What it does

A mailto link generator builds an email link that opens the visitor's mail app with the recipient, subject and message already filled in. The generator handles the fiddly part, which is encoding spaces, line breaks and special characters so every mail client reads the link the same way. You can add several recipients, cc and bcc addresses, and set the link text. The output is the raw link, the HTML anchor tag and a test link you can click.

How to use it

 1. Enter one or more recipient addresses, separated by commas.
 2. Add cc or bcc addresses if a colleague should be copied on every message.
 3. Write the subject and body. Line breaks in the body are preserved.
 4. Set the link text and copy either the mailto link or the HTML snippet.
 5. Click the test link under the output to check that it opens your mail app with every field filled in.

How to read the result

The status badge reads "Valid" when every address looks like an email address and the link is a sensible length. "Check: name@example" means one entry is missing its domain. "Long" appears past 1,800 characters, where some older clients cut the body short.

A link for hello@example.com with the subject "Quote request from your website" and a four-line body comes out at 153 characters. The encoded version looks like mailto:hello@example.com?subject=Quote%20request%20from%20your%20website&body=Hi%2C%0D%0A%0D%0AI%20would… The %0D%0A pairs are the line breaks, which is why the encoded body is noticeably longer than what you typed.

In the HTML snippet, ampersands between parameters are written as & so the page validates. Browsers decode them before opening the mail client.

Keep the body to a prompt such as "I would like a quote for:" rather than a full template. Visitors delete long pre-filled text and the link stays shorter.

For a phone equivalent, the click-to-call link generator builds tel: links the same way. Contact flows with proper forms and spam protection are part of every website we design and build.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Why does my subject line break the link?

Spaces, ampersands, question marks and non-English characters have to be percent-encoded inside a mailto link, otherwise the email client reads them as the end of the link or as a separate parameter. The generator encodes every field for you, so copy the output rather than typing the link by hand.

Is there a length limit?

There is no standard limit, but email clients and browsers each have their own. Links under about 2,000 characters work everywhere we have tested. The generator warns past 1,800. If you need a long pre-written message, link to a page with the text instead.

Will spam bots harvest the address?

Any address in a plain mailto link can be scraped. For a contact page with real traffic, a form with server-side spam filtering is safer. Mailto links remain the right choice for footers, one-off campaigns and intranet pages where convenience matters more.
