What you get

What’s included in mobile app development

  • App design

Screens and flows designed for iOS and Android conventions.

  • Cross-platform build

One React Native codebase for both platforms, with native modules where needed.

  • Backend & APIs

Accounts, data, notifications and admin tools behind the app.

  • Push notifications

Timely, targeted notifications that bring people back.

  • Payments & subscriptions

In-app purchases and subscriptions on both stores.

  • Store launch

App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.

Tools we use: React Native, Expo, Swift, Kotlin, Firebase, Node.js.

Choosing

Should you choose cross-platform or native development?

A cross-platform app shares most of its code between iOS and Android. That makes it a practical option for an app centred on accounts, forms, lists, maps, bookings, payments or content. You still need screens that work for people using each platform; sharing code does not remove the need to make those screens usable.

We usually use React Native. It uses JavaScript or TypeScript and renders each platform’s own interface components. Web developers can contribute, and an app that sits alongside a React website can share some logic with it. We use native modules where a feature needs them, or build natively when the app needs deep device features.

Flutter is another cross-platform option. It uses Dart and draws its own interface, which suits a heavily branded design where you want screens to look identical across both platforms. Your team would need to be comfortable working in Dart. The choice affects who can contribute and how much control you have over the interface.

Local

What Hobart organisations need from an app

Healthcare and social assistance are significant parts of Hobart’s economy. A clinic planning an app needs a clear route from choosing an appointment to receiving a reminder and making a payment. Staff also need a view of the day’s schedule, so the scope has to cover their work as well as the customer’s screens.

Tourism is also significant in Hobart. For a visitor-facing business whose customers already use its web platform frequently, an app can reuse the same accounts and data. We build a shared backend for the app, website and admin tools, so staff have one place for the information those services use.

Rules

What an Australian app project has to handle

Australian guidance on equal access to digital goods and services recommends WCAG 2.2 at a minimum of Level AA. That affects the screens you ask us to design for iOS and Android. We set up those screens with that level as the accessibility target, and discuss it during design rather than leaving the decision until submission. Include accessibility in your review of the proposed screens before development begins.

How it runs

How a mobile app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 4h30m behind Hobart in standard time and 5h30m behind during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback for us across that difference, alongside the conversations we have on calls.

  1. 01

    Discover

Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We use that discussion to agree the scope with you before moving into screen design.

  2. 02

    Design

We design screens for iOS and Android. You review the flows and give feedback, and we refine the designs before writing code.

  3. 03

    Test

You receive builds on your own phone through TestFlight on iPhone or a Google Play internal or closed testing track. Your feedback comes from using the app.

  4. 04

    Launch

We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You keep those accounts in your control as the app moves towards release.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring what you have; we can discuss the scope together.

  • List the tasks users need in the first release, in the order they will do them.
  • Start Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation verification needs a D-U-N-S number.
  • Note the website, CRM, booking, ERP and payment systems involved, their APIs and who has admin access.
  • Prepare a privacy policy that matches the data the app collects, for links in the app and store listing.
  • For an app with a login, plan a working demo account and live backend for Apple’s review.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and time of app development

The work changes with the screens, permissions and systems in your scope.

  • User roles

Customers, drivers and staff each need their own flows and permissions, even when they use the same backend.

  • Live features

Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.

  • Design

Custom animation, extra languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • Backend

An existing backend with a documented API reduces the work. A new backend and admin panel can be as large a job as the app.

  • User content

Apps with user-generated content need filtering, reporting, blocking and contact details to meet Apple’s requirements.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with app development

  • Avoid wrapping your existing website in an app shell. Apple expects an app to offer more than a repackaged site, so plan what people will do in the app.

  • Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name. Accounts held by an agency or freelancer can make a later move difficult.

  • Update store privacy answers when you add an analytics or advertising SDK. Google Play’s Data safety form must cover data collected by those third-party tools.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Hobart

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price. Offline work is a major driver: showing last-loaded data takes less work than letting users edit records offline and resolving conflicts when they sync. In-app purchases and subscriptions also add work. Agree the scope first, then ask us for a free quote.

How do I choose an app development company?

Choose a team that gives you direct access to the people doing the design and build, and makes ownership clear. With us, you talk directly to those people. You also own your code, content and domain without lock-in, so those assets stay with your business.

How will payments work in my app?

The checkout depends on what you sell. Digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app generally use the stores’ in-app purchase systems. Physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment method. Some storefronts or regions allow outside payment links or alternative billing.

Can you set up push notifications?

Yes. Notifications need a sending service such as Firebase Cloud Messaging, rules for who receives each message and in-app settings for switching off unwanted categories. Ask for permission when the benefit is clear, such as after an order; on Android 13 and later, notifications remain off until the user allows them.

What happens if users want to delete their accounts?

The app needs a deletion route if it lets people create accounts. Apple requires users to be able to start deletion inside the app; deactivation alone is not enough. Google Play also requires an in-app path to delete the account and associated data, plus a web link for deletion requests.

What support is available after launch?

Launch is followed by ongoing support for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. We can also use over-the-air tools for JavaScript and content fixes; native code changes and new permissions still need a store release. Track returning users, task drop-off and crash-free rate to assess releases.
