Choosing

Should you choose a cross-platform or native app?

For an app built around accounts, bookings, forms, payments or content, a cross-platform build is a practical starting point. We use React Native to share a codebase across iOS and Android, adding native modules where needed. It uses each platform’s interface components, and web developers can contribute to the code.

A native build fits apps that depend on deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android give you separate platform codebases, so there is more code to build and maintain. We choose native when the device features justify that extra work.

A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool. It skips store review, but it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to their Home Screen. The choice affects how people find and use the product, as well as what your team maintains.

Local

What Toowoomba organisations need from an app

Toowoomba is an education centre with schools including Toowoomba Grammar and Fairholme College. A school considering an app for appointments could start with booking and reminders, then give staff a view of the day’s schedule. Notifications also need rules for who receives each message and settings that let people turn off categories they do not want.

Organisations headquartered in Toowoomba include People First Bank, Wagners and Namoi Cotton. Where customers already use a web platform frequently, an app can reuse its accounts and data. Staff also need an admin panel to edit content, look up customers or block abusive accounts without calling a developer. Those staff tasks belong in the scope alongside the phone screens.

Rules

What an app project in Australia has to handle

If your app takes payments, the type of purchase affects the checkout. Google Play billing is required for digital goods and subscriptions sold in the app and must not be used for physical goods or services. We set up the payment and subscription flow for the purchase involved. Australian rules also remove surcharging on debit, prepaid and credit card payments on the eftpos, Mastercard and Visa networks, so we set the checkout to leave those surcharges out.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India time is 4h30m behind Brisbane, so the shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across the time difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the main task you want customers or staff to complete.

  2. 02

    Design

We refine the iOS and Android screens with your feedback before writing code. Put the clickable prototype in front of a few customers or staff and bring their observations back.

  3. 03

    Build and test

We build the agreed product and test it on real devices. You review the work and tell us where a screen or task needs attention before launch.

  4. 04

    Submit

We handle the listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. If the app has a login, have a working demo account and live backend ready, and leave room for a fix and resubmission.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Gather these details before we agree the scope.

  • Developer accountsStart registering Apple and Google accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
  • TestersNew personal Google Play accounts need a closed test before a production release.
  • Existing systemsList your website, booking system, CRM or payment provider, including API availability and who holds admin access.
  • Privacy policyPrepare a policy matching the data the app collects; it needs links in the app and its Apple listing.
  • Third-party toolsNote any analytics or advertising SDKs so their data collection is covered in Google Play’s Data safety form.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline

The scope determines how much there is to design, build and test.

  • Integrations

A payment gateway, maps, booking system or scanner adds setup, testing and failure handling.

  • Live features

Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.

  • User content

Posts or other user-generated material require filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details for Apple’s requirements.

  • Interface variations

Custom animation, extra languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Toowoomba

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price for every app. The main drivers include whether you already have a backend with a documented API and how much offline work the app must support. Showing previously loaded data offline is less work than allowing people to edit records and resolving conflicts when they sync.

How should I choose an app developer?

Choose a developer who can explain what people will do in the app and how the screens support that task. A site wrapped in an app shell risks rejection by Apple. Ask how visitors will see value before signing up: apps without significant account-based features should let people use them without a login.

Can the app use the same backend as my website?

Yes. We build a shared backend that serves your app, website and admin tools. That gives you a way to work with the same underlying service across those products. Discuss which existing accounts and data need to be available in each place when you agree the scope.

Who owns the code and developer accounts?

You own your code, domain and content, with no lock-in. Keep the developer accounts, signing access and code repository in your business’s name as well. Accounts or repositories held by an agency or freelancer can make the app harder to move when you want someone else to work on it.

What happens after the app launches?

We provide ongoing support for bug fixes, operating system updates and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can be sent through over-the-air tools, while native code changes and new permissions still need a store release. Track retention and crash-free rate to see how people use the app and how releases perform.
