Choosing
Which platform should you choose?
Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. You can add features through apps, although their subscriptions add to the running work and cost of the store. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan. It is a practical choice when straightforward day-to-day management is high on your list.
WooCommerce suits a business already using WordPress, especially one with plenty of content and an owner who wants control over code, data and hosting. That control brings responsibilities: someone must look after hosting, updates, security and compatibility between plugins. Decide who will do that work before choosing it.
A headless storefront, such as Next.js connected to a commerce back end, fits unusual catalogues, product configurators or content-led brands. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. We recommend a platform after learning about your products and operations, so the choice reflects how you fulfil orders as well as how the shop looks.
Local
What Canberra businesses need from an online store
Retail is among Canberra's major employment sectors. If you run a physical shop and want to sell online, your store needs stock connected to the shop's till system and a clear way for customers to choose click and collect. A business taking orders through social media or messages may instead need a product catalogue, online payment and order tracking to replace the manual work in chat.
Public administration is a major local industry. An organisation selling configurable or made-to-order products can need more than a simple product variant: file uploads, previews or price rules may be part of the order. For a direct-to-consumer brand growing into new markets, the work can include faster product pages, subscriptions, reviews and email flows.
Rules
What an e-commerce project in Australia has to handle
Australian Consumer Law applies to businesses selling goods and services in Australia, and store policies cannot override consumer guarantees. We set up returns and refund pages using the policies you provide, with those consumer rights reflected in the wording shoppers see before buying.
Commercial emails and texts need the customer's permission, and unsubscribe requests must be acted on. We set up a clear permission choice for marketing messages and an unsubscribe route in the email connection. Keep that choice distinct from the messages needed to fulfil an order.
How it runs
How an e-commerce project runs with us
We work remotely from India using video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 4h30m behind Canberra, or 5h30m behind during daylight saving time. Shared boards keep decisions and feedback visible as work moves between us.

Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
A store needs product information, payment and delivery settings, and policy pages. Gather these items before we talk.
- Product photosKeep original high-resolution files, with consistent backgrounds and an image for each colour variant.
- PoliciesPrepare plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies.
- Payment documentsGather registration, bank and identity details; open the gateway account in your business's name.
- Tax and delivery decisionsCheck tax treatment with your accountant and decide your couriers, areas and delivery charges.
- Account accessGather domain, DNS, website, email, analytics and Google logins held in your business's name.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timing of your store build
A store can use Shopify, WooCommerce or a headless storefront; the work involved depends on the choices within your scope.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet is ready to import; information scattered across supplier PDFs and chat photos needs preparation first.
Design
Adapting an existing theme takes less work than creating a custom design for unusual products or a distinct brand.
Migration
Moving reviews, gift cards and redirects adds scope beyond moving products. Existing customers usually need a password reset email.
Custom rules and markets
Wholesale price tiers, delivery date pickers and extra markets with their own currency, language and tax settings add build work.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building your store
Testing only in sandbox mode
Place a real low-value order using live payment settings and refund it, so you can catch currency, webhook and email errors.
Sending emails without domain authentication
Set up SPF or DKIM for the sending domain to reduce the risk of order messages landing in spam.
Showing charges too late
Put delivery and tax estimates on product or cart pages so shoppers can see them before the final checkout step.
Overloading product pages
Compress images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where they are needed.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Canberra
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does an e-commerce website cost to develop?
There is no fixed price for every store. The size of your catalogue and the complexity of its products are major drivers: bundles, engraving options and goods sold by weight or length need different setup from straightforward variants. Once we agree the scope, we can prepare a quote.
Should I sell on a marketplace as well as my own store?
Using both is an option, with stock synced between them. A marketplace brings ready traffic but sets the rules and keeps the customer relationship. Your own store keeps customer data and margin, while you take responsibility for attracting visitors to it.
Can you move my existing store to a new platform?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Map each old product and category URL to its closest new page, including pages for dropped products, and set up server-side permanent redirects as part of the move.
What is included in payment and order setup?
We configure and test the payment flow and its order records. Gateway choice depends on where your business is registered and the currencies you sell in. For paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders, we check that the order record, stock level and customer email update correctly.
Will I own my store after it is built?
Yes. You own your domain, content and code, so your store is not locked to the team that built it. That gives you control of those assets if you decide to change who works on the store later. Keep ownership clear when agreeing the work.
What should I check after the store launches?
Measure the store against its earlier figures and keep testing the checkout. Useful measures include conversion rate, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed. Retest after every app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.
