Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build a custom storefront?
An existing theme is a useful starting point when its layouts suit your products and the way customers buy. Customising it keeps the initial work lighter, and later theme updates are simpler. A custom theme gives you more room for unusual products and a distinct brand, but subsequent layout changes need development work. Think about who will make those changes after launch as well as what you need on the first day.
A headless storefront built with Hydrogen or Next.js is another route for a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow. The trade-off is that you give up the theme editor, and apps that add features through a theme may not work on the new storefront. It is worth checking those app dependencies before choosing this route, particularly if your staff expect to make layout changes themselves.
Checkout has its own limits. Shopify runs it, and standard checkout customisation is available from the Basic plan up. Apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus, so bring any specific checkout requirements into the decision before settling on a theme or plan.
Local
What Toronto businesses need from a Shopify store
Toronto has strengths in fashion and design. For a direct-to-consumer brand in those fields, a faster custom theme gives products their own presentation, while subscriptions, reviews and email flows can connect to store data. We connect and test the services you choose.
With distribution warehouses concentrated in parts of Toronto, a retailer that also has physical shops may need a clear view of online and in-store stock. Shopify's point-of-sale app can sit alongside the online store, giving staff a way to work with stock in one system.
Toronto is also a centre for music, theatre and screen production. An organisation selling merchandise can use product metafields for details such as dimensions or care instructions, with those details displayed in their own theme section instead of being buried in a description.
Rules
What a Shopify store selling in Canada needs to handle
The GST or HST rate charged depends on the place of supply, such as the province or territory where goods are delivered. We configure the store's taxes for its market and use your shipping requirements to inform the setup, so the destinations you sell to are part of the work from the start.
If you sell into Quebec, commercial publications on your website need to be in French. We plan for French store content as part of the market setup; Shopify can manage translated content and market-specific shipping from one admin.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is ahead of Canada, and Eastern Time moves 1 hour closer during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that gap.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals, then agree the store scope with you. Bring the buying and catalogue needs you already know about.
- 02
Design
We prepare desktop and mobile page designs and refine them with your feedback before code starts. You can review how products and collections will be presented.
- 03
Access
The store stays in your account. You approve our collaborator access, choose its permissions and can remove that access at any time.
- 04
Build and preview
Theme work takes place on an unpublished copy. You preview and approve it before publication while the live store continues trading.
- 05
Launch and handover
We connect the domain, remove the password, switch payments to live, import redirects and place a real test order that is refunded. Your team learns to manage orders, products and discounts.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather the material that applies to your store, including any exports from an existing platform.
- Your Shopify account and plan in the business's own name and billing.
- A product sheet with titles, prices, SKUs, weights, options and stock per location.
- Consistent product photos, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, and reviewed shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies.
- For a migration, product, customer and order exports, plus the URLs bringing the most traffic and sales.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of Shopify development
The work changes with the store you need and the systems it must connect.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme is less work than designing and building a custom theme for your brand.
Catalogue structure
Bundles, made-to-order choices and metafield-driven specifications add setup and theme work.
Migration depth
Moving customers, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects takes more work than moving products alone.
Integrations and markets
Two-way stock and price sync, translations and market-specific shipping each add configuration work.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Editing the live theme directly
Duplicate it first, make changes on the copy and preview them before publishing. A live edit exposes mistakes to visitors immediately.
Using inconsistent product data
Keep tags, product types and vendors consistent so automated collections and filters put products in the right place.
Leaving demo content in place
Review placeholder policies and default notification wording before launch, alongside the theme's sample content.
Adding an app for every small task
Check the scripts and subscriptions each app brings, and inspect theme files when uninstalling because some apps leave code behind.
Questions

Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The work involved in a custom app, its later maintenance and the recurring fees of any installed apps all affect what you need to budget for. Gateway choice affects ongoing costs too: a third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee. Ask us for a quote once the scope is agreed.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. We can build a store for a first-time online seller who wants staff to run it without managing hosting, security or software updates. We also build it ready for search from launch, with clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages. Your team can then manage the store's day-to-day work.
How should I add personalised choices to a product?
Start by separating standard product options from the extra information a buyer needs to provide. Shopify allows up to three options per product, such as size, colour and material. A fourth choice, such as engraving text or a custom length, needs line item properties in the theme or an app.
Can you organise my products into collections?
Yes. Collections can be manual, with your staff choosing each product, or automated using conditions such as tag, product type, vendor or price. Automated collections stay current as matching products are added, but they rely on consistent product data. The right choice depends on how you want to maintain the catalogue.
Will I own my store and its content?
You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. After launch, review staff accounts and collaborator access from time to time and remove access that is no longer used. Shopify also expires collaborator access that goes unused.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support follows launch from the same people who designed and built your store. You can also use Shopify reports to review conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers. Search Console shows organic clicks and product-page indexing, giving you details to discuss when deciding what to work on next.
