Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build a custom storefront?
An existing theme is a practical starting point when its layouts suit your products. Customising it keeps the initial setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you more room to reflect your brand and present unusual products, but later layout changes need development work.
A headless storefront using Hydrogen or Next.js suits a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow. The trade-off is that you give up the Shopify theme editor, and apps that add features through a theme may not work with that storefront. Consider who will need to change pages after launch before choosing this route.
Your payment gateway is a separate choice. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even if Shopify Payments is also active. If Shopify Payments is unavailable to your business, compare the total cost per order across gateways. Our design, development and launch work is handled by the same team, so we can discuss these choices with you as part of the store build.
Local
What Edmonton businesses need from a Shopify store
Edmonton is an economic centre for the oil and gas industry. If you supply that industry, your catalogue may need clear specifications for each product. We can use metafields for details such as dimensions and display them in their own section on the product page.
Retailers in Edmonton, home to West Edmonton Mall, may want online and in-store stock in one system. Shopify’s point-of-sale app works alongside the online store. Automated collections can also keep product groups current, provided your product tags, types and other fields are consistent.
Edmonton research initiatives involve the University of Alberta and Alberta Innovates. If your organisation sells products from its research work, a store can give customers product details and support sales into several countries with local-currency prices, translated content and market-specific shipping.
Rules
What a Shopify store in Canada has to handle
The tax charged can depend on where a sale is considered to be made, such as the delivery province or territory. We configure the store’s tax and shipping settings for your market, using the delivery and tax details you provide.
For commercial emails, consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe mechanism need to be part of the setup. We set up the consent and unsubscribe flow and include your current mailing address in the sender details. If you publish commercial content for Quebec, we also plan for the required French content in the storefront.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 11h30m ahead of Alberta, so you can leave feedback and decisions on the board for us to pick up across the time difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals. You help us agree what belongs in the store’s scope before the design work starts.
- 02
Design
We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback, which we use to refine the pages before writing theme code.
- 03
Build
The store stays in your account. You approve our collaborator access, choose its permissions and can remove that access at any time.
- 04
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.
- 05
Handover
Your team learns to manage orders, products and discounts, so those everyday tasks do not depend on a developer.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the details you have available so we can discuss the store and its scope.
- A Shopify account and plan in your business’s name and billing.
- A product sheet with titles, prices, SKUs, weights, options and stock by location. Weights affect calculated shipping rates.
- Consistent product photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, plus reviewed shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies.
- For a migration, exports of products, customers and orders, plus the existing URLs bringing the most traffic and sales.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of Shopify development
The work involved depends on the store’s design, catalogue and connections.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme takes less work than designing and building a custom theme around your brand.
Catalogue structure
Bundles, made-to-order choices and specifications displayed through metafields add setup and theme work.
Integrations and markets
Stock and price sync with other systems, plus market-specific prices, translations and shipping rates, add connection and testing work.
Business logic
Custom rules need development and testing. Public apps with Functions work on any plan; custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs need Shopify Plus.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Missing redirects
Map old product and collection URLs to their new destinations and import the map at launch. Redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
An app for every small need
Review what each app adds before installing it. Apps can add subscriptions and scripts; check theme files for leftover code when removing one.
Changes on the live theme
Duplicate the theme, make changes on the copy and preview it before publishing, so mistakes do not appear immediately to visitors.
Loose product data
Keep tags, product types and vendors consistent so automated collections and storefront filters put products in the right place.

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers include the theme design, the work needed to migrate an existing store and product choices that need extra fields or an app. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed, so you can see what the proposed work covers.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. You can hire us to build a store and speak directly to the people designing and developing it. That works for a first-time online seller who wants staff to run the shop without managing hosting, security or software updates themselves.
Can you change the Shopify checkout?
Some checkout changes are available, but Shopify runs the checkout itself. Standard checkout customisation works from the Basic plan up. Apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus, so describe the checkout changes you need before selecting a plan.
Should I use one store or separate stores for different countries?
One store can target several countries through markets, with local-currency pricing, translations and international domains. Separate stores suit you when countries need different catalogues or different teams, or when you need payouts in different currencies. Start by listing those operational differences before choosing the structure.
Will I own my store after it is built?
You own your domain, content and code. That means you are not locked to the team that built the store and can choose who works on it later. Keep ownership details available to the people responsible for your business’s website and content.
What support is available after launch?
We provide ongoing support from the people who designed and built your store. After launch, review apps, staff accounts and collaborator access periodically, removing access you no longer use. You can also use Shopify reports to track returning customers and Search Console to check product-page indexing.
