digital goods and services. We agree an accessibility target with you in the brief and set that target for the page designs and build. Agree it early so it is part of the work you review.

From 10 December 2026, covered organisations using personal information in certain significant automated decisions must disclose the kinds of information and decisions in their privacy policy. If that applies to your site, we set up a privacy policy page for those disclosures.

How it runs

How a website project runs with us

We work remotely from India using video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 4h30m behind Canberra, or 5h30m behind during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that time difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

Tell us who buys from you, why they choose you and what visitors should do on the site. We use those answers to shape the sitemap.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare wireframes before visual designs. You review the content and its order first, then give feedback on the desktop and mobile designs.

  3. 03

    Build

We develop the site in clean code or a content management system your team can edit, then test it on real devices and browsers.

  4. 04

    Check

You proofread every page, submit each form and confirm who receives the messages. This catches small errors before visitors encounter them.

  5. 05

    Launch

We set up your domain, email, analytics and Search Console, then walk your team through the handover.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Gather these materials so we can discuss the site using your real content and priorities.

  • Brand filesYour logo in SVG, AI or EPS, plus colours and fonts, or a note that they still need creating.
  • PrioritiesA ranked list of the services or products you want to feature.
  • ExamplesSites you like and dislike, with a brief reason for each choice.
  • AccessLogin details for your domain, hosting, email and measurement tools, or the name of the person who holds them.
  • PhotosImages of your team, premises and finished work; arrange a shoot ahead if needed.
  • ProofCase studies, permitted client logos, testimonials, certifications and memberships in a shared folder.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline

The scope determines how much design, development and checking the project needs.

  • Page templates

Distinct layouts take more design and build work than pages that share a template.

  • Features

Booking, calculators, member logins, multiple languages and CRM connections add design, build and testing work.

  • Content preparation

Copy and photos ready to publish keep the scope smaller; copywriting, photography or translation add work.

  • Migration

Moving blog posts, news archives and downloadable files from an old site adds transfer and checking work.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid when building your site

  • Designing with placeholder copy

Bring real headings and paragraphs into the layouts early, so their length does not disrupt finished designs.

  • Putting accounts in an agency’s name

Hold your domain and hosting accounts as the business, then grant the people building the site access.

  • Copying every old page

Review which service pages visitors need and which your team will keep current before settling the sitemap.

  • Leaving search setup until launch

Check page titles, the sitemap and any development indexing block before the site goes live.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Canberra

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to have a website built?

There is no fixed price. The work depends on the features and content in scope, as well as the setup: a custom front end with a separate editor gives you heavy editing capability but has more moving parts to host and maintain. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.

Is investing in web development still worthwhile?

It is worth assessing against what you need the site to do. For an enquiry-led business, track form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions in analytics, then check which pages visitors started from. That gives you a practical way to review the site after launch.

Can you work with our existing brand?

Yes. We build on your existing logo, colours and fonts and prepare brand assets for the web where needed. Bring the files you have and tell us which parts of the brand are settled, so the page design can use them consistently across desktop and mobile.

How will enquiries reach the right person?

We set up contact and quote forms to send messages to the right inbox. During the build, agree who receives each type of request and what the confirmation says. You can also decide whether visitors see WhatsApp or click-to-call buttons on mobile.

Will we own the website?

Yes. You own the domain, content and code, with no lock-in. That gives your business control over its website assets after handover, so you can decide how the site is managed and who works on it as your needs change.

Who updates the site after launch?

Your team can manage content through an editor for pages, news, projects and careers without training. Agree who will take responsibility for those updates after launch. Keeping posts current helps visitors see that the information on the site reflects your business.
