Choosing
Should you choose a cross-platform or native app?
React Native shares a codebase across iOS and Android, making it a practical choice for apps built around accounts, forms, bookings, maps, payments or content. It uses each platform’s own interface components, and some logic can be shared with a React website. Web developers can contribute too. We use React Native for cross-platform builds, adding native modules where the app needs them.
A native app uses Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. It suits products that depend on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch. The trade-off is maintaining separate codebases. We choose native development when those device requirements make it the better fit for the work.
A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool. It skips store review, although it does not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. That restriction belongs in the decision if reminders are central to the tool.
Local
What Maine organisations need from an app
Tourism and outdoor recreation are part of Maine’s economy. An appointment-based operator in that sector could use booking, reminders and payments in an app, with a staff view of the day’s schedule. Those flows give customers and staff a shared view of appointments.
Maine produces food products as well as paper, lumber and wood products. A shop or restaurant serving repeat customers needs reordering, saved payment details and a quick checkout; notifications can help it reach customers at a useful moment.
Brunswick Landing includes a business park and a college satellite campus. An organisation there with a frequently used web platform could reuse its accounts and data in an app, instead of asking users to start again with a separate account.
Rules
Payments for a United States app
The United States is a country where businesses can sign up for Stripe. Your checkout still needs to reflect what you sell: Apple requires in-app purchase for digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app, while physical goods and services used outside it need another payment method. We set up in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores, and account for the appropriate checkout route when planning the payment flow.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback across that time difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals. You explain what people need to accomplish, and we agree the scope with you before design begins.
- 02
Design
We prepare screens for iOS and Android and refine them with your feedback before writing code. Review the flows with the people who will use them.
- 03
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback gives you a chance to change screens before they are built.
- 04
Test
You receive builds on your own phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Use the app for real tasks and share what needs attention.
- 05
Release
We handle the App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release. You review the listing information alongside the product you have tested.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the decisions you have made and the questions you still need to resolve.
- Write the actions users need in the first release, in the order they will do them.
- Start registering Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation verification needs a D-U-N-S number.
- For a new personal Google Play account, plan for its required closed test before production release.
- Prepare a privacy policy that matches the data the app collects, for the listing and the app.
- Decide which screens and drop-off points you want analytics and crash reporting to reveal.
- List notification categories and who should receive each message, so users can control their settings.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time needed
The scope determines the work involved in building and testing your app.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.
Integrations
A booking system, payment gateway, map or hardware connection adds setup, testing and failure handling.
Existing systems
A documented backend API reduces the work; a new backend and admin panel add substantial build work.
User-generated content
Filtering, reports, blocking and published contact details add moderation work to the app.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building an app
Asking for notification permission immediately
Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications remain off until the user allows them.
Adding an analytics or advertising SDK without revisiting privacy answers: Update Google Play’s Data safety form to cover data collected by third-party SDKs.
Making account creation easy but deletion hard
Give users an in-app route to delete their account and associated data, and provide the additional web request link required by Google Play.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Maine
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. Offline editing with later sync and conflict handling adds more work than displaying the last loaded data, while custom animation, extra languages or tablet layouts add design and testing across screens. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
How do I choose an app development company?
Ask how the proposed app will serve users and connect with the systems you already have. An app that only wraps a website risks store rejection and offers little reason to install it. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools.
What is included in mobile app development?
The work includes app screens and flows, plus the services behind them. We build accounts, data handling, notifications and admin tools, and set up targeted push notifications. A useful scope also identifies what staff need to manage without calling a developer, such as customer lookups or refunds.
Who owns the app and its accounts?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name as well. That gives you control of the assets needed to move the app if you decide to work with someone else later.
What support does an app need after launch?
Plan for maintenance releases and check how people use the app. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level; outdated apps can become unavailable to new users on newer devices. Retention, task drop-off and crash-free rate help you assess a release.
Should I consider Flutter for my app?
Flutter is an option when a heavily branded, custom interface is central to the product and the team is willing to work in Dart. It draws its own interface, so screens can look identical across platforms. Discuss those requirements before settling on the technology.
