Choosing
Should you choose cross-platform or native development?
Cross-platform development suits many apps built around accounts, forms, lists, maps, bookings, payments or content. React Native and Flutter share much of their code across iOS and Android, so your team maintains less separate platform code. We usually choose React Native, adding native modules when a feature needs them. Its JavaScript or TypeScript code also gives web developers a way to contribute, and some logic can be shared with a React web app.
Flutter uses Dart and draws its own interface. It is an option for a heavily branded app where you want screens to look identical across platforms and your team is willing to work in Dart. Native development in Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android fits deeper device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features needed at launch. The trade-off is maintaining separate codebases. Start with the features your users need, then assess which approach gives you the right level of platform access and control over the interface.
Local
What Vermont organisations need from an app
Dairy, forestry and maple syrup are part of Vermont's agricultural economy. For a producer with staff working away from the office, an app could put job forms, photos, signatures and location details on a phone, then sync completed records back to the office when signal returns. The scope needs to distinguish the information staff view from the records they create on site.
The University of Vermont is the state's largest university. For an organisation handling appointments, a mobile app could give users booking and reminder screens while staff see the day's schedule. Where people already use a web platform frequently, the app can reuse their accounts, data and backend instead of asking them to manage a separate set of details.
Rules
What a US mobile app project has to handle
For state and local government apps, the US Department of Justice's ADA Title II rule requires WCAG 2.1 Level AA. If your organisation falls under that rule, we set up the app screens against that standard as part of the design and build, rather than leaving accessibility until after the interface is complete. Bring the requirement into the scope discussion so it is accounted for across the screens people use.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less ahead during daylight saving time. We use the shared board to keep feedback and project work visible across that difference.

Discover
Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We agree the scope with you before moving into design.
- 02
Design
We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code.
- 03
Check the prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback helps you change screens while changes are cheaper than they would be after build.
- 04
Try the build
We put test builds on your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks, so you can give feedback from real use.
- 05
Submit
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the information that will shape your screens and flows for iOS and Android.
- List the tasks users must complete in the first release, in the order they would do them.
- Note the website, CRM, booking system, ERP software or payment provider involved, whether each has an API and who holds admin access.
- Start registering Apple and Google developer accounts in your company's name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
- Check your Google Play account typenew personal accounts need a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for at least 14 days.
- Decide which notification categories users need, who should receive them and when; users also need settings to switch categories off.
Cost & time
What affects app development cost and time
The scope determines how much design, backend work and testing the project needs.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Integrations
Maps, payment gateways, booking systems and hardware each need setup, testing and failure handling.
Interface variations
Custom animation, extra languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Posts or other user-generated material need filtering, reporting and blocking features, plus published contact details.
Existing systems
A documented backend API can reduce work; a new backend and admin panel add substantial scope.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building an app
Wrapping a website in an app shell
Plan useful app features from the start. Apple expects more than a repackaged website, and a shell risks rejection.
Demanding sign-in immediately
Let people use the app without logging in when it has no significant account-based features.
Requesting notification permission on first launch
Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user allows them.
Adding an analytics or advertising SDK without updating privacy answers: Include data collected by third-party SDKs in Google Play's Data safety form.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Vermont
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to have an app developed?
There is no fixed price. The scope of offline work is a major driver: showing last-loaded data without signal is much smaller than creating and editing records offline and resolving conflicts when they sync. Another is whether your app needs a backend shared with your website and admin tools.
How do I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that can explain how it will measure use and diagnose problems after release. Ask how it will track people returning to the app and where they leave the main task. Analytics and crash reporting in the first release also show which screens are used and which devices crash.
Can you build payments and subscriptions into the app?
Yes. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. The checkout needs to match what you sell: Google Play billing is required for digital goods and subscriptions sold in the app, while physical goods and services use a different payment route. Some regions allow alternative billing.
Who owns the app code?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. That gives you control over those assets after launch and lets you decide how the product is maintained. Discuss ownership before work starts so the people responsible for the app know what will belong to your business.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support covers bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can be sent over the air with tools such as Expo EAS Update. Native code changes, new permissions and Expo SDK upgrades still need a store release.
Does the app need an account deletion option?
Yes, if people can create accounts in the app. Apple requires an in-app way to start deletion; deactivation alone is insufficient. Google Play also requires an in-app deletion path for the account and associated data, plus a web link where people can request deletion.
