Choosing

Which ecommerce platform should you choose?

Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. You add features through apps, so check their recurring subscriptions when assessing the ongoing work of running the store. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan. It is the simplest option to run when its approach fits your products and operations.

WooCommerce suits a business already using WordPress, particularly one with substantial content or a team that wants control over code, data and hosting. That control comes with work: someone needs to look after hosting, security, updates and compatibility between plugins. A custom storefront is worth considering for an unusual catalogue or checkout that needs more flexibility.

Your day-to-day operations should guide the choice. Think through how products are organised, who will manage the store and which parts of checkout need to work in a particular way. We ask about your products and operations before recommending a platform, so the decision starts with the work your team needs to do.

Market

What do online buyers in the United Kingdom expect?

Customers need a way to pay and receive their orders that fits how you sell. We configure payment gateways, taxes, shipping rates and delivery partners. When choosing a gateway, compare the methods it supports, such as cards, wallets and bank transfers, along with settlement, refunds and disputes; your registration and sales currencies affect the choice.

The store also has to fit the way you take orders. A shop adding online sales may need stock synced with its till and a click-and-collect option. A brand taking orders through social media or messages may need a browsable catalogue, online payment and order tracking to replace handling each order in chat.

Rules

What does a UK ecommerce build need to handle?

Online customers must be told about their cancellation rights. We include that information in the store's policy pages. We also set up the displayed prices and checkout so mandatory charges are not introduced after the headline price, and the review process should exclude commissioned or submitted fake reviews.

For marketing emails to individual customers, we set up permission collection and an opt-out in each email. If your business is a limited company, we also include its registered number, registered office address, place of registration and limited-company status on the website.

How it runs

How an ecommerce development project runs with us

IST is 5h30m ahead of UK time, or 4h30m during British Summer Time. Across that difference, you talk directly to the people designing and building your store, so feedback and decisions can go to the people doing the work.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, customers and goals. You help us understand how you sell and what your team needs to manage; we then agree the store's scope together.

  2. 02

    Design

We design product, collection and checkout pages for desktop and mobile around how customers shop. You review the designs and give feedback before we write code.

  3. 03

    Build and test

We set up the catalogue and checkout. We test paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders, checking that the order record, stock and customer email update in each case.

  4. 04

    Review orders

Before launch, you place test orders across the payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases. You check the stock, emails and order details in the admin.

  5. 05

    Launch and care

We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, then provide ongoing support. Your team has the store admin for its day-to-day work.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Gather the material your team uses to sell and fulfil orders.

  • Product dataPrepare a spreadsheet with names, descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, stock and categories.
  • Sizes and weightsInclude package dimensions and weights so delivery charges are based on complete data.
  • PhotosKeep the high-resolution originals, with consistent backgrounds and an image for each colour variant.
  • Payment documentsGather registration, bank and identity details. Open the gateway account in your business's name and apply early.
  • Tax and delivery decisionsCheck product taxes with your accountant, and decide which couriers and areas you will serve.
  • Account accessFind the domain, DNS, store, email, analytics and Google logins; keep them in the business's name.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and time of ecommerce development?

The work changes with the design, existing data and systems your store needs to use.

  • Design

Adapting a theme involves less work than a custom design for unusual products or a distinct brand.

  • Product data

A clean spreadsheet is ready to import; information scattered across supplier PDFs, an old store and chat threads needs cleaning first.

  • Integrations

An order export to accounting is smaller work than syncing stock and prices with an ERP or marketplaces.

  • Migration

Moving customers, order history, reviews and gift cards adds scope beyond moving products. Existing customers usually need a password reset email.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with ecommerce development

  • Leaving old URLs behind

Map each old product and category URL to its closest new page, including discontinued products, with server-side permanent redirects.

  • Adding an app for every feature

Review what each app or plugin does and remove unused ones. Extra scripts, recurring fees and conflicts add up.

  • Overloading product pages

Compress large images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where needed.

  • Surprising shoppers at checkout

Show delivery and tax estimates on product or cart pages so customers see the likely charges earlier.

Questions

Asked by businesses in United Kingdom

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does an ecommerce website cost to develop?

There is no fixed price. The size and complexity of your catalogue, including variants, bundles and custom options, and the checkout your operations need are major drivers of the work. We send a free quote once we have agreed the scope with you, so it reflects the store you need built.

Should I sell through my own store or a marketplace?

You can use both, with stock synced between them. A marketplace brings ready traffic but controls its rules and customer relationship. Your own store keeps customer data and margin, while you need to attract visitors to it. If you sell across countries, also plan currencies, duties, translated content and shipping for each market.

What is included in the store build?

The build covers the pages customers use and the settings your team works with. We design product, collection and checkout pages, and configure catalogue import, variants and stock management. We also connect accounting, ERP, email or marketplace tools where agreed, so orders and stock do not need handling by hand across separate systems.

Will I own the website after launch?

Yes. You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Keep the relevant accounts in your business's name and make sure your team has the access it needs to manage the store and its content after launch.

What should we check after launch?

Retest the full checkout after every app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need. Compare conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed with your figures from before launch or migration.

Can you move my existing store?

Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Before the move, decide how your delivery rules should work: we can configure zones and conditions for rates based on weight or price, local pickup, and products that cannot be shipped to particular areas.
