Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build one from scratch?
Customising an existing theme keeps the initial work lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you more freedom when your products need an unusual layout or your brand needs a distinct presentation. The trade-off comes later: layout changes to a custom theme need development work, so consider how often your team expects to change the storefront.
You also have a choice between apps and custom work. Apps add features quickly, but recurring fees, extra scripts and dependence on the app maker come with them. Custom code or a custom app fits a specific requirement more closely, although it needs maintenance as Shopify changes. Write down what the feature must do before choosing either route.
For selling across borders, one store can serve several markets with local-currency pricing, translations and international domains. Separate stores suit you if each country needs a different catalogue or team, or if you need payouts in different currencies. That decision affects how you organise the catalogue and run the operation.
Market
What might buyers in the Netherlands expect?
A payment choice worth planning for is iDEAL | Wero, which lets shoppers pay directly through their own bank. We configure payments for the market, so tell us which methods you intend to offer when we agree the store setup.
Your requirements also depend on how you sell. A first-time online seller may want staff to run the store without managing hosting or software updates. A direct-to-consumer brand may need subscriptions and reviews connected to store data. If you sell into several countries, translated content, local-currency prices and market-specific shipping need a place in the plan.
Rules
What a Shopify store in the Netherlands needs to handle
Tracking cookies need explicit visitor consent. We set up a consent banner without pre-ticked boxes or a cookie wall, and account for informed visitors when using functional or qualifying analytical cookies.
Your storefront needs to show your trade name, address, Chamber of Commerce number and VAT identification number, and give customers the required cooling-off period. We set up the relevant information pages and a clear withdrawal button that stays available during that period and lets customers cancel without creating an account.
Commercial email and text messages generally require prior consent, with an exception for messages to existing customers about related products or services. We account for consent in the sign-up flow and an unsubscribe option in each message.
How it runs
How a Shopify development project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 4h30m ahead of the Netherlands, or 3h30m during Central European Summer Time. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals. You help us agree the store scope before design starts.
- 02
Design
We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback before we write theme code.
- 03
Build and review
We work on an unpublished theme copy. You preview and approve the changes before publication, while the live store continues trading.
- 04
Test
We test on real devices and browsers. We also prepare domain, email, analytics and search setup as part of launch and care.
- 05
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We place a real test order and refund it.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring what you have so we can establish the scope and identify gaps in the store setup.
- Your Shopify account and planPut these in your business name and billing so the store, data and subscriptions belong to you.
- A product sheetInclude titles, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock per location. Weights affect calculated shipping rates.
- Product assetsGather consistent photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- Your toolsList current or planned apps for reviews, email marketing, subscriptions, accounting and couriers, with what each must do.
- Migration materialBring product, customer and order exports, plus the URLs that bring the most traffic and sales.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time for Shopify development
The scope determines the design, configuration and testing work involved.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme takes less work than designing and building a custom one.
Catalogue structure
Bundles, made-to-order choices and products needing extra options add setup and theme work.
Custom logic
Specific business rules add development and testing. Custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs also need Shopify Plus.
Integrations and markets
Two-way stock or price synchronisation needs more work, as do additional markets with their own pricing, translations and shipping rates.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Missing redirects
Shopify product and collection paths change during a migration. Prepare an old-to-new URL map for launch; redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Too many apps
Extra apps add subscriptions and scripts. Check the theme files when removing an app, as code can remain behind.
Editing the live theme
Visitors see mistakes immediately. Duplicate the theme, make changes on the copy and preview them before publishing.
Inconsistent product data
Loose tags, product types and vendors put items in the wrong collections or hide them from filters. Make those fields consistent.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Netherlands
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
The cost depends on the scope. A brand-specific theme, connected apps and the structure of your catalogue all affect the work. For example, metafields hold details such as dimensions or care instructions so the theme can show them in their own section, instead of placing everything in the product description.
Can I hire you to build a Shopify store for my business?
Yes. We design a custom theme around your brand, build it for mobile speed and connect and test integrations such as reviews, subscriptions and accounting. We also build for search from launch, with clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages. You can discuss the features you need before agreeing the scope.
Can you move my existing store to Shopify?
Yes. We move products, customers and orders from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform, with redirects in place. The new store also gets clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages from launch. Share your existing platform and the records you want moved when discussing the project.
Can you customise checkout and connect a payment gateway?
Shopify runs checkout itself. Standard checkout customisation is available from the Basic plan up, while apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus. A third-party payment gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, so compare the total cost per order when choosing a gateway.
Will I own my Shopify store and control access?
Yes. The store stays in your account, and you own your domain, content and code without being locked to the team that built it. We work through a collaborator account that you approve. You choose its permissions and can remove that access whenever you need to.
What support is available after launch?
Launch is followed by ongoing support from the people who designed and built your store. For your own review, Shopify reports show conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers; Search Console shows organic clicks and product-page indexing. Review unused apps, staff accounts and collaborator access as well.
