What you get
What’s included in mobile app development
App design
Screens and flows designed for iOS and Android conventions.
Cross-platform build
One React Native codebase for both platforms, with native modules where needed.
Backend & APIs
Accounts, data, notifications and admin tools behind the app.
Push notifications
Timely, targeted notifications that bring people back.
Payments & subscriptions
In-app purchases and subscriptions on both stores.
Store launch
App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.
Tools we use: React Native, Expo, Swift, Kotlin, Firebase, Node.js.
Choosing
Should you choose React Native, native or a web app?
We usually build in React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android and adding native modules where a feature needs them. It uses JavaScript or TypeScript and renders each platform’s own interface components. If you already have a React website, some logic can be shared with it, and web developers can contribute to the app.
Native development suits an app built around deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch. Swift is used for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. The trade-off is maintaining a separate codebase for each platform, so the feature requirements need to justify that extra work.
A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool. It skips store review, but it will not appear in app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. We help you weigh those limits against the features your users need.
Local
What Edinburgh organisations need from an app
Health and social care and construction are major sectors in Edinburgh. An appointment-based service needs booking, reminders, payments and a staff view of the day’s schedule. A construction business with people working on site may need job forms with photos, signatures and location, ready to sync to the office when a signal returns.
The public sector also plays a central role in the city’s economy. For an organisation managing a service through an app, the phone screen is only part of the work: staff may also need a backend and an admin panel where they can edit content, look up users and manage accounts without calling a developer.
How it runs
How a mobile app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India time is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m during British Summer Time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback for the team across that time difference.

Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals. You help us agree the scope before work starts.
- 02
Design
We prepare the iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. You can check the proposed flows at this stage.
- 03
Build
We use a React Native codebase across both platforms, adding native modules where needed. You can review how the agreed screens and features work together.
- 04
Test
You get builds on your own phone through TestFlight for iPhone or Google Play’s internal or closed testing tracks. Your feedback comes from using the app.
- 05
Launch
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain access to those accounts.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather these details early so we can plan the build and submission around your existing systems.
- Developer accountsRegister the Apple and Google accounts in your company’s name. Organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
- TestersA new personal Google Play account needs a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for at least 14 days before production release.
- System accessList your website, CRM, booking system and payment provider; note their APIs and who holds admin access.
- Privacy policyPrepare a policy matching the data the app collects, for its Apple listing and a link inside the app.
- Demo loginFor an app with a login, have a working demo account and live backend ready for Apple’s review.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of an app?
The scope determines how much there is to design, build and test.
Existing backend
A documented API can save work; a new backend and admin panel may be as large a job as the app.
User types
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that request data.
Integrations
Each payment gateway, booking system or device adds setup, testing and handling for failures.
User content
Posts or other contributions need moderation features, including reporting and blocking abusive users.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building an app
Wrapping a website in an app shell
Plan useful app features beyond the existing site. A repackaged website risks rejection by Apple.
Putting sign-up before the value
Let people use the app without logging in where significant account-based features are absent.
Requesting notifications immediately
Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user permits them.
Questions

Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price: the work changes with the features you choose. For example, showing previously loaded data offline is a smaller task than allowing offline edits and resolving conflicts when they sync. Checkout also needs planning: digital purchases and physical services have different store payment requirements.
How should I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that can explain its technical approach and how you will retain control of the product. Ask who will hold the developer accounts, signing access and code repository. Keeping these in your business’s name makes it easier to move the app later if your needs change.
What is included beyond the app screens?
We can set up push notifications and the tools to see how the app is being used. Notifications need a sending service, rules for recipients and timing, and settings for switching categories off. Analytics and crash reporting in the first release show screen use, drop-off points and device crashes.
Will I own the app code?
Yes. You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. That gives you control over those assets after the project, including if you decide to work with a different developer. Discuss where the code will be kept and how your team will access it during the project.
What support does an app need after launch?
Plan for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features after release. Google Play also requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Some JavaScript and content fixes can be delivered over the air, while native code changes and new permissions need a store release.
Can the app share data with my website?
Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools. If people can create accounts, include account deletion in the build: Apple requires an in-app deletion request, while Google Play also requires a web link where people can request deletion of the account and associated data.
