Choosing

Should you customise a theme or build your own?

Start with an existing theme when its layouts suit your catalogue and the changes you need are limited. Customising it keeps setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you more room for unusual products and a distinct brand, though later layout changes need development work. We look at the pages and product choices you need before settling on the approach.

Features need a similar decision. Apps are a quick way to add functions, but they can bring recurring fees, extra scripts and dependence on their makers. Custom code or a custom app fits a specific requirement, with maintenance needed as Shopify changes. List what each feature must do before choosing it; that makes the ongoing work easier to see.

For a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow, a headless storefront built with Hydrogen or Next.js is another option. You give up the theme editor, and apps that add features through the theme may not work with it. For selling across countries, markets within one store support local currencies, translations and international domains; separate stores suit different catalogues, teams or payout currencies.

Market

What do shoppers in Canada need from your store?

Your store setup starts with how you sell. A retailer with physical shops may need online and in-store stock managed together through Shopify's point-of-sale app. A direct-to-consumer brand may need subscriptions, reviews and email flows connected to store data. We use those requirements to shape the store and its connections before choosing individual tools.

For shoppers in Quebec, commercial website publications must be available in French, so we plan French content for the relevant store pages. Payment choices also need an early check: Interac offers debit payments and e-Transfer, and we check the chosen gateway against the payment methods you want before setting up the store.

Rules

What must a Shopify project in Canada handle?

Tax settings need to reflect where a sale is considered to be made, such as the province or territory where goods are delivered. In Quebec, QST is charged alongside GST and calculated on the amount before GST. We configure the store's tax settings for your market and check them against the places you sell to.

If you send commercial electronic messages, consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe mechanism affect the sign-up and email setup. We plan the consent wording and connect the email tools around those requirements, including a current mailing address in messages and a way to handle unsubscribe requests.

How it runs

How a Shopify development project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. In winter, India is 9h ahead of Newfoundland and 12h30m ahead of British Columbia and Yukon; clock changes affect some differences. The shared board keeps feedback and decisions visible across the time difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

Tell us about your business, customers and goals. We agree the store's scope with you, including what the build needs to cover.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback before we write theme code, so changes can be made at the design stage.

  3. 03

    Build and test

We develop the store and test it on real devices and browsers. You can review the work as it takes shape and raise questions with the people building it.

  4. 04

    Launch

We connect the domain, remove the store password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.

  5. 05

    Handover

Your team learns how to manage orders, products and discounts, so those everyday tasks can be handled without asking a developer for each change.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Gather the material that describes your catalogue, payments and existing store.

  • Product dataTitles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock by location. Weights feed calculated shipping rates.
  • Product contentConsistent photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
  • Tool requirementsNote the apps and services you use or plan to use, and what each must do.
  • Migration filesBring product, customer and order exports, plus the URLs that bring the most traffic and sales.
  • Payments and policiesHave business and bank details ready, along with your shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies. Review any generated templates.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and work involved?

The scope determines how much configuration, development and testing the store needs.

  • Catalogue structure

Bundles, made-to-order choices and specifications driven by metafields add setup and theme work beyond a straightforward product catalogue.

  • Business logic

Custom rules need development and testing. Public apps with Functions work on any plan; custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs need Shopify Plus.

  • Migration depth

Moving products alone is lighter than also moving customers, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects from an existing platform.

  • Connections and markets

ERP, accounting, warehouse or marketplace connections add work, especially with stock and price sync in both directions. Each market with its own prices, translations and shipping rates adds setup.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development

  • Missing redirects

Shopify product and collection paths change during a migration. Prepare a full old-to-new URL map and import it at launch; redirects work only from URLs that no longer load a page.

  • Loose product data

Automated collections and filters read tags, product types and vendors. Keep those fields consistent so products appear in the intended places.

  • Editing the live theme

A mistake appears to visitors immediately. Duplicate the theme, make changes on the copy, preview them and publish when approved.

  • Adding an app for every small task

Apps can add subscriptions and page scripts. Check theme files when uninstalling, as some apps leave code behind.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Canada

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?

There is no fixed price: the work depends on the theme, the connections you need and any migration from an existing store. A custom theme needs design and build work; moving products, customers and orders also involves redirects. Once we agree the scope, we can discuss a quote.

Can I hire you to build a Shopify store from scratch?

Yes. We can build a store for a first-time online seller and prepare your staff to run it. Shopify handles hosting, security and software updates, so your team can focus on managing the store. We can also set up product details in the theme, including specifications and care instructions.

How should I choose a payment gateway?

Compare the total cost per order as well as the payment methods you need. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even when Shopify Payments is also active. That comparison is especially useful if Shopify Payments is unavailable to your business.

Can the store handle personalised products?

Yes. Shopify supports up to three options per product, such as size, colour and material. A fourth choice, such as engraving text or a custom length, needs line item properties in the theme or an app. We can use that distinction when planning how customers enter their choices.

Will I own the store after handover?

You own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in to the team that built the store. That gives you control over those assets after handover. Your staff can continue managing the store, and you can decide who works on it as your requirements change.

What support is available after launch?

Ongoing support is available from the same people who designed and built your store. After launch, review installed apps, staff accounts and collaborator access, removing anything no longer used. Shopify reports can also show conversion rate and cart abandonment, while Search Console shows organic clicks and product-page indexing.
