Choosing
Should you choose WordPress or a custom website?
WordPress suits a team that publishes often and wants to edit most of the site itself. Its choice of plugins gives you ways to add features, but someone needs to keep WordPress updated to maintain security. Before choosing it, decide who will look after those updates as well as the pages.
A custom-coded site in Next.js suits you if you want fast pages, tight security and a design without template limits. It also means a developer will usually handle structural changes. That distinction is useful when you are deciding which tasks your own team wants to take on after launch.
We recommend an option after understanding how your team works. Tell us who will publish content, how often the site will change and who will be responsible for maintenance. Those answers give us a practical basis for the platform decision before the page designs or build begin.
Local
What Maryland businesses need from their websites
Maryland's economy includes professional services, health care, retail and technology. A law, accounting or consulting firm needs service and partner pages where a prospective client can check expertise and credentials before calling. A clinic needs clear service pages, practitioner profiles and opening hours, with a booking or call option that works well on a phone.
Maryland manufacturers make products including electronics, computer equipment and chemicals. A supplier's site needs capability or product pages, certifications and downloadable specifications. Its quote form should collect enough detail for the right person to respond. Agree where those enquiries go, what the confirmation says and whether a mobile visitor should see a click-to-call button.
Rules
What a US website project has to handle
For businesses open to the public, ADA Title III covers goods and services offered on the web, and WCAG provides helpful guidance. We use that guidance when setting up a clear heading structure and page designs for desktop and mobile. State and local government websites have a specific requirement under ADA Title II: WCAG 2.1 Level AA. For those projects, we work to that standard when designing and building the site.
How it runs
How a website project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across the time difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. You help identify what the site needs to do and who it needs to serve.
- 02
Plan the pages
We use wireframes to settle the content and order of each page. Review the priorities here; colours come later.
- 03
Build and test
We build with clean code or a content management system your team can edit, then test on real devices and browsers.
- 04
Check before launch
You proofread every page, submit each form and confirm who receives its messages. This catches small errors visitors would otherwise encounter.
- 05
Launch and hand over
We set up your domain, email, analytics and Search Console, then walk your team through the site.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
We can build on your existing logo, colours and fonts and prepare brand assets for the web.
- Your main goal, such as quote requests or calls, and who handles each enquiry.
- Vector logo files, brand colours and fonts, or a note that these still need creating.
- Account details for your domain, hosting, email, analytics and Search Console, or the account holder's name.
- Real photos of your team, premises and finished work.
- Case studies, testimonials and client logos you have permission to show.
- Sites you like and dislike, with a short reason for each choice.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The platform and the work included in your scope both shape the build.
Features
Booking, calculators, member logins, multiple languages or a CRM connection add design, development and testing work.
Content readiness
Copy and photos ready to publish keep the scope smaller; adding copywriting, photography or translation makes it larger.
Content migration
Moving blog posts, news archives and downloadable files from an old site adds transfer and checking work.
Brand readiness
An existing logo and style guide reduce design effort compared with deciding the logo, colours and typefaces during the project.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid during a website build
Designing with placeholder text
Bring real headings and paragraphs into the layouts early, so their length does not disrupt an approved design.
Reviewing only on a large screen
Check every page on a phone before you approve it.
Leaving search setup until launch
Check page titles, the sitemap and any development indexing block before the site goes live.
Letting an agency hold your accounts
Register the domain and hosting in your business's name and grant access to the people doing the work.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Maryland
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to have a website built?
There is no fixed price. The page design work, readiness of your content and need for a separate content editor all affect the scope. A separate editor also adds hosting and maintenance work. We send you a free quote once we have agreed what the project includes.
Should I use a website builder?
A hosted builder such as Wix, Squarespace or Webflow can suit a small site you want to run yourself. Consider the trade-off before committing: you have less control over code and speed, and moving away from the builder later can mean rebuilding the site.
Can a custom website still have an editor?
Yes. A custom Next.js site can include an editor, so choosing custom development does not mean every content change has to go through a developer. WordPress suits teams that edit a lot of content themselves; we recommend an approach after learning how your team works.
What is included in the website build?
The build includes a content editor and search setup. Your team can use the editor for pages, news, projects and careers without training. Search work includes metadata, structured data and sitemaps, alongside fast-loading pages. These are part of the build, so you have them in place when the site launches.
Will I own the website?
Yes. You own the domain, the content and the code, with no lock-in. That gives your business control over the assets that make up the site. Keep the ownership details accessible to the person responsible for your website, alongside the accounts your business uses to manage it.
What happens after launch?
We provide ongoing support after launch. You should also decide who will update news, projects and job posts. In analytics, track form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions, then check which pages those enquiries started from. That gives you a way to review the site against actual enquiries.
