Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build a custom one?
Customising an existing theme keeps the initial setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. It suits a store whose product pages and buying flow fit comfortably within the theme’s layouts. A custom theme gives you more room for unusual products and a distinct brand, though later layout changes need development work. Think about who will make those changes after launch as well as what you need the store to do now.
A headless storefront built with Hydrogen or Next.js is another option for a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow. It comes with a trade-off: you give up the Shopify theme editor, and apps that add features through a theme might not work. If your team expects to edit layouts through the theme editor, include that requirement when discussing the storefront.
Payment choice also affects the setup. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even when Shopify Payments is active. If Shopify Payments is unavailable to your business, compare the total cost per order across gateways before choosing one.
Market
What buyers expect from an online store
A shopper needs a clear route from a product page to payment. Stripe lists the United States among the countries where businesses can sign up to accept payments, so it is a gateway worth considering when you decide how to take orders. We can discuss that choice alongside the rest of your payment setup.
If you also run physical shops, your staff need a workable view of online and in-store stock. Shopify’s point-of-sale app can sit alongside the online store in one system. Bring your stock and store requirements to the discussion so the online setup reflects how your staff handle products.
Rules
What a Shopify project in the United States has to handle
State sales tax affects checkout setup: forty-five states and the District of Columbia levy a statewide sales tax, while Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. We configure tax settings for your market using the requirements you provide, alongside shipping and payment settings.
Commercial email needs a valid physical postal address and a clear opt-out, and opt-out requests must be honoured. If you need email flows connected to store data, we include those message requirements in the setup so your commercial emails have the required address and opt-out route.
How it runs
How a Shopify development project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. In winter, India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time and 13h30m ahead of Pacific time; the gap changes during daylight saving. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across the time difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals. You tell us what the store needs to do, and we agree the scope together.
- 02
Design
We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback before we write theme code.
- 03
Build and preview
We work on an unpublished copy of the theme. You preview and approve it before publication, while the live store continues trading.
- 04
Handover
Your staff learn how to manage orders, products and discounts, so the people running the store can handle those tasks themselves.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
For a migration, gather exports from your current store and a list of the URLs that bring the most traffic and sales.
- A Shopify account and plan in your business’s name and billing.
- A product sheet with titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock by location. Weights support calculated shipping rates.
- Consistent photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- A note of product details, such as dimensions, that should appear in their own page sections.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, plus reviewed shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of Shopify development
The work involved depends on the catalogue, storefront and systems you need to connect.
Catalogue structure
Bundles and made-to-order choices add setup and theme work.
Product choices
Shopify allows up to three options per product. A fourth choice needs line item properties in the theme or an app.
Theme design
A custom theme is designed around your brand and built for speed on mobile.
Integrations
Reviews, subscriptions, ERP, accounting and WhatsApp connections need to be set up and tested.
Markets
Local-currency pricing, translations and international domains need planning; separate stores suit different catalogues, teams or payout currencies.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Launching a migration without redirects
Product and collection URLs change to Shopify’s fixed paths. Prepare a full old-to-new URL map for launch, noting that redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Using inconsistent tags, product types and vendors
Automated collections and filters read these fields. Standardise the product data so items appear in the intended places.
Leaving demo content in place
Review theme examples, placeholder policies and default notification wording before launch, and replace them with your own content.
Questions
Asked by businesses in United States
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price for this work. The main drivers include how much data you are migrating, connections such as two-way stock and price sync, and any custom business logic. Moving only products is lighter than also moving customers, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. We handle design, development and launch with the same team, and you speak directly to the people doing the work. That can suit a first-time online seller who wants staff to run the store without managing hosting, security or software updates.
What is included in a Shopify build?
The work includes a search-ready store with clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages from launch. It also includes training so your team can run orders, products and discounts independently. Agree the store’s scope with us before work starts, including the features your staff need to manage.
Who owns the store and controls developer access?
You own your domain, content and code. The store stays in your account, and a developer works through a collaborator account that you approve. You choose its permissions and can remove access at any time, so you remain in control of who can work on the store.
Can a developer customise Shopify checkout?
Yes, within Shopify’s checkout options. Shopify runs the checkout itself, and standard customisation is available from the Basic plan up. Apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus, so discuss those requirements before choosing a plan or specifying an app.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support follows launch from the people who designed and built your store. You can also review installed apps, staff accounts and collaborator access periodically, removing what is no longer used. Shopify reports cover conversion and returning customers; Search Console shows organic clicks and product-page indexing.
