This privacy policy generator writes a plain-English privacy policy for a business website from a few answers: who you are, where you are based, what the site collects and which service providers handle the data. The policy follows a standard structure, from "Who we are" to "Contact us", and covers legal basis, international transfers, retention, your visitors' rights, cookies and children. It also lists the data protection laws that may apply to a business in your country. You get Markdown and HTML versions to copy or download, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
How to use it
- Enter your business name, website address, an email for privacy requests and a postal address.
- Choose the country where the business is based. This changes the rights section and the laws listed.
- Tick what the site collects, such as a contact form, newsletter sign-ups or payments.
- Tick the service providers you use, for example Vercel for hosting or Mailchimp for email.
- Replace every placeholder in square brackets, then paste the Markdown or HTML into your site.
How to read the result
This is a starting template, not legal advice. Laws differ by country and change; have a lawyer review the text before you publish it.
Take the default example: a business in India with a contact form, a newsletter and analytics, using Google Analytics, Vercel, Resend and Mailchimp. The policy comes out with 11 sections and 11 placeholders. Three of them are retention periods: [12 months] for enquiries, [14 months] for analytics data and [30 days] for server logs. Three more come from the India setting: the name, email and response time of the person who handles grievances.
Each placeholder must match what you actually do. If your analytics account deletes data after 2 months, write 2 months, not 14. A policy that promises something your settings do not do is worse than a short, accurate one.
The "Laws that may apply" panel is a pointer, not a verdict. A business in India that sells to customers in Germany may need to consider GDPR as well as the DPDP Act.
We set up forms, analytics and consent with privacy in mind as part of website design and development. For the banner that goes with this policy, use the cookie consent banner generator.
Questions
Frequently asked.
Is a generated privacy policy enough on its own?
No. This is a starting template, not legal advice. Laws differ by country and change; have a lawyer review the text before you publish it. The policy also has to describe what your business really does, so check every section against your forms, tools and settings, especially if you take payments or handle sensitive data.
Do I need a privacy policy if my site only has a contact form?
In most countries, yes. A contact form collects names and email addresses, which count as personal information, and laws such as GDPR, UK GDPR and India's DPDP Act expect you to explain what you do with them. Hosting logs and analytics collect data too, even from visitors who never fill in a form.
Which service providers should I list?
Every company that receives your visitors' personal information on your behalf: hosting, email delivery, analytics, payments, CRM and newsletter tools. Check your website code, your form settings and your invoices to find them. If a provider is missing from the checkboxes, add it to the "Who we share it with" list by hand in the same format.
