Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform, native or web app?
For most apps, we use React Native. It shares a codebase across iOS and Android, while native modules handle features that need them. If your product depends on deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work, a native build is another option. That means maintaining separate codebases for the platforms, with more work to make changes across both.
Flutter is another cross-platform option. It uses Dart and draws its own interface, which suits a heavily branded product where you want screens to look identical across platforms. Your team will need to be comfortable working in Dart. A progressive web app suits some staff tools and skips store review, though it will not appear in the stores unless packaged for them.
Start with the tasks people need to complete and the device features those tasks require. A staff tool used for forms has different requirements from a product built around deep device features. We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you before work begins.
Local
What Melbourne businesses need from an app
Clinics, salons and gyms in Victoria’s capital need customers to book and pay without making staff manage each appointment by hand. A useful app also gives staff a view of the day’s schedule and sends reminders before appointments.
Delivery teams serving the Port of Melbourne need job information that works when a signal is unavailable. Offline forms, photos, signatures and location details give the office a record to receive when the device reconnects.
Financial organisations in Melbourne’s financial centre need to consider the work behind customer-facing screens. An admin panel gives staff a place to look up customers and manage accounts, alongside the app and backend that hold the data.
Rules
What an app project in Australia has to handle
Australian accessibility guidance recommends WCAG 2.2 Level AA for digital goods and services. We use that target when designing the app’s screens and controls, including labels people can understand and layouts they can read. We also review those choices as the screens are built, so accessibility is part of the work on the product itself. Bring any accessibility needs you already know about to the screen-design stage.
How it runs
How a mobile app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 4h30m behind Melbourne, or 5h30m behind during daylight saving. The shared board gives you a place to review progress and leave feedback between calls.
- 01
Design
We refine the iOS and Android screens with your feedback before writing code. Review the main task from the first screen through to completion, and tell us where the steps do not match how your customers or staff work.
- 02
Prototype
Put the clickable prototype in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback can reveal a confusing screen while it is still cheaper to change than a built feature.
- 03
Build and test
We send test builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Use the app on your own device and share what happens during real tasks.
- 04
Measure
We include analytics and crash reporting in the first release. These show which screens people use, where they give up and which devices crash.
- 05
Release
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts while we prepare the release.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather the following before the first discussion or start preparing them as the scope takes shape.
- First-release tasksList what users must do, in the order they will do it.
- Developer accountsRegister Apple and Google accounts in your company’s name; organisation verification needs a D-U-N-S number.
- TestersIf you use a new personal Google Play account, arrange the required closed test before production release.
- Privacy policyPrepare a policy matching the data the app collects; Apple requires links in the listing and app.
- Account deletionPlan an in-app deletion path and a web request link for an app that creates accounts on Google Play.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timing of an app?
The scope determines how much design, build and testing work the project needs.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.
Screen design
Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Posts or other user-generated material need reporting, filtering and blocking tools, plus published contact details.
Existing systems
A documented backend API reduces the work; a new backend and admin panel add a substantial build alongside the app.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building an app
Wrapping a website
Give people useful app features beyond a repackaged site; an app shell risks store rejection.
Blocking access with sign-up
Let people see value before creating an account when the app has no significant account-based features.
Asking for notifications immediately
Request permission when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until permission is granted.
Adding an SDK without revisiting privacy answers
Update Google Play’s Data safety form to cover information collected by third-party SDKs.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Melbourne
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The work depends on what the app needs behind its screens, the integrations involved and any purchases or subscriptions it supports. A booking system or payment gateway needs setup, testing and failure handling. Once the scope is agreed, ask us for a quote.
How do I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that can explain its proposed scope and give you access to the people doing the work. We let you talk directly to the people who design and build your product. Ask how feedback reaches them and who will handle the store submission before you appoint a developer.
What is included beyond the app screens?
We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, keeping customer accounts and data in one place. For push notifications, the work also needs a sending service, rules for recipients and timing, and settings that let people switch off categories they do not want.
Can people delete their accounts in the app?
Yes. If your app lets people create accounts, plan the deletion flow as part of the product. Apple requires people to be able to start deleting their account inside the app; offering only a way to deactivate or disable it does not meet that requirement.
Who owns the app code?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. That gives you control over those assets after launch. Ask your developer to make ownership clear before work begins, so your team knows what it will retain and can plan for future changes to the product.
What support is available after launch?
We provide ongoing support for bug fixes, operating system updates and new features. Plan maintenance releases: Google Play requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. After release, review retention, drop-off in the main task and the crash-free rate to see how people use the app.
