Choosing
Should you choose WordPress or a custom website?
WordPress suits a team that publishes often and wants to edit most of the site itself. Its choice of plugins gives you ways to add features, although someone needs to keep WordPress updated for security. Before choosing it, think about who will make those updates alongside the content work.
A custom-coded site in Next.js suits a design that needs freedom from template limits, fast pages and tight security. Structural changes usually need a developer. A headless setup adds a separate content editor to a custom front end, which is useful for heavy editing but creates more parts to host and maintain.
Hosted builders such as Wix, Squarespace and Webflow suit smaller sites that an owner wants to run alone. You give up some control over code and speed, and moving away later might mean rebuilding the site. We recommend WordPress or Next.js after learning how your team works, so the editing arrangements are clear before the platform is chosen.
Local
What Vermont businesses need from a website
Dairy, forestry, maple syrup and wine are part of Vermont’s agricultural economy. If you work in one of these sectors, your site needs clear descriptions of what you offer and a contact route that reaches the right person. Decide who will supply the descriptions and photos, and what visitors see after submitting an enquiry.
Organisations such as the University of Vermont also have information to keep current. For a university or a business serving one, a useful brief identifies the pages visitors need and the people responsible for them. We provide an editor for pages, news, projects and careers, so your team has a practical way to update the material it publishes.
Rules
What a US website project has to handle
For a business open to the public, US Department of Justice guidance says the ADA covers goods and services offered on the web and identifies WCAG as helpful guidance. Agree an accessibility target in your brief. We set up a clear heading structure and design desktop and mobile pages against that target, then refine the layouts with your feedback. The same search-ready structure includes page titles, descriptions and an XML sitemap.
How it runs
How a website project runs with us
We work through discovery, design, build and launch with your input at each stage. IST is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time, so we keep work moving by agreeing scope and gathering design feedback before development starts.
- 01
Discover
Tell us who buys from you, why they choose you and what visitors should do on the site. We agree the scope together.
- 02
Design
We prepare the sitemap, wireframes and page designs for desktop and mobile. You review them and share feedback before the build.
- 03

We develop the site or an editable CMS and test it on real devices and browsers. Your team reviews the working pages.
- 04
Launch
We set up the domain, email, analytics and Search Console, then walk your team through the handover.
- 05
Check
You proofread every page, submit each form and confirm who receives its messages before the site goes live.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the material you already have, along with the decisions your team still needs to make.
- Your logo in SVG, AI or EPS, plus brand colours and fonts, or a note that these need creating.
- A ranked list of the services or products you want to feature.
- Your main goal, such as quote requests or calls, and who handles each enquiry.
- Real photos of your team, premises and finished work.
- Case studies, permitted client logos, testimonials and certifications in a folder.
- Sites you like and dislike, with a short reason for each choice.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The scope determines the design, build and checking work involved.
Page templates
Pages sharing a layout take less design and build work than pages that each need a distinct template.
Features
Booking, calculators, member logins, multiple languages and CRM connections add design, development and testing work.
Content
Copy and photos ready to publish keep the work smaller; copywriting, photography or translation add to the scope.
Migration
Blog posts, news archives and downloadable files from an existing site need moving and checking.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building your website
Leaving content until the end
Use real headings and paragraphs during design so layouts reflect the space your copy needs.
Reviewing only on a large screen
Check every page on a phone before approving the design.
Putting accounts in an agency’s name
Hold the domain and hosting accounts in your business name and grant access to the people doing the work.
Leaving search checks until after launch
Check page titles and the sitemap, and remove any indexing block left from development.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Vermont
Page updated 5 November 2026
Is website development still worth it?
It can be worthwhile when the site gives buyers the information they need and makes it straightforward to contact you. A professional services firm, for example, can give each service and partner a page where visitors can check expertise. Track form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks in analytics, along with the pages visitors started from.
How much does it cost to have a website built?
There is no fixed price. Your platform choice, the amount your team needs to edit and the work involved in keeping content current all shape the scope. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed, so you can see what work is included before deciding how to proceed.
Can a custom website still have a content editor?
Yes. A custom Next.js site can include an editor, so choosing custom development does not mean every content change has to go through a developer. WordPress is suited to teams that edit a lot of content themselves. We recommend an option after understanding how your team works and what it needs to update.
What is included in the development and handover?
We build in Next.js or use WordPress when your team needs full editing control. At handover, we set up the domain, email, analytics and Search Console and provide a walkthrough for your team. That gives you a chance to see how the site is managed and ask about the setup.
Will I own my website?
Yes. You own the domain, the content and the code, with no lock-in. That makes ownership clear from the outset: the material you provide and the code for your site remain yours after the work is handed over. Keep those assets accessible to the people responsible for the site.
Can you work with our existing brand?
Yes. We can build on your existing logo, colours and fonts, and prepare brand assets for the web where needed. Share the files your team already uses and tell us which elements should carry through to the site, so the page design starts from the identity you have.
