Choosing

Which platform should you choose?

Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. You can add features through apps, though those can bring recurring subscriptions. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan, so check your checkout requirements before choosing it.

WooCommerce is a fit if your team already uses WordPress or your store has a lot of content. It gives you control over code, data and hosting, with work attached: someone needs to look after hosting, updates, security and plugin compatibility.

A headless storefront, such as Next.js connected to a commerce back end, suits unusual catalogues, product configurators and content-led brands. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. We recommend a platform after learning how your products and operations work, including any requirements that would be awkward to handle through a standard checkout.

Local

What Maryland businesses need from an online store

Maryland’s economy includes retail services. If you run a physical shop and are adding online sales, your store needs stock connected to your till system so your team can manage availability across both. Click and collect also needs a clear place in the ordering process.

Maryland manufacturing includes electronics and computer equipment. If you sell products with different specifications or options, the catalogue needs useful categories and filters, with each variant carrying its own price, SKU, stock and image. A manufacturer selling to trade customers may also need customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities, quote requests or ordering on account.

Rules

What a United States store has to handle

Statewide sales tax applies in many US states. Your checkout needs tax settings that reflect the products you sell and the decisions your business has made about applicable taxes; we configure those settings as part of the store build.

Stripe lists the United States as a country where businesses can sign up to accept payments. We set up the chosen gateway for your platform; the choice also needs to account for your business registration, selling currencies, supported payment methods, settlement, refunds and disputes.

How it runs

How an e-commerce project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter, and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The board gives both sides a place to share feedback and keep work moving across that difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, customers and goals. You tell us how the store needs to operate, and we agree the scope together before work moves into design.

  2. 02

    Design

We design product, collection and checkout pages for desktop and mobile. You review the screens and give feedback while changes can still be made before code is written.

  3. 03

    Build and launch

We build and test the store on real devices and browsers. At launch, we handle domain, email, analytics and search setup, followed by ongoing support.

  4. 04

    Test orders

You place orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases. Check the stock, order emails and admin records before the store opens to customers.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring the material and decisions that describe how your store should work.

  • A product spreadsheet with prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
  • Original product photos, including an image for each colour variant.
  • Plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies.
  • Tax decisions checked with your accountant, plus your delivery areas, couriers and charges.
  • Domain, DNS, store, email, analytics and Google logins held in your business’s name.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline?

The scope determines how much design, build and checking work the store needs.

  • Catalogue setup

Importing products, organising variants and managing stock all form part of the build.

  • Design approach

Adapting an existing theme is smaller work than creating a custom design for unusual products or a distinct brand.

  • Connections

Accounting, ERP, email and marketplace connections each add to the scope that needs to be set up.

  • Checkout and pricing rules

Gift messages, delivery date pickers, wholesale tiers and customer-specific catalogues add requirements to build and check.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with an online store

  • Testing only in sandbox mode

Place a real low-value order using live payment settings, then refund it. Check the currency, order email and payment connection.

  • Adding an app for every small feature

Review what each app or plugin does and remove those you no longer use. Extra scripts, conflicts and recurring fees can accumulate.

  • Leaving charges until the last checkout step

Show delivery and tax estimates on product or cart pages so shoppers can see the likely costs earlier.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Maryland

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an e-commerce website?

There is no fixed price. The main drivers include the number of products and variants, the depth of connections such as two-way ERP stock and price sync, and how much existing store data must move. Migration can include products, customers, order history, reviews, gift cards and URL redirects. We agree the scope with you before the build.

Can you move our existing store to a new platform?

Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Map each old product and category URL to the closest new page, including a suitable destination for a dropped product. Server-side permanent redirects help shoppers and search engines reach the new pages.

Can the store sell in more than one country?

Yes. The store needs decisions for each market, including prices, currencies, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive display, duties, translated content and shipping options. Some platforms handle these in their core product; others need extensions. Set out the markets and their requirements before choosing how the store will handle them.

What does the build include beyond the storefront?

It includes payment and shipping configuration, product and stock management, and connections to services such as accounting, ERP, email or marketplaces. We also build fast product pages with structured data for rich search results. Payment testing covers paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders, including the resulting stock and customer email.

Will we own the store, and what happens after launch?

You own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in to the team that built the store. We offer ongoing support after launch. Track measures such as checkout drop-off and product-page speed against your earlier figures, and retest checkout after app, plugin or theme changes.

How do you set up order emails?

We plan emails for order confirmation, dispatch with tracking, refunds, abandoned carts and password resets. They need your branding, a sender on your store’s domain and wording that matches your policies. Set up SPF or DKIM authentication for the sending domain; Gmail requires every sender to have at least one.
