Choosing
Which platform should you choose for your store?
Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. You can add features through apps, although app subscriptions add recurring costs and deeper checkout changes are limited to Shopify Plus. It is a straightforward option when your team wants to spend its effort running the catalogue and fulfilling orders.
WooCommerce is worth considering if your site already uses WordPress, or if you have substantial content and want control over the code, data and hosting. Someone will need to manage hosting, updates, security and plugin compatibility. A custom storefront such as Next.js on a commerce back end fits unusual catalogues or product configurators, but takes more build effort and usually needs a developer for later changes.
We recommend a platform after learning how your products and operations work. Gateway choice also affects the decision: we support Stripe, PayPal and other gateways where the country and platform allow them. Check the payment methods, settlement timing and handling of refunds and disputes before making your choice.
Local
What Cardiff organisations need from an online store
Cardiff is Wales’s main commercial centre. For a local brand taking orders through social media or messaging, a store needs a usable catalogue, online payment and order tracking. We plan how products sit in collections and which attributes become filters, then set up variants so that choices such as size or colour have their own stock, price, SKU and image.
Cardiff is also a centre for finance and business services. A local distributor selling to other businesses may need customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities, quote requests or ordering on account. We connect stores to accounting, ERP, email and marketplace tools, so orders, stock and shipping do not have to be handled by hand across separate systems.
Rules
What a UK ecommerce store needs to handle
Mandatory charges must not be added after a headline price is shown. We set up product and checkout displays so customers can see the applicable charges, and configure the relevant delivery and tax settings as part of the store build.
Marketing emails to individual customers require permission, and each email needs an opt-out. We set up the marketing permission and unsubscribe route as part of the email connection. If you run a UK limited company, we also include its registered number, registered office address, place of registration and limited-company status on the website.
How it runs
How an ecommerce project runs with us
We start by learning about your business, customers and goals, then agree the store scope with you. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m during British Summer Time. We agree the scope together so each stage has a clear basis for feedback across that time difference.
- 01
Design
We design product, collection and checkout pages for desktop and mobile. You review the screens and give feedback before code is written.
- 02
Catalogue
We import a small sample first. You check titles, variants, prices and images before the full catalogue goes in.
- 03
Testing
You place test orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases, checking stock, emails and the order records in the admin.
- 04
Launch and care
We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, then provide ongoing support. Your input during design and testing helps us resolve issues before launch.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring what you have, along with the decisions that need your input.
- A product spreadsheet with descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
- Original product photos with consistent backgrounds and image proportions, including an image for each colour.
- Shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies in plain language.
- Your decisions on delivery areas, couriers and charges, plus tax treatment checked with your accountant.
- Business-held logins for your domain, DNS, existing site, email, analytics and Google accounts.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The work depends on what is ready and what the store needs to do.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet is easier to import than information scattered across an old store, supplier PDFs and photo messages.
Catalogue setup
Importing products, organising variants and setting up stock management all form part of the build.
Connections
Accounting, ERP, email and marketplace integrations add setup work for the tools your store uses.
Special rules
Delivery date pickers, wholesale pricing or additional markets with their own currency, language and tax setup add work.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid
Adding an app for every small feature
Review what each app does and remove unused ones to reduce scripts, clutter, conflicts and recurring fees.
Overloading product pages
Compress images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where they are needed.
Testing only in a sandbox
Place a real low-value order using live payment settings and refund it to check the payment connection, currency and order emails.
Sending emails without authentication
Set up SPF or DKIM for the sending domain to help prevent order emails landing in spam.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Cardiff
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does an ecommerce website cost to develop?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers include catalogue size and complex variants, the depth of integrations, and how much existing data needs to move. For example, a two-way stock and price sync takes more work than an order export, while migrating customers and order history adds to the scope.
Should I sell through my own store or a marketplace?
Both can have a place in your sales setup. A marketplace brings ready traffic, but sets its own rules and keeps the customer relationship. Your own store keeps customer data and margin, while you take responsibility for attracting visitors. Some brands use both and sync their stock.
What payment, shipping and email work is included?
We configure shipping rules and check how payment events update the store. Shipping can use zones, flat or weight-based rates, thresholds and local pickup. Transactional emails cover events such as confirmation, dispatch and refunds; they need your branding, a sender on your domain and wording that matches your policies.
Can you move my existing store?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. The available data depends on the platforms involved, so we check what can move as part of defining the work and agree the migration scope with you.
Will I own the store after launch?
Yes. You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Keep the relevant accounts in your business’s name so that you retain access when responsibilities change.
What should we check after the store launches?
Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need. Track checkout drop-off, conversion, repeat purchases and product-page speed against the figures from before launch or migration.
