Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build one from scratch?
An existing theme is a practical choice when its layouts suit your products and you want lighter setup work. Later theme updates are simpler too. A custom theme gives you more room for unusual products and a distinct brand, though future layout changes need development work. Start by listing the pages and product details your staff need to manage, then check how well the theme supports them.
Apps add features quickly, but each one brings a recurring fee, dependence on its maker and potentially extra scripts. Custom code or a custom app can fit a particular requirement more closely, with maintenance needed as Shopify changes. For checkout, Shopify runs the process itself: standard customisation is available from the Basic plan, while apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus.
We start with your business, customers and goals, then agree the store scope with you. That gives us a basis for choosing the theme and deciding where an app or custom work fits.
Local
What San Diego businesses need from a Shopify store
Tourism is a major local industry. A tourism business with a physical shop and an online catalogue can use Shopify’s point-of-sale app alongside its store to bring online and in-store stock into one system. That gives staff a shared way to manage products across both.
International trade is part of the city’s economy. A local brand selling into several countries needs prices in local currencies, translated content and shipping for each market. Shopify markets can put those settings under one admin, so the team has a single place to manage them.
The city is also home to universities, including UC San Diego. An organisation selling merchandise with sizes or care requirements can use metafields to display size charts and care instructions in their own product-page sections, where buyers can find them without searching through a long description.
Rules
What a United States store needs to handle
State sales tax settings need attention when you sell across the United States: some states have no statewide sales tax, while others levy one. We configure taxes alongside your products, shipping and payment settings for the markets you sell into. Your scope should identify those markets so the store setup reflects where you intend to take orders, instead of leaving tax settings as an afterthought at launch.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 13h30m ahead of Pacific time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. Use the board to leave feedback and decisions for us across the time difference.
- 01
Discover and design
We learn about your audience and goals, agree the scope with you and prepare desktop and mobile designs. You review the screens before coding starts.
- 02
Build and review
Theme work takes place on an unpublished copy. You preview and approve it before publication, while the live store keeps trading.
- 03
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the store password, switch payments to live and import redirects. A real test order is placed and then refunded.
- 04
Handover
Your team learns to run orders, products and discounts independently. Bring the people who will handle those tasks into the handover.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather these items so we can understand the store and its content.
- Your Shopify account and plan, in your business’s name and billing.
- A product sheet with titles, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock by location. Include descriptions too.
- Product photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, specifications and care instructions.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, and your shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies. Review any generated templates.
- A list of current and planned tools, such as accounting, subscriptions and couriers, with the job each must do.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of Shopify development
The scope determines how much design, development and testing the store needs.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme is smaller work than designing and building a custom theme for your brand.
Migration depth
Moving products alone is lighter than also moving customer records, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects.
Integrations and markets
Connections to accounting, warehouse or marketplace systems add work, especially with two-way stock and price sync. Market-specific prices, translations and shipping add scope too.
Business logic
Custom rules need development and testing. Public apps with Shopify Functions work on any plan; custom apps containing Function APIs need Shopify Plus.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Loose product data
Agree consistent tags, product types and vendors before using automated collections and filters. Otherwise products can appear in the wrong place or be hidden.
Too many apps
Review the need for each subscription and its scripts. When removing an app, check the theme files for code it has left behind.
Missing redirects
Map old URLs to their new destinations and import the map at launch. Redirects work only from URLs that no longer load a page.
Unfinished content
Replace theme demo content, placeholder policies and default notification wording before buyers see the store.
Questions

Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price for the work described here. A custom theme, the depth of a migration and the integrations you need all affect the scope. Tell us what the store must do, including any existing platform and tools, so those requirements can be discussed before a quote.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. We handle design, development and launch with the same team. That includes setting up the store and helping your staff learn to manage it. For a first online store, Shopify also removes the need for your team to manage hosting, security and software updates.
Should I use one store for sales in several countries?
One store can serve several countries through Shopify markets, with local-currency pricing, translations and international domains. Separate stores suit a business that needs a different catalogue or team for each country, or payouts in different currencies. Your catalogue and operating structure are useful starting points for the choice.
Can a product page handle personalised choices?
Yes. Shopify supports up to three options per product, such as size, colour and material. A fourth choice, such as engraving text or a custom length, needs line item properties in the theme or an app. List the choices buyers must provide so the product setup captures them.
Who owns the store and controls developer access?
The store stays in your account, and you own your domain, content and code. A developer works through a collaborator account that you approve. You choose its permissions and can remove access, so your store is not locked to the team that built it.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support follows launch from the people who designed and built the store. You can also review Shopify reports for conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers. Search Console shows organic clicks and product-page indexing, giving you specific things to check as you run the store.
