Choosing
Should you choose cross-platform, native or a web app?
For an app built around accounts, forms, bookings, maps or content, cross-platform development is a practical starting point. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android while adding native modules where a feature needs them. That keeps the shared parts of the build in one place, while leaving room for platform-specific work.
A fully native build suits an app that needs deep device features. Flutter is another cross-platform option: it uses Dart and draws its own interface, which suits a highly customised design when your team is willing to work in Dart. The choice affects the skills needed to maintain the app as well as how the screens are built.
A progressive web app suits some staff tools and skips store review. It will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them, though, and an iPhone user must add it to the Home Screen before it can ask to send notifications. Choose with the daily task and distribution route in mind.
Local
What Winnipeg organisations need from an app
Retail and health care are major employment sectors in Winnipeg. A retailer with repeat customers might need reordering, saved payment details and a quick checkout; an appointment business needs booking, reminders, payments and a staff view of the day’s schedule. Those are different flows, so each needs its own screen and checkout decisions.
Large organisations in the city include the University of Manitoba and Manitoba Hydro. For an organisation whose users already return frequently to a web platform, an app can reuse existing accounts, data and backend services. The useful starting point is the task people repeat, then the information they need available on their phone to complete it.
Rules
What an app project in Canada has to handle
For private-sector commercial activity, PIPEDA sets federal rules for collecting, using and disclosing personal information. Decide what your app needs to collect and what you will do with it before account screens and data storage are built. We set up the accounts and data services, plus a link to your privacy policy inside the app and in its store listing. The policy needs to reflect what the app actually collects.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Manitoba, so the shared board gives you a place to leave feedback for us across the time difference.
- 01
Discover
Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We use that discussion to agree the scope with you before the build begins.
- 02
Design
We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback. You can review the flow before any code is written.
- 03
Build and test
We send test builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Try the tasks yourself and share what needs changing.
- 04
Submit
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You keep those accounts in your business’s control.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
A few decisions and materials will make the discussion more useful.
- List the tasks users must complete in the first release, in the order they would do them.
- Start registering developer accounts in your company’s name and arrange the D-U-N-S number needed for organisation verification.
- If you plan to use a new personal Google Play account, arrange opted-in testers for its required closed test.
- For an app with a login, prepare a working demo account and a live backend for Apple’s review.
- Plan to keep the code repository and signing access in your business’s name.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time of app development
The scope determines how much has to be built, connected and tested.
Existing services
A documented backend API saves work; a new backend and admin panel add a substantial build.
Integrations
Each payment gateway, booking system or device connection needs setup, testing and failure handling.
Live features
Tracking and chat need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that request data when opened.
User content
Posts or other user-generated material need filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with app development
Asking for notification permission immediately
Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications remain off until the user allows them.
Leaving notification controls vague
Use a sending service, define who receives each message and when, and give people settings to switch off unwanted categories.
Adding an analytics or advertising SDK without updating privacy answers: Check the data it collects and include it in Google Play’s Data safety form.

How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price: the scope determines the work. Separate customer, driver and staff roles each need their own screens and permissions, while sharing a backend with your website and admin tools affects what needs to be built. Once we have agreed the scope, ask us for a quote.
How do I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that can explain the app’s purpose and how you will judge its use after release. Ask what the app will offer beyond your existing website, since a website wrapped in an app shell risks rejection. Discuss retention, task drop-off and crash-free rate as measures to review.
Can you include payments and subscriptions?
Yes. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. The checkout depends on what you sell: digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app generally use store billing, while physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment method. Some storefronts or regions permit alternatives.
What is included beyond the app screens?
An app project usually includes a backend and an admin panel as well as the app on the phone. The backend holds accounts and data; the admin panel gives staff a place to edit content, look up customers, issue refunds and block abusive accounts without calling a developer.
Who owns the code and content?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Discuss access and handover as part of the project scope, so your business knows what it will receive and can keep control of those assets after the app is released.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support covers bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Plan maintenance releases as part of the work: Google Play requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, and out-of-date apps become unavailable to new users on newer devices.
