Choosing

Should you build a web app or a mobile app first?

Start with a web app if people will use your product mainly at a desk or share it through a link. A mobile app first is a better fit when the camera, location or daily notifications are central to the product. That choice changes which interactions you need to design and test first.

For a web app with a rich interface, React and Next.js with TypeScript are an option when you want one language across the front and back end. If your existing team works in PHP, Ruby or Python, Laravel, Rails or Django may fit their skills more closely and make future maintenance easier for them.

Hosting is a separate decision. Managed platforms such as Vercel, Supabase and Firebase reduce setup and server upkeep. Direct hosting on AWS or Google Cloud gives you more control and can cost less at scale, with more operations work to manage. We help you choose by turning your idea into a feature list and agreeing what the first version needs.

Local

What Sydney organisations need from a web app

Sydney has strengths in finance and tourism. A firm with a repeatable service can turn its know-how into workflows that clients access through their own logins and subscriptions. An established business launching a digital product also needs a way to build it without drawing its staff away from their daily work.

Sydney is also home to major universities, including the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. For an education organisation introducing a web app, onboarding screens need to help a new user reach a useful task. Sample data and clear empty states give people something to work with before their account contains any information.

Rules

What an Australian web app needs to handle

Australian guidance recommends WCAG 2.2 at Level AA for equal access to digital goods and services. We design onboarding, dashboard and settings screens against that guidance, so accessibility is considered as the interface takes shape.

Card surcharging has been removed for debit, prepaid and credit payments on the eftpos, Mastercard and Visa networks. If your app takes those payments, we configure checkout so it does not add a surcharge to them.

How it runs

How a web app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards, and you speak directly to the people designing and building your product. India is 4h30m behind Sydney, or 5h30m behind during Sydney daylight saving time. The shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across the difference.

  1. 01

    Design

We produce the onboarding, dashboard and settings flows and screens. You review how users move through the product and tell us where a task or screen needs to change.

  2. 02

    Build

We put each increment on a staging site. You try real tasks there and approve changes before they reach the people using the product.

  3. 03

    Private beta

A small group of target users tries the product before public launch. You use their feedback to identify confusing steps and missing features while changes are still cheap.

  4. 04

    Launch and care

We set up deployment, error tracking and backups before launch, then configure the domain, email and analytics. You have ongoing support after the product goes live.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring a view of the tools users currently piece together and what is missing from each.

  • Users and tasksWho will use the product, what job do they need done, and how do they do it today?
  • Pricing approachConsider whether customers will pay per seat, per usage or on a flat plan.
  • Data constraintsIdentify personal or sensitive data and any security reviews your customers will ask for.
  • Subscription detailsThink about trials, upgrades, invoices and what should happen after a failed card payment.
  • Customer data separationNote whether buyers need a separate database for isolation or data-location requirements.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline of a web app

Integrations and a public API add development work, documentation and support; other scope decisions also affect the work involved.

  • Roles and permissions

More rules add work, particularly when customers invite users and manage their own teams.

  • Billing rules

Usage charges, per-seat pricing, currencies, tax and invoicing each add cases to build and check.

  • Real-time features

Collaborative editing, live dashboards and chat need additional infrastructure and testing.

  • Large data sets

Imports, exports and reports may need background jobs and performance work to handle the data.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid when building a web app

  • Building every account and billing component from scratch

Check proven services first so the budget stays available for the product features users notice.

  • Treating every payment webhook as a new event

Skip events already processed and avoid depending on their order, so an upgrade is not applied twice.

  • Releasing without staging or tested backups

Keep a test environment and check your backups so a mistake does not immediately become a live incident.

  • Launching without product analytics

Track sign-ups, activation steps and feature use from the first release so you can see where users get stuck.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Sydney

Page updated 5 November 2026

Can you build the first version of my SaaS product?

Yes. We help you decide what the first version must include, build it and plan what comes next. For a founder launching a SaaS product, that can mean focusing on accounts and billing while keeping the codebase ready to grow.

Should I use a service for sign-in and billing?

A proven service is often a useful choice because it removes a large amount of edge-case work. Stripe Billing or an authentication provider can handle established parts of the product. A custom build fits better when your pricing model is unusual or your data rules are strict.

What development work is included?

We build the front end, back end, database and APIs in TypeScript. Account work also needs attention to password resets and email verification, including the associated emails and edge cases. Admin tools give your team a way to inspect accounts and answer support questions.

Can you take over an existing web app?

Yes. We start by reviewing the code and infrastructure, then fix what matters most. If your first version has slow pages or code that is difficult to work on, the review gives you a basis for a plan before adding more features.

Who owns the code and product data?

You do. Ownership includes the code, repositories, hosting accounts and data. That gives you control of the core assets used to run and maintain the product, so you can decide how the work continues as your needs change.

What should we track and maintain after launch?

Track activation, retention and churn alongside revenue to see whether users reach value and keep coming back. Frameworks, libraries and hosting also need regular updates for security fixes, even when you are not planning new features. Both product use and maintenance need attention after launch.
