Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform, native or web app?
For an app built around accounts, forms, bookings, payments or content, a shared codebase is a practical place to start. We use React Native for many projects: it shares code across iOS and Android while rendering each platform’s own interface components. Where an app needs deep device features, we choose native development. That gives the build access to those features without making a shared approach the starting assumption.
Flutter is another cross-platform option. It draws its own interface, which suits a heavily branded design where you want screens to look identical across platforms. Your team would need to be comfortable working in Dart, so consider who will maintain the app as well as how you want it to look.
A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool. It avoids store review, but it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. Check those trade-offs against how your users will find and use the product.

What Sheffield organisations need from an app
Sheffield has established manufacturing and steel-making businesses. If your work involves maintenance or inspection away from the office, an app needs to capture job forms, photos, signatures and location, then sync the records when a connection returns. Plan the office view too: staff need to find and use the records that come back from the field.
Sheffield’s theatre organisations include the Crucible and the Lyceum. For a theatre considering an app, the customer screens are only part of the work: staff also need an admin panel to look up customers, edit content and issue refunds. Decide which tasks your staff need to complete themselves before agreeing the app’s scope.
Rules
What a UK app project needs to handle
If your app project includes a website, decide how that site will use cookies. UK rules permit cookies used solely for statistics or appearance preferences without consent, provided visitors receive clear information and an easy way to object. We set up that information and objection route on the website when you use those exceptions. The choice belongs in the website build, alongside the features the site needs to support.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely across the UK and India time difference: India is 5h30m ahead, or 4h30m ahead during British Summer Time. We agree the scope, share designs for your feedback and keep the work moving through build and launch.

Discover
tell us about your business, audience and goals. We agree the scope with you before moving into design.
- 02
Design
we prepare the iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. Review the flows with the people who will use them.
- 03
Build
we use one React Native codebase for both platforms, adding native modules where the app needs them.
- 04
Test
you receive builds on your own phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Try the main tasks in real use and send us your feedback.
- 05
Release
we handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the decisions and access details that will shape the first release.
- List the tasks users must complete, in the order they will do them.
- List connected systems, their APIs and who holds admin access.
- Prepare a privacy policy matching what the app collects; Apple requires it in the listing and app.
- For a new personal Google Play account, arrange opted-in testers for the required closed test.
- If the app has a login, prepare a working demo account and live backend for Apple’s review.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time of app development
The work changes with the behaviour and connections you ask the app to support.
Integrations
each payment gateway, booking system, map or device connection needs setup, testing and handling for failures.
Live features
tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Offline work
showing previously loaded information is smaller in scope than editing records offline and resolving conflicts when they sync.
Design variations
custom animation, languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with an app
Wrapping a website
Apple expects more than a repackaged site. Define what the app lets people do before submitting it.
Forcing an early sign-up
let people use an app without logging in when it has no significant account-based features.
Asking for notification permission immediately
explain the benefit at a useful point, such as after an order. Android notifications stay off until the user allows them.
Leaving account deletion out
if users can create accounts, build an in-app deletion route. Google Play also requires a web link for deletion requests.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Sheffield
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The biggest drivers include how many types of user need their own screens and permissions, and whether there is an existing backend with a documented API. A new backend and admin panel add substantial work. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
How do I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that leaves your business in control of the product. Check that developer accounts, signing access and the code repository will be held in your business’s name. With us, you own your code, content and domain without lock-in, so those assets remain yours if you change providers.
Can the app use the same accounts as my website?
Yes. We build a shared backend that serves your app, website and admin tools, so customer accounts and data live in one place. This is useful when your customers already use your web platform and use it frequently enough to make an app worthwhile.
Can you add payments and subscriptions?
Yes. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. The checkout must match what you sell: digital content and subscriptions generally use the stores’ billing systems, while physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment method. Some regions or storefronts allow alternative options.
What support will the app need after launch?
Plan for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features after release. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, so regular maintenance releases help keep the app available to new users on newer devices. Track returning users and crash-free rates when assessing releases.
How will you set up push notifications?
We set up notifications with a sending service, rules for which people receive each message and when, and in-app settings for switching off unwanted categories. Agree the useful messages first, then give users control over the categories they receive so the app does not send every update to everyone.
