Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build your own?
An existing theme is a practical starting point when its layouts suit your products. Customising it keeps the initial setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you a design shaped around your brand and unusual products, but subsequent layout changes need development work. Weigh up how much control you need over the design and who will make changes after launch.
A headless storefront using Hydrogen or Next.js suits content-led brands or buying flows that a conventional theme cannot accommodate. That choice comes with a trade-off: you give up the theme editor, and apps that add features through a theme may not work. Your team’s preferred way of editing the storefront should be part of that decision.
Checkout has its own limits. Shopify runs it, with standard customisation available from the Basic plan up. Apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus. We help you choose a route by discussing those limits alongside the theme and editing trade-offs.
Local
What Edinburgh businesses need from a store
Edinburgh has manufacturing and scientific and technical services among its major sectors. If you sell products from a local business, your catalogue needs a structure your staff can keep accurate as it grows. We can help set up manual collections where staff select products, or automated collections based on consistent tags, product types, vendors or prices.
The city also attracts visitors from overseas. If you run an Edinburgh shop serving visitors as well as local customers, Shopify’s point-of-sale app can bring online and in-store stock into one system. For a brand selling into several countries, the store can also manage local-currency prices, translated content and market-specific shipping from one admin.
Rules
What a UK Shopify store needs to show
For online orders, UK customers must be told they can cancel up to 14 days after delivery without giving a reason. We set up a returns policy page where you can present that information alongside your business’s returns process.
If your business is a UK limited company, its website must show its registered number, registered office address, place of registration and limited-company status. We set up a place on the site for those details; you supply the information for your company.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m ahead during British Summer Time. We use the shared board to keep decisions and work visible across that difference.

Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather what you already have; these details help us define the store and its scope.
- A Shopify account and plan in your business’s name and billing.
- A product sheet with titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock by location.
- Consistent product photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, and your shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies. Review generated templates before using them.
- For a migration, exports of products, customers and orders, plus the URLs bringing the most traffic and sales.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time of Shopify development
The scope determines how much configuration, development and testing the store needs.
Migration
Moving products, customers and orders, with redirects, involves more work than setting up a store without that move.
Custom logic
Special discount or checkout rules add development and testing; custom apps using Shopify Function APIs need Shopify Plus.
Integrations
Reviews, subscriptions, ERP, accounting and WhatsApp connections need to be connected and tested.
Apps or custom code
Apps bring recurring fees and dependence on their makers. Custom code needs maintenance as Shopify changes.
Product details
Metafields for dimensions, care instructions or size charts need a place in the theme to display them.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with your Shopify store
Editing the live theme
A mistake appears to visitors immediately. Duplicate the theme, make changes on the copy, preview them and then publish.
Skipping redirects
Shopify uses fixed product and collection paths. Map old URLs to new ones and import the map at launch; redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Loose product data
Inconsistent tags, product types and vendors can put products in the wrong collections or hide them from filters. Keep those fields consistent.
Leaving demo content in place
Check for placeholder policies and default notification wording before launch.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Edinburgh
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers are your choice of an adjusted or custom theme, the amount of data being migrated, and integrations such as stock and price synchronisation. Extra markets with their own prices, translations and shipping also add work. We send a free quote once we have agreed the scope with you.
Can I hire you to build a Shopify store?
Yes. We build stores for first-time online sellers who want their own staff to run day-to-day operations without managing hosting, security or software updates. Your team receives training on orders, products and discounts, so those routine tasks do not depend on a developer after handover.
How should I choose a payment gateway?
Compare the total cost per order across the gateways available to your business. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even if Shopify Payments is also active. That comparison is especially useful if Shopify Payments is not available to your business.
What can be included in the store build?
The build can include clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages from launch, as well as connected apps for reviews and subscriptions. For specific business rules, Shopify Functions can change discount logic, hide or rename delivery and payment options, or block checkout when an order breaks a rule.
Will I own the store after you build it?
You own your domain, content and code. That means you are not locked to the team that built the store and can decide who works on it later. Keep those assets under your business’s control as you plan the handover and any future changes.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support follows launch from the same people who designed and built your store. You can also review installed apps, staff accounts and collaborator access periodically, removing what is no longer used. Shopify reports and Search Console give you places to check store activity and product-page indexing.
