Choosing

Should you customise a theme or build your own?

An existing theme is a practical choice when its layouts suit your catalogue. Customising it keeps the initial setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you a design around your brand and room for unusual products, though later layout changes need development work. Your choice affects both the first build and how you make changes afterwards.

For a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow, a headless storefront built with Hydrogen or Next.js is another option. It gives you more freedom over the storefront, but you give up Shopify’s theme editor. Apps that add features through a theme might also stop working. Check those trade-offs before choosing this route, especially if your staff expect to edit the storefront themselves.

Selling in several countries adds another decision. A single store can use markets for local-currency prices, translations and international domains. Separate stores suit you when each country needs its own catalogue or team, or when payouts need to be in different currencies. Consider who will manage each catalogue as well as what customers will see.

Local

What Canberra businesses need from a store

Canberra has retail, health care, accommodation and food businesses among its major employment sectors. A retailer with a physical shop may need its online and in-store stock in one system; Shopify’s point-of-sale app works alongside the online store for that purpose. For a catalogue with changing ranges, automated collections can group products by conditions such as product type or tag, provided those fields are kept consistent.

Public administration and safety is another major sector in Canberra. An organisation selling goods online can use product metafields for details such as dimensions, care instructions and size charts, then show those details in their own sections on the product page. That gives staff structured fields to maintain instead of leaving every detail embedded in a description.

Rules

What an Australian Shopify store has to handle

Australian GST applies to most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. We configure the store’s tax settings for your market as part of setup, alongside shipping and payments.

Australian consumer guarantees cannot be overridden by a store policy or warranty. We set up your store policy pages with that constraint in mind, so the wording you provide does not claim to override those guarantees.

Commercial email and text messages require the customer’s permission, and unsubscribe requests must be actioned. We set up the consent and unsubscribe parts of the store’s marketing flow around those requirements.

How it runs

How a Shopify project runs with us

We work remotely with you from India. IST is 4h30m behind Canberra, changing to 5h30m during daylight saving time. Video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board give us ways to discuss decisions and keep work visible across that difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the store scope with you. You help us decide what the project needs to cover.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback before we write the theme code.

  3. 03

    Access

The store stays in your account. You approve our collaborator account and choose its permissions; you can remove that access when you need to.

  4. 04

    Build and review

Theme changes happen on an unpublished copy. You preview and approve it before publication, while your live store keeps trading.

  5. 05

    Launch

We connect the domain, remove the password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Gather these details so we can discuss the store’s scope with you.

  • A Shopify account and plan in your business’s name, with its own billing.
  • A product sheet with titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock by location.
  • Consistent product photos, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
  • A list of your current and planned apps and tools, with what each needs to do.
  • For a migration, exports of products, customers and orders, plus the URLs bringing the most traffic and sales.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and work involved

The scope determines how much design, development and testing the store needs.

  • Theme route

Adjusting an existing theme is smaller work than designing and building a custom theme around your brand.

  • Migration depth

Products alone are lighter to move than a store that also needs customer records, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects.

  • Connections and markets

System integrations, especially two-way stock and price sync, add work. Extra markets can also bring their own prices, translations and shipping rates.

  • Custom logic

Bespoke rules need development and testing. Custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs also require Shopify Plus.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development

  • Using an app for every small need

Apps can add page scripts and subscriptions. Check the theme files for leftover code when removing one.

  • Leaving product fields inconsistent

Automated collections and filters read tags, product types and vendors. Keep those fields consistent so products appear in the right places.

  • Migrating without redirects

Map old URLs to their new destinations and import the map at launch. Redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.

  • Editing the live theme

A mistake is visible to visitors immediately. Duplicate the theme, change the copy and preview it before publishing.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Canberra

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?

There is no fixed price: the scope drives the work. A custom theme, a migration of products, customers and orders, and connections to tools such as accounting or subscriptions each add different design, build or testing requirements. We need to agree what your store needs before defining that scope.

Can I hire you to build a Shopify store?

Yes. We design a custom theme around your brand and build it for mobile speed. We also connect and test integrations for reviews, subscriptions, ERP, accounting and WhatsApp. Tell us which of those tools you use and what the store needs to do.

Should I use Shopify Payments or another gateway?

Compare the total cost per order across the gateways available to your business. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even when Shopify Payments is also active. That comparison is especially useful when Shopify Payments is unavailable to your business.

How much can I change the Shopify checkout?

Shopify runs the checkout, and the changes available depend on your plan. Standard checkout customisation works from the Basic plan up. Apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus, so raise those requirements when agreeing the scope.

Will I own the store after it is built?

You own your domain, content and code. That means the store is not locked to the team that built it, and you retain those assets if you decide to work with someone else. Keep ownership in mind when arranging access for anyone working on your store.

What support is available after launch?

Ongoing support follows launch from the same people who designed and built the store. Your staff can also review installed apps, staff accounts and collaborator access periodically, removing anything no longer used. Shopify expires collaborator access that goes unused.
