This Impressum generator builds the provider details page that German and Austrian law asks business websites to show. For Germany it follows § 5 Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz (DDG), which replaced the Telemediengesetz on 14 May 2024: name and address, legal form and representatives, email and phone, register entry, VAT ID, supervisory authority and professional details. It can add the person responsible for editorial content under § 18 Abs. 2 Medienstaatsvertrag and the consumer dispute resolution statement under § 36 VSBG. For Austria it follows § 5 E-Commerce-Gesetz and adds the disclosure under § 25 Mediengesetz. The output is in German.
How to use it
- Choose Germany or Austria, then your legal form.
- Enter the name or company name, address, representatives, email and phone.
- Add the register court and number and your VAT ID if you have them.
- Fill in the supervisory authority and chamber only if your activity needs a licence or is a regulated profession.
- Set the country options, check the status table, then copy the Markdown or HTML.
How to read the result
This is a starting template, not legal advice. Laws differ by country and change; have a lawyer review the text before you publish it.
The default example is a German GmbH in Berlin. All 5 required details are filled, so the status table shows 5/5 and there are no placeholders. The Impressum has sections for the § 5 DDG details, contact, register entry, tax details and consumer dispute resolution, with the statement that the company does not take part in proceedings before a consumer arbitration body. Businesses that had ten or fewer employees on 31 December of the previous year can leave that statement out.
Switch to Austria and the page changes: the heading cites § 5 ECG, the register becomes the Firmenbuch, the VAT ID becomes the UID-Nummer, and an "Offenlegung gemäß § 25 Mediengesetz" section names the media owner, business purpose and seat. That short disclosure is enough for a site that only presents the business. Tick "Site can shape public opinion" for a blog or magazine, and the full disclosure adds ownership and the basic editorial line, with 2 placeholders to fill.
Link the Impressum from every page, usually in the footer, under a clear label such as "Impressum".
We build German-language and multilingual business websites with the required pages in place as part of website design and development. For the privacy policy that sits next to it, the privacy policy generator covers GDPR basics in English.
Questions
Frequently asked.
Does my website need an Impressum?
In Germany, § 5 of the Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz requires one for business websites that are usually offered for payment, which is read widely in practice: most company sites, shops and freelancer sites need one. In Austria, § 5 ECG covers providers of online services and § 25 Mediengesetz adds a disclosure for almost every website. Purely private sites are the main exception.
Do I need a phone number in the Impressum?
The law asks for an email address plus a way to contact you quickly and directly. A phone number is the usual way to meet that, which is why the generator marks it as recommended. A contact form alone is risky unless you answer fast. If you leave the phone number out, ask a lawyer whether your alternative is enough.
Do I still need the EU online dispute resolution link?
No. The EU closed its online dispute resolution platform on 20 July 2025 under Regulation (EU) 2024/3228, so remove the link and the related text. In Germany, businesses with more than ten employees still have to say whether they take part in consumer dispute resolution under § 36 VSBG, which the generator covers.
