Choosing

Which Shopify setup should you choose?

Start with the features your store needs. Apps add features quickly, but each one can bring a recurring fee, extra scripts and dependence on its maker. Custom code or a custom app can fit a specific requirement more closely; it also needs maintenance as Shopify changes. Weigh the ongoing upkeep alongside the work needed to get the feature running.

A headless storefront built with Hydrogen or Next.js suits a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow. You give up Shopify’s theme editor, though, and apps that add features through a theme may not work with that setup. Consider who will make content changes after launch before choosing that route.

For selling in several countries, Shopify Markets supports local-currency pricing, translations and international domains from one store. Separate stores suit businesses that need different catalogues or teams by country, or payouts in different currencies. We help you weigh these choices, and you speak directly to the people designing and building your store.

Local

What Calgary businesses need from a store

Calgary has retail and health and wellness businesses that may need to show more than a product title and description. For a catalogue with dimensions, care instructions or size charts, we use metafields to hold those details and show them in their own section of the theme. That gives your team a structured place to maintain the information as products change.

Calgary’s distribution and transportation activity also puts catalogue and fulfilment decisions in view for businesses selling products. A growing direct-to-consumer brand can need a custom mobile-focused theme, reviews and subscriptions connected to store data. For a brand selling into several countries, local-currency prices, translated content and market-specific shipping can be managed from one admin.

Rules

What a Shopify store in Canada has to handle

The GST or HST rate depends on the place of supply, such as where goods are delivered. We configure the store’s tax settings for the markets you sell in, using your shipping and tax requirements.

Commercial website publications for Quebec must be in French. If you sell there, we set up French content for the relevant store pages.

For commercial email, consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe mechanism affect the build. We set up consent collection and email details, including your current mailing address and an unsubscribe mechanism.

How it runs

How a Shopify project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 11h30m ahead of Alberta, so the shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across the time difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, customers and goals, then agree the store scope with you. Bring the decisions and requirements you already have, and we can work through the rest together.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback before any theme code is written.

  3. 03

    Build and preview

We work on an unpublished theme copy while your live store keeps trading. You preview and approve the work before publication.

  4. 04

    Launch

We connect the domain, remove the password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.

  5. 05

    Handover

Your team learns to manage orders, products and discounts before taking over the day-to-day running of the store.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

These materials help us understand what the store needs to contain and connect.

  • A Shopify account and plan in your business’s name, with your own billing.
  • A product sheet with prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock by location.
  • Business and bank details, plus shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies. Review generated templates before use.
  • A list of current and planned tools, with what each must do.
  • For a migration, exports from the old store and a list of URLs bringing the most traffic and sales.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline

The scope determines how much design, configuration, development and testing the store needs.

  • Theme route

Adjusting an existing theme is a smaller job than designing and building a custom theme.

  • Catalogue structure

Bundles, made-to-order choices and specification fields add setup and theme work.

  • Business logic

Custom rules need development and testing; custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs also need Shopify Plus.

  • Connections and markets

Two-way stock and price sync, and extra markets with their own prices, translations and shipping rates, add work.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development

  • Missing redirects

Shopify uses fixed product and collection paths. Prepare a full old-to-new URL map; redirects work only from URLs that no longer load a page.

  • Adding an app for every small need

Apps can add subscriptions and scripts. Check theme files when uninstalling, since some apps leave code behind.

  • Editing the live theme

A mistake is visible to visitors immediately. Duplicate the theme, make changes on the copy and preview it before publishing.

  • Leaving demo material in place

Check for placeholder policies, theme content and default notification wording before launch.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Calgary

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?

There is no fixed price. The work depends on details such as a catalogue needing a fourth product choice, custom order rules and migration from an existing platform. For example, engraving text needs line item properties or an app, while a migration includes moving data and putting redirects in place. A quote needs an agreed scope.

Can I hire you to build a Shopify store from scratch?

Yes. We can build a store for a first-time online seller and prepare it for search from launch, with clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages. Shopify also lets your staff run the store without managing hosting, security or software updates themselves.

How much can you change the Shopify checkout?

Shopify runs the checkout itself. Standard checkout customisation is available from the Basic plan up, while apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus. Tell us which part of checkout you want to change so the requirement can be assessed against the plan.

Should I use Shopify Payments or another gateway?

Compare the total cost per order before choosing. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even if Shopify Payments is also active. If Shopify Payments is unavailable to your business, compare the gateways available to you and account for that extra fee in the comparison.

Will I own the store after handover?

You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. You can also review staff accounts and collaborator access from time to time and remove access that is no longer used. Shopify expires collaborator access that goes unused.

Can you help after the store launches?

Yes. Ongoing support follows launch from the same people who designed and built the store. To decide what needs attention, review Shopify reports for conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers, alongside organic clicks and product-page indexing in Search Console.
