Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform app, a native app or a web app?
A React Native app is a practical choice when you want to reach iPhone and Android users with one shared codebase. It uses each platform’s own interface components, and web developers can contribute. Some logic can also be shared with a React website. We build in React Native and add native modules where the app needs them.
Native development suits an app built around deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch. You would maintain two codebases, so the build and ongoing work differ from a shared-code approach. Flutter is another option: it draws its own interface and suits custom designs that need to look identical across platforms, provided your team is ready to work in Dart.
A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool that does not need an app-store listing. It skips store review, but on iPhone it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. Store distribution requires packaging it for the stores.
Local
What Massachusetts organisations need from an app
Massachusetts has biotechnology, engineering and higher education organisations. A team carrying out inspections or maintenance needs mobile forms, photos, signatures and job locations available in the field, with records synced to the office when a connection returns. Offline editing and sync need to be planned into the app from the start.
Greater Boston has a research economy in which a startup launching a consumer or marketplace product needs coverage across both app stores and analytics that show who returns after installing. Appointment businesses serving customers there need a different set of screens: booking, reminders, payments and a staff view of the day’s schedule.
Rules
What a US mobile app project has to handle
For a state or local government app, the ADA Title II rule requires mobile apps to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. That changes the screen design and testing work. We set up the app’s screens and controls with the accessibility standard in view, then test the booking, account or other task flows against it. Staff-facing screens need the same consideration when they form part of the government app.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter; the difference is 1 hour less during daylight saving time. Shared boards give you a place to leave feedback for the work ahead.

Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We agree the scope with you before moving into design.
- 02
Design
We create iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code.
- 03
Try the prototype
Put the clickable screens in front of a few customers or staff. Changes are less costly at this stage than after the screens are built.
- 04
Test on your phone
During development, you receive test builds through TestFlight on iPhone or Google Play’s internal or closed testing tracks. Use them to send feedback from real use.
- 05
Release
We prepare the App Store and Google Play listings, submit the app and handle its release.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the information that helps us agree what the first release needs to do.
- List the actions users must take, in the order they would take them.
- Note your website, CRM, booking or payment systems, their APIs and who holds admin access.
- Start the D-U-N-S number process early for organisation developer accounts.
- For a new personal Google Play account, plan for the required closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for at least 14 days.
- Have access to your own developer accounts ready for store listings, submission and review.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time of app development
The work grows with the systems and interactions the app needs to support.
Backend
A documented existing API reduces work; a new backend and admin panel can be as large a task as the app.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Screen design
Custom animation, languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Apps with user-generated content need filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details, all of which add work to the product.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with an app
Wrapping a website
Apple asks apps to offer more than a repackaged site. Plan useful app-specific tasks before submitting.
Demanding sign-up too early
Let people see value before creating an account. Apple asks apps without significant account-based features to permit use without login.
Leaving privacy answers behind
When you add an analytics or advertising SDK, update the Google Play Data safety form to cover data it collects.
Giving away control
Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name so the app is easier to move later.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Massachusetts
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers include offline editing and sync, connections to systems such as payments or booking, and the rules and settings behind push notifications. Showing previously loaded data offline takes less work than allowing edits and resolving sync conflicts. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
Which company should I choose for app development?
Choose a company that can explain its platform recommendation and how the app will connect to your existing systems. We generally recommend React Native for a shared iOS and Android codebase, and go native for deep device features. We can also build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools.
What should be included in the first release?
Include the app, the backend and the staff tools needed to run the service, along with analytics and crash reporting. We set up reporting to show which screens people use, where they leave and which devices crash. If your app allows account creation, Google Play also requires an in-app deletion path and a web deletion-request link.
Who owns the app and its code?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. That gives your business control of those assets after launch. Ask us to include the app and its backend in the agreed scope so you have a clear view of the work being delivered and the parts your staff will use.
What happens after the app launches?
We provide ongoing support for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. Regular maintenance releases also help keep the app available to new users on current Android devices. After release, look at retention, where people leave the main task and the crash-free rate to judge what needs attention.
How do payments work in an app?
The checkout depends on what you sell. Digital content and subscriptions used in the app generally use the stores’ in-app payment systems; physical goods and services use another payment method. Some storefronts or regions allow outside payment options. We set up in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores when they fit the product.
